Colonialism, nationalism and modernity in al-Manfalūṭī’s novelization of a Coppée’s play: a comparative reading ofFī sabīl al-tājandPour La Couronne
This article discusses the ways in which Mu?tafa Lutfi al-Manfaluti rewrote Francois Coppee's Pour la Couronne (1895) in the shape of the novel, Fi sabil al-taj (1920). Al-Manfaluti turns a French drama into an Egyptian epic rather than simply introducing a piece of foreign literature by means of translation, so as to spread his call against imperialism and anti-colonialism and his program for fashioning an Egyptian national in the frame of 1919 Revolution. Whereas the author preserves all of the main events and traits of the original story, through commentary and word selection in his translation he orientates a new interpretation of the text. The article suggests that translation in the Nah?a cannot be seen only as acculturation but, in line with Venuti and Reynolds, should be considered as a new text that expresses the agency of the translators and their cultural environment
The Narration of the maqāmāt: A Reading of ʾAbū Bakr b. Muḥsin Bā ʿAbbūd’s al-Maqāmāt al-hindiyya (1715) through Propp
This article conducts a reading of ʾAbū Bakr b. Muḥsin Bā ʿAbbūd al-ʿAlawī’s al-Maqāmāt al-hindiyya (1715), employing Vladimir Propp’s model of narrative functions. Although Proppian functions have frequently been harnessed to deconstruct essential components and plot architecture within the maqāma genre, the article emphasises the intrinsic limitations of this approach, especially when the focus is restricted to the analysis of isolated units rather than the entire collection. In accordance with various literary analyses, this research interprets the maqāma as a genre that orchestrates individual narrative units to synthesise a more expansive, novel-like overarching narrative. Within this intricate framework, the text accentuates the interconnected events between the narrator and the trickster. The emphasis lies on the multifaceted transformation experienced by both characters: the first encountering and engaging with the world’s complexity, and the second undergoing a progressive moral conversion, culminating
in his eventual demise. In the process, the article posits that the inherent quality of the maqāma of Bā ʿAbbūd, inspired by the models of al-Ḥarīrī, shows the flexibility of the genre. Within the predictability of its narratives, the maqāma is a genre able to become a vessel for diverse thematic discourses that the author seeks to convey
ATLAS TDAQ System Integration and Commissioning
The ATLAS detector will be exposed to proton proton collisions at a center of mass energy of 14 TeV with the bunch crossing rate of 40 MHz. A three-level trigger system has been designed to reduce this rate down to the level at which only interesting events are fully reconstructed. The level 1 trigger reduces the rate down to 75 kHz via custom-built electronics. The Region of Interest Builder delivers the Region of Interest records to the second level trigger which runs the selection algorithms with the commodity processors and brings the rate further down to ~ 3.5 kHz. Finally the Event Filter reduces the rate down to ~ 200 Hz for permanent storage. We review the trigger and data acquisition architecture and its in situ commissioning using almost full detectors. Results on system functionality and performance based on the cosmic data, early experience on LHC beam in 2008 and preselected simulated events are presented
Study of energy response and resolution of the ATLAS barrel calorimeter to hadrons of energies from 20 to 350 GeV
A fully instrumented slice of the ATLAS detector was exposed to test beams from the SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) at CERN in 2004. In this paper, the results of the measurements of the response of the barrel calorimeter to hadrons with energies in the range 20–350 GeV and beam impact points and angles corresponding to pseudo-rapidity values in the range 0.2–0.65 are reported. The results are compared to the predictions of a simulation program using the Geant4 toolkit
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
