Bourdieu y Luhmann: Diferencias, similitudes, sinergias

    No full text
A compilation of articles edited by Nassehi and Nollmann (2004) and a paper published by Pokol (2002) inaugurate a discussion about similarities in the theories of Pierre Bourdieu and Niklas Luhmann in spite of the fact that the differences are more likely visible. This paper unifies the discussion which until now has been developed from various authors independently and introduces the arguments in the Spanish speaking academic sphere. readopting and accentuating the comparative idea, this text defends that using simultaneously, previously justified, the theories of Bourdieu and Luhmann is an interesting possibility of epistemological synthesis. developing a systematic comparison of similarities and differences in core concepts from each author, their relation with classical and contemporary sociological theory, their epistemological axioms, views on agency/structure and subjacent ethics, the paper finally summarizes the synergetic effects which a perspective based on both theoretical sources offers for social investigation.

The author presents the central arguments developed by both Höffe and Luhmann regarding the foundations of an institutional normative order to ensure political and non-metaphysical justice. Thus, presents the contributions of both philosophers; in the first section, he explains the Luhmanian ethics, and afterwards describes the criticism of Höffe to Luhmannian positivism. Finally, the author highlights the contributions of Luhmann and Höffe and statuses them as the most important ideas in recent decades in philosophy of German lawEl autor expone los argumentos centrales desarrollados tanto por Höffe como por Luhmann respecto de los fundamentos de un orden normativo institucional que garanticen una justicia política y no-metafísica.

This thesis is conceived with the idea of continuity and refinement in the ideas of Niklas Luhmann. lnstead of explaining the transition from one phase, preceding the "autopoietic turn", to another following this turn, as a leap produced by the development of concepts as autopoiesis, it aims to demonstrate that the first Luhmann has notions similar to the concepts achieved by the second Luhmann, despite his shift in his starting point. In this sense, it aims to create bridges between the first and the second phase of the author to ease the comprehension of the later phase, taking into account that the first Luhmann, by using concepts more akin to traditional sociology, is easier to read than the second Luhmann.PregradoAbogado(a

Theorizing culture, or reading Luhmann against Luhmann

This article tries to counter Niklas Luhmann's outspoken theoretical scepticism about the notion of culture. In the first part, it is argued that Luhmann devised at least three culture-related concepts: memory, semantics or semantic structures, and knowledge. After a short presentation of Luhmann's explicit considerations on the notion of culture, these conceptual equivalents are briefly clarified and discussed. In the second section, the interrelationships between Luhmann's culture-related notions are analyzed. More particularly, it is shown that they all point to the double process of condensation and confirmation of meaning or Sinn (in the phenomenological sense). Within communicative or social systems, this process explains the unintended production of what Luhmann terms meaning kernels, symbolic generalizations, schemes or identities. As Luhmann himself admits, communication cannot do without symbolic generalizations or meaning-identities. This necessitates a re-evaluation of the notion of culture from a systems theoretical point of view. The closing section offers a first step in this direction. It is argued that condensed and therefore typified forms or meaning-identities can be regarded as the elements of culture considered as a medium. According to this view, culture is a more specific articulation of the overall medium of meaning or Sinn and has a temporal, factual and social dimension. The primary function of the medium of culture is to ensure the structural coupling between social and psychic systems. Social systems therefore presuppose that condensed forms, or cultural elements, are always already known by all participating psychic systems. In order to underline this assumptive nature, the author proposes the notion of operative fiction.status: Publishe

    Art as a Social System

    No full text
Through an interdisciplinary approach, Luhmann clarifies the context and contingency of art while elaborating his theory of society. Returning to 18th century aesthetics, the author argues that art is communication that uses perception instead of language. Maintaining that perception and communication are incommensurable, he nonetheless claims that art operates in the boundary between the social system and consciousness, profoundly irritating communication while remaining internal to the social. The article presents a synopsis of the fruitful relationship between Niklas Luhmann and Humberto Maturana. The Luhmannian theory is a conceptual structure whose dimensions include the understanding of the social as a whole. Notwithstanding the passing of the author in 1998, his posthumous writings are still being published and the influence of his thinking is gradually extended to several domains within social sciences. A core part of that complex thinking was developed with the benefit of concepts that Luhmann adapted from Humberto Maturana's biology. This study explains the workings of such tie and its reach for understanding modern globalized society
