Tips and tricks for building a good paper: what editors want
ESSKA is constantly committed to promoting the improvement of scientific quality through the publication of books and the organization of dedicated conferences. In line with this commitment, this interview paper was crated with the aim of being useful for all the young scientists and orthopaedics keen in musculoskeletal and sport medicine research. Three Editors from the most important journals in our field were invited to participate: Jon Karlsson from Knee Surgery Sport Traumatology and Arthroscopy, Bruce Reider from The American Journal of Sport Medicine and Edward Wojtys from Sports Health. © 2020, The Author(s)
The Beginning of Work of the Higher Primary School in Virovitica with Special Reference to the Construction of the New School Building
After the development of higher primary schools in Croatia was shown, the author sets forth a new learning about the beginning of Higher Primary School in Virovitica on the basis of the insight into the materials. There are also shown the apprenticeship essentials according to which the Higher Elementary School in Virovitica began its work, the teachers who worked there during the first school year, as well as the students who successfully finished the first year. The construction of the new school building for Higher Primary School in Virovitica is also shown
Dimethyl fumarate ameliorates hepatic inflammation in alcohol related liver disease
Background & Aims: Alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) comprises different liver disorders which impose a health care issue. ALD and particularly alcoholic steatohepatitis, an acute inflammatory condition, cause a substantial morbidity and mortality as effective treatment options remain elusive. Inflammation in ALD is fuelled by macrophages (Kupffer cells [KCs]) which are activated by intestinal pathogen associated molecular patterns, eg lipopolysaccharide (LPS), disseminated beyond a defective intestinal barrier. We hypothesized that the immunomodulator dimethyl-fumarate (DMF), which is approved for the treatment of human inflammatory conditions such as multiple sclerosis or psoriasis, ameliorates the course of experimental ALD. Methods: Dimethyl-fumarate or vehicle was orally administered to wild-type mice receiving a Lieber-DeCarli diet containing 5% ethanol for 15 days. Liver injury, steatosis and inflammation were evaluated by histology, biochemical- and immunoassays. Moreover, we investigated a direct immunosuppressive effect of DMF on KCs and explored a potential impact on ethanol-induced intestinal barrier disruption. Results: Dimethyl-fumarate protected against ethanol-induced hepatic injury, steatosis and inflammation in mice. Specifically, we observed reduced hepatic triglyceride and ALT accumulation, reduced hepatic expression of inflammatory cytokines (Tnf-α, Il-1β, Cxcl1) and reduced abundance of neutrophils and macrophages in ethanol-fed and DMF-treated mice when compared to vehicle. DMF protected against ethanol-induced barrier disruption and abrogated systemic LPS concentration. In addition, DMF abolished LPS-induced cytokine responses of KCs. Conclusions: Dimethyl-fumarate counteracts ethanol-induced barrier dysfunction, suppresses inflammatory responses of KCs and ameliorates hepatic inflammation and steatosis, hallmarks of experimental ALD. Our data indicates that DMF treatment might be beneficial in human ALD and respective clinical trials are eagerly awaited
Configurations of points and strings
Let X be a smooth projective variety of dimension n ≥ 2 . It is shown that a finite configuration of points on X subject to certain geometric conditions possesses rich inner structure. On the mathematical level this inner structure is a variation of Hodge-like structure. As a consequence one can attach to such point configurations:
Lie algebras and their representations;
a Fano toric variety whose hyperplane sections are Calabi–Yau varieties.
These features imply that the points cease to be zero-dimensional objects and acquire dynamics of linear operators “propagating” along the paths of a particular trivalent graph. Furthermore, following particular linear operators along the “shortest” paths of the graph, one creates, for every point of the configuration, a distinguished hyperplane section of the Fano variety in (ii), i.e. the points “open up” to become Calabi–Yau varieties. Thus one is led to a picture which is very suggestive of quantum gravity according to string theory
The development of apprentice (vocational) education in Croatia
U članku je dan povijesni pregled razvoja obrtničkog školstva u Hrvatskoj – od naukovanja do osnutka šegrtskih (obrtničkih) škola. Tijekom 19. i 20. stoljeća, do današnjih dana, autor analizira sadržaj i promjene nastavnih planova, organizaciju rada škole, nazive škola, upravu škola, učenike (šegrte, naučnike), učitelje (nastavnike), financiranje škole i naukovanja kod obrtnika.At the beginning of the article the apprenticeship till the founding of the apprentice (vocational) schools in Croatia is described, as well as the founding of the apprentice (vocational) schools. Later on, the author follows the development of vocational education through the historical development, from the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy until the establishing of the Republic of Croatia, by describing the conditions and changes connected to the curriculum and the organization of school activities, the name of the school, students (apprentices, trainees), teachers, the financing of the school and the apprenticeship with the tradesmen
