ROHINTON MISTRY AS A DIASPORIC AUTHOR

    No full text
The writings of the Indian Diaspora have received a great deal of attention and critical acclaim throughout the world. Rohinton Mistry is a well renowned author in the contemporary commonwealth literature and occupies a significant place among the writers of Indian Diaspora. Even though he is settled in Canada; it is his upbringing in Mumbai that reflects in all his writings. The distinct Mumbai culture, particularly the Parsee way of life, the people of the city and even the politics of India are major themes in his novels. Rohinton Mistry as a writer of Diaspora has carved a niche for himself. His works such as: “Tales from Firozsha Baag”, “Such A Long Journey”, “A Fine Balance” and “Family Matters”;mark a new kind of writing, resulting from a fragmented, splintered world. As a Diasporic Parsi writer, very sensitively he has recalled his community’s journey through time and history with a sense of loss and nostalgia. His books portray diverse facets of Indian socioeconomic life; as well as Parsi Zoroastrian life, customs, and religion. Many of his writings are markedly “Indo-nostalgic”. Rohinton Mistry through his Diasporic discourse has well depicted his ancestral background, his community’s engaged situation in a metropolis like Bombay and his deep attachment with and nostalgia for a world gone by. In this paper an attempt has been made to delineate diasporic discourse in the works of Rohinton Mistry. Although he is obsessed with the colonial and postcolonial experiences in India, we can find some traces of Canada in his literature. His characters dream of being integrated into, and accepted by, Canadian society on the one hand and on the other hand, these same characters are torn by an insatiable desire to be true to their native culture; to honor and cherish their own, distinct cultural identity

A Novel Airframe Design Methodology For Silent Aircraft

    No full text
The impact of noise on civil aviation is not just a localised airport problem, but a global concern, due to the ever-increasing demands for passenger travel. The challenge of designing a ‘Silent Aircraft’ lies within the development, integration, and optimisation of efficient airframe-engine technologies. This research study investigates the design of novel airframes with the aim of producing a methodology that incorporates airframe noise. Studies investigating the design of Broad Deltas (BD), Blended Wing Bodies (BWB), and Joined Wing airframe configurations are integrated with innovative propulsion systems designs to identify key parameters in order to design a Silent Aircraft. The airframe configuration plays an important role in the total aircraft noise, where the novel airframes that are analysed, are compared to a datum ‘baseline’ aircraft. All novel configurations show significant improvements in airframe noise reduction, enhanced by the addition of ultra-efficient propulsion systems, for which integration studies are discussed. The research into novel airframes uses a developed design methodology which integrates design considerations such as aerodynamics, performance, and cost models to complement the noise analysis and identify the most silent airframe configuration. The research goal was to identify a silent airframe solution for a future viable short-medium range airliner, where the final solutions described suggest proposals for the future development of aviation. The proposals suggested describe a short-term solution to the noise challenge, with a longer-term solution to aid the development of technologies, maturity in technology release levels (TRLs), and development of a future 2050 medium capacity civil airliner

Leakage power minimisation techniques for embedded processors

Leakage power is a growing concern in modern technology nodes. In some current and emerging applications, speed performance is uncritical but many of these applications rely on untethered power making energy a primary constraint. Leakage power minimisation is therefore key to maximising energy efficiency for these applications. This thesis proposes two new leakage power minimisation techniques to improve the energy efficiency of embedded processors. The first technique, called sub-clock power gating, can be used to reduce leakage power during the active mode. The technique capitalises on the observation that there can be large combinational idle time within the clock period in low performance applications and therefore power gates it. Sub-clock power gating is the first study into the application of power gating within the clock period, and simulation results on post layout netlists using a 90nm technology library show 3.5x, 2x and 1.3x improvement in energy efficiency for three test cases: 16-bit multiplier, ARM Cortex-M0 and Event Processor at a given performance point. To reduce the energy cost associated with moving between the sleep and active mode of operation, a second technique called symmetric virtual rail clamping is proposed. Rather than shutting down completely during sleep mode, the proposed technique uses a pair of NMOS and PMOS transistors at the head and foot of the power gated logic to lower the supply voltage by 2Vth. This reduces the energy needed to recharge the supply rails and eliminates signal glitching energy cost during wake-up. Experimental results from a 65nm test chip shows application of symmetric virtual rail clamping in sub-clock power gating improves energy efficiency, extending its applicable clock frequency range by 400x. The physical layout of power gating requires dedicated techniques and this thesis proposes dRail, a new physical layout technique for power gating. Unlike the traditional voltage area approach, dRail allows both power gated and non-power gated cells to be placed together in the physical layout to reduce area and routing overheads. Results from a post layout netlist of an ARM Cortex-M0 with sub-clock power gating shows standard cell area and signal routing are improved by 3% and 19% respectively. Sub-clock power gating, symmetric virtual rail clamping and dRail are incorporated into power gating design flows and are compatible with commercial EDA tools and gate libraries

India is a multi-lingual, multi-cultural and multi-ethnic country, and it is one of the major demands of post-coloniality that Transcreation work should be carried on for the sake of literary expansion, national integration and international co-operation. The purpose of this Research Paper is to dwell on the relevance and usefulness of Transcreation as well as creative use of English in the fiction of Rohinton Mistry with reference to his novels Such a Long Journey (1991), A Fine Balance (1996) and Family Matters (2002). Rohinton Mistry mixes Hindi words along with Urdu, Gujarati and Parsi words in his narration to reinforce the impact of his narrative. Mistry being a Diasporic author experimented with the bilingual –and the bicultural competence of the reader in creating a hybrid identity that is typically and multiculturally Indian. Key words- Transcreation, Multi-lingual, Multicultural, Parsi
