Wild Galois representations:elliptic curves over a 3-adic field

    Get PDF
Given an elliptic curve EE over a local field KK with residue characteristic 33, we investigate the action of the absolute Galois group of KK in the case of potentially good reduction. The hardest case is when the \ell-adic Galois representation attached to EE has non-cyclic inertia image, isomorphic to C3C4C_3 \rtimes C_4. In this work we describe such a representation explicitly.<br/

Wild Galois representations:elliptic curves over a 2-adic field with non-abelian inertia action

In this paper we present a description of the \ell-adic Galois representation attached to an elliptic curve defined over a 22-adic field KK, in the case where the image of inertia is non-abelian. There are two possibilities for the image of inertia, namely Q8Q_8 and \SL_2(\F_3), and in each case we need to distinguish whether the inertia degree of KK over \Q_2 is even or odd. The result presented here are being implemented in an algorithm to compute explicitly the Galois representation in these four cases

Wild Galois representations: a family of hyperelliptic curves with large inertia image

    Get PDF
In this work we generalise the main result of [1] to the family of hyperelliptic curves with potentially good reduction over a p-adic field which have genus g=(p-1)/2 and the largest possible image of inertia under the ℓ-adic Galois representation associated to its Jacobian. We will prove that this Galois representation factors as the tensor product of an unramified character and an irreducible representation of a finite group, which can be either equal to the inertia image (in which case the representation is easily determined) or a C2-extension of it. In this second case, there are two suitable representations and we will describe the Galois action explicitly in order to determine the correct one.</p

Thermal unrest at La Fossa (Vulcano Island, Italy): the 2021–2023 VIIRS 375 m MIROVA-processed dataset

Remotely sensed thermal data have been globally recognised as an effective and reliable tool to detect and quantify signs of volcanic unrest (Furtney et al. 2018; Reath et al. 2019; Coppola et al. 2020). Together with ground-truth data, satellite-retrieved information (i.e. thermal flux) enables scientists and researchers to monitor the evolution of volcanic activity (Ramsey and Harris 2013; Laiolo et al. 2019; Coppola et al. 2020). The aim of these investigations has long focused on volcanoes exhibiting surficial lava manifestations. Recent studies, however, revealed that thermal remote sensing can effectively track volcanic unrest at quiescent volcanoes showing background fumarolic activity and thermal features associated with hydrothermal systems (Reath et al. 2016; Furtney et al. 2018). Amongst these systems, Vulcano Island (Italy, lat. 38.40°N, lon. 14.96°E; Fig. 1(a)) has long intrigued the scientific community, supporting the construction of a comprehensive database of ground- and space-based thermal data

Sofia Coppola : the politics of visual pleasure

All too often, the movies of Sofia Coppola have been dismissed as "all style, no substance." But such an easy caricature, as this engaging and accessible survey of Coppola's oeuvre demonstrates, fundamentally miscontrues what are rich, ambiguous, meaningful films. Drawing on insights from feminist philosophy and psychology, the author here takes an original approach to Coppola, exploring vital themes from the subversion of patriarchy in The Virgin Suicides to the "female gothic" in The Beguiled. As Rogers shows, far from endorsing a facile and depoliticized postfeminism, Coppola's films instead deploy beguilement, mood, and pleasure in the service of a robustly feminist philosophy
