    Get PDF

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

English Renaissance Tragedy: Kyd’s the Spanish Tragedy and Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus in perspective

In this paper, I shall be trying to investigate the nature of the English Renaissance drama through two prominent examples: Thomas Kyd\u27s The Spanish Tragedy (1556-1857) and Christopher Marlowe\u27s Doctor Faustus (1588-1593). In order to carry out this aim Kyd\u27s play (probably performed 1586–7), will be looked at as the first successful English example of tragedy, for its force and originality was widely acknowledged, and Marlowe\u27s play (probably performed 1592) as an artistic expression of the Renaissance spirit, a recreation of the Faust legend. The English idea of a Renaissance tragedy seems here to be a mixture of the ideas of Aristotle, Seneca, and English medieval tradition but with a significant step ahead necessitated by the Renaissance artistic and intellectual achievements. Thus to illuminate this process of transformation, the paper will start by tracing the development of the conception of tragedy, from classical times until the Renaissance period, and then spotlighting the close link between the native dramatic tradition and the classical influence with an eye on the English contribution. The critical approach followed can be described as descriptive and sometimes as historical in certain aspects. The texts of the two plays will be used as a primary source and other relevant critical works as a secondary source that sheds some light on the main topi

A Note on the Issue of Modern Tragedy: Chekhov’ Plays Perspective

    Get PDF
This research work aims at emphasizing the peculiar nature of modern tragedy and the necessity of assessing this tragedy through its own terms, for it is inaccurate to interpret this drama in terms of a different dramatic tradition. This issue has led actually some crit- ics to deal with the plays as comedies or tragi-comedies, including Chekhov’s plays. The work provides a comprehensive critical survey of the development of the idea of tragedy, trying to spotlight the main theoretical notions and the relevant supporting arguments. the classi- cal, the renaissance, the pre-modern and modern. The different critical opinions produced on the nature and function of tragedy leads to a synoptic display of the notions, with citations about the main points to iiluminate the purpose of the study. The debate is that modern plays, among them the works of Chekhov, can be considered through an amalgamation of the comic and tragic elements, in addition to other artistic features. The sources of this incongruity are various: inade- quacy or delusion, foolishness or bureaucracy, failure or dejection, the inability or insignificance of the individual in a changing society, : the naturalistic forces beyond human control, and paralysis of human will or anti-heroism. The special artistic mode Chekhov followed in his plays in approximating and interpreting reality produces an open and ambiguous ending .Besides, Chekhov held a non-sentimental ob- jective view of reality and his synthesis of the comic and tragic is an ‘illustration of his artistic assessment. Technically speaking, the work offers a series of themes, ideas, and observations made through a criti-cal discussion of the issue of modern tragedy. Examining the modem conception of tragedy necessitates citations from the different critical writings produced over a long period of time, without which the dis- cussion of such a wide and complicated issue would remain incom- plet

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Shakespeare\u27s Hamlet and Chekhov\u27s Ivanov and the Type of the Russian Intellectual of the Late 19th Century Russia

Shakespeare’s Hamlet influenced Chekhov\u27s plays, from Ivanov to The Cherry Orchard. Ivanov was the first genuine literary figure to be created by Chekhov and his version of the character of the Russian Hamlet. This study is not only concerned with the Hamletian elements in Ivanov, but it also tries to stress the fact that Chekhov was casting an eye on Hamlet while creating the character of his protagonist. The personality of the hero of this play still provokes critical arguments. However, the work here looks at Ivanov as a tragic character, the Russian Hamlet of the 1880s, and views the character as one of the idealistic, psychologically tortured and paralyzed intellectual, and in the latest tradition of the superfluous man. It also examines how far Chekhov was held by critics to have created a world – weary character with particular relevance to the Russia of the 1880s, a time of disillusionment and despair for a generation of Russian intellectuals. With particular reference and comparison with the Shakespearian hero, and taking the historical moments into consideration, this work will try to analyze the complex psychology of Ivanov which was a matter of some difficulty for its creator

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    Get PDF
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
