Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Şanlıurfa-Harran Ovasında traktör işletme parametrelerinin belirlenmesi ve analizi
Bu çalışma ile Şanlıurfa-Harran yöresinde tarımsal üretimde traktör kullanımının çeşitli parametrelerinin ortaya konulması; derlenen verileri analiz edip genelleştirilebilir sonuçlar elde ederek bölge çiftçisinin traktör kullanımına ilişkin eğiliminin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu kapsamda, iki aşamalı olarak yürütülen bu araştırmanın birinci aşamasında, ikinci el traktör pazarındaki traktörlerin teknik ve ekonomik özelliklerinin belirlenmesi amacıyla bilgi toplama formu hazırlanmıştır. İldeki traktör bayi, traktör alım-satım yapan galeri (komisyoncu) ve traktör pazarındaki satıcılarla yüz yüze görüşülerek 450 bilgi toplama formu doldurulmuştur. Araştırmanın ikinci aşamasında ise Şanlıurfa-Harran Ovasında, Şanlıurfa Merkez, Akçakale ve Harran ilçelerinden gayeli örnekleme yöntemi kullanılarak Harran Ovasını temsil edecek şekilde 14 köy belirlenmiş ve söz konusu köylerden tabakalı tesadüfi örnekleme yöntemine göre belirlenen 150 işletmeden traktör kullanımına ilişkin veri toplanmıştır. Her iki aşamada derlenen veriler farklı istatistik analiz programları yardımıyla analiz edilmiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlara göre, işletme bazında traktörlerin ortalama anma motor gücü 60 kW iken; ikinci el piyasasındaki traktörlerde bu değer 57 kW olarak belirlenmiştir. İşletmelerde bulunan traktörlerin yıllık ortalama kullanım süresi 550,6 h olarak elde edilirken, ikinci el piyasasındaki traktörlerin yıllık ortalama kullanım süresi 432,8 h olarak belirlenmiştir. Bununla birlikte traktörlerin kullanımla ilgili diğer işletme parametreleri arasında yer alan yaş, birim alana düşen motor gücü, yakıt tüketimi, tamir ve bakım giderleri, motor, dişli kutusu, hidrolik sistem, kabin-kaporta ve lastiklerin durumu, piyasa değeri, amortisman özellikleri vb parametreler hem ikinci el pazarındaki hem de işletmelerdeki traktörler için belirlenmiş ve elde edilen veriler çoklu regresyon analiziyle değerlendirilerek sonuçlar irdelenmiştir.Abstract This study aims to put forth various parameters of tractor use in agricultural production in Şanlıurfa-Harran region for consideration and to analyze the data collected from farmers as well as obtaining generalized results to determine the trend for the use of tractors among farmers in the region. Within this framework, at the first stage of the study that was conducted in two stages, a questionnaire was prepared to collect data on technical and financial characteristics of tractors in the second hand tractor market. 450 questionnaires were filled through face-to-face interviews with tractor dealers, owners of tractor galleries and tractor vendors in the province. At the second stage of the research, 14 villages in Şanlıurfa-Harran Plain, Central Şanlıurfa, Akçakale and the counties of the Harran Plain -that are representative of the Harran Plain in large- were identified randomly and information on the use of tractors was collected from 150 businesses that were selected through stratified random sampling in these 14 villages. The data collected in both stages was analyzed by different statistical analysis programs. It was observed that the rated engine power was 60 kW in enterprises on average, while this value was found to be 57 kW for tractors in the second hand market, and the average annual operating time of tractors being used in enterprises and second hand markets were found to be 550.6 h and 432.8 h, respectively. Moreover, operating parameters relevant to tractor use including engine power per unit area, fuel consumption, repair and maintenance costs, engine, gearbox, hydraulic system, cab-hood, tire condition, market value, depreciation parameters and specifications were determined for tractors both in enterprises and the second hand market, and obtained data was examined through multiple regression analysis for further evaluation and discussion
Determination of mechanization level and suitable multi-farm machinery using of the irrigated farms in Harran plain
In this study, in Şanlıurfa Harran Plain, the level of mechanization was determined in the irrigated farms and multi-farm machinery usage model, which will provide that to benefit from the same machinery park to the farms which were not able to use machinery at the proper level and to convert idle capacity into production, was determined. For this purpose, it was collected statistical data between 1990-2001 and conducted surveys in the 15 villages located in the area of Şanlıurfa Fırat Irrigation Association selected for the common machinery usage, and collected the information obtained from the other surveys and studies conducted before for the other projects. The parcellation map of Fırat Irrigation Association with the scale of 1/25 000 and the network map which was prepared for the same region by the State Hydraulic Works (DSI) were used. Afterwards, entrance points of tractor were determined in each parcel and marked on a digital map by a computer program. The transportation model, a special type of linear programming, was fitted to establish the organization of the common machinery usage by considering criteria of crop pattern, working days, farm size, road length, etc. in the sample area through the data obtained from the study. With the fitted model, each parcel accepted as demand center (923 parcels) is provided with the equipments at the enough capacity level and number from each village (15 villages) accepted as supply center. Key Words : Harran Plain, multi-farm machinery using model, mechanization level, optimization, transportation modeling.Bu çalışmada, Şanlıurfa Harran Ovasında sulu tarım yapan işletmelerde makina kullanım düzeyi ile yeterli makina kullanım düzeyine erişememiş işletmelerin aynı makina parkından faydalanabilmesini, atıl mekanizasyon kapasitesinin üretime dönüştürülmesini sağlayacak ortak makina kullanım modeli ortaya konulmuştur. Bu amaçla 1990-2001 yıllan arasındaki istatistiksel veriler ile ortak makina kullanımı için seçilen Şanlıurfa Fırat Sulama Birliği alanında yer alan 15 köyde yapılan anketler ve bu birlikte daha önce farklı projeler kapsamında yapılan anket ve çalışmalardan elde edilen bilgiler derlenmiştir. Bu kapsamda Fırat Sulama Birliği parselizasyon haritasının 1/25000 ölçeği ile DSl'nin aynı bölgede hazırlamış olduğu şebeke haritası kullanılmıştır. Daha sonra her parselde traktörün giriş noktalan tespit edilmiş ve bir bilgisayar programı ile dijital ortamdaki haritaya işlenmiştir. Bu yöntemle her köyden mevcut parsellere giden yol uzunlukları belirlenmiştir. Çalışma kapsamında elde edilen veriler doğrultusunda, örnek alanın ürün deseni, çalışılabilir gün, işletme büyüklükleri, yol uzunlukları vb kriterler göz önüne alınarak ortak makina kullanım organizasyonunu gerçekleştirmek üzere doğrusal programlamanın özel bir şekli olan ulaştırma modeli uygulanmıştır. Elde edilen modelle talep merkezi olarak kabul edilen her parsele (923 parsel), arz merkezi olarak kabul edilen her köyden (15 köy) yeterli kapasite ve sayıda en ekonomik bir biçimde alet ve ekipmanın iletilmesi sağlanmış olmaktadır.
