Malaysian website for mental health awareness
No full textA mental health awareness website established in 2017 by a professor of psychiatry at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is proving timely for helping people through the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Psychiatric illnesses such as depression and anxiety have been consistently on the rise in Malaysia over the past 20 years,” says IIUM consultant psychiatrist Ramli Musa.
“Nevertheless, awareness about mental health issues is still low and treatment is often delayed due to the stigma attached in Malaysian society.”
To address this, Musa established a user-friendly website that offers reading materials in Malay and English, providing guidance on how, where and when to find mental health treatment in Malaysia, in addition to information about the symptoms of diseases like depression and anxiety
Important criteria for measuring heritage building condition
No full textThe excellence condition of a heritage building lies not only in the appearance of its individual elements, but also in the integrity of all its components, considered as unique criteria of the specific construction technology of its time and place. However, these criteria are varied and not specific. Therefore, this study aimed to identify and rank the important criteria for measuring the condition of heritage buildings in Malaysia. Data obtained through questionnaire and analyzed using Average Index (AI) in order to establish the important criteria. Samples were selected from a panel of experts in the field of heritage buildings management including industry players and academicians. The established criteria will be used as components to develop a new method of heritage building condition determination model in Malaysia

From a total of 600 selected respondents, 588 agreed to participate and 8 were excluded. From 580 respondents, 81.7 % were Malays, 8.8% were Chinese and 9.5% were other races. Of these participants, 57% were females and 43% obtained secondary education. The age range is between 13 to 61 years. This indicates as early as 13 year-old could understand the scale. The sample is adequate as the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin values are 0.93 which is very good.
Based on analysis of 43 initial items, most of the items had good Cronbach’s alpha values. The lowest Cronbach’s value of initial 43 items is 6.92. Based on explanatory factor analysis with Varimax rotation on initial 43 items, we decided to omit 13 items which had poor factor loadings, reason of redundancy, poor outcome based on feedbacks during pre-test and other statistical analyses. Next analysis is based on 30 finalized items.
Based analysis with Varimax rotation without force, we obtained very good and nicely identified 30 items with 5 domains. The 30 analyzed items were having good factor loadings as displayed in table 2. The factor loading are nicely fit into their respective domains. The 5 identified domains are namely Togetherness/Harmony (factor 1), Expression (factor 2), Relationship & Family dynamic (factor 3), Conflict (factor 4) and Religiosity & Traditional Practice (factor 5). Overall Cronbach’s alpha is very good (0.90). When we analyzed Cronbach’s alpha for each one of 5 domains, we managed to get the values of 0.67, 0.814, 0.71, 0.74 and 0.77 for factor 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 respectively.
The Scree plot suggests that the point where the slope of the curve is clearly leveling off (the “elbow) is when five domains were constructed. We decided on five domains and this is in line with Eigenvalue more than one.
This new scale has good psychometric properties and it is valid as a scale for Malaysian population. Asian family values are different from western which require a special psychometric tool. This newly prepared scale looks set to serve research purposes well.
What are the advantages of this scale?
1. This scale is specifically designed to cater the need for Malaysian multi-ethnic population. We include religious and traditional practice in Asia.
2. We incorporate the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) in this scale.
3. This scale focuses on both nuclear family and extended family. In the aspect of Asian population, extended family still plays a major role as a family support.
4. We also emphasis on local concepts of Asian and Malaysian family such as religious aspect and leisure activities as they are more pertinent to Asian such as going for walk in lake garden, vacation, shopping, going to mosque or temple so on so forth.

Konflik personaliti mampu gugat perpaduan - Pakar
Get PDFKUALA LUMPUR: Individu yang suka mempermainkan perkara serius sehingga menyentuh soal sensitiviti individu lain diklasifikasikan mengalami konflik personaliti anti sosial. Ini termasuk golongan yang berkecenderungan untuk menyinggung perasaan kaum dan agama pihak lain.
Hanya keinsafan dan kesedaran dalam diri mampu mengubah sikap dan perilaku buat mereka yang berdepan masalah tersebut.
Menurut Ketua Jabatan Psikiatri Kulliyyah Perubatan Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIAM), Profesor Madya Dr. Ramli Musa, isu agama merupakan antara perkara yang jelas mengenai hukum dan batasannya dan tidak seharusnya dijadikan bahan jenaka.
"Dalam aspek psikiatri, seseorang individu dianggap mempunyai masalah personaliti anti sosial jika dia berdepan dengan hal sedemikian. Antara kesan konflik sebegini ialah mereka kurang sensitif terhadap isu-isu tertentu terhadap masyarakat tertentu," kata Dr. Ramli.
Beliau menambah, masyarakat di Malaysia seharusnya lebih peka dan memahami konsep kepelbagaian kaum dan agama di sini. Justeru, mereka perlu bersikap lebih sensitif dengan isu yang berkaitan dengan sesuatu agama dan budaya.
Ditanya mengenai tindakan yang patut dilakukan bagi mengatasi konflik personaliti anti sosial, Dr. Ramli menyatakan hukuman setimpal sewajarnya dikenakan kepada individu yang disabitkan bersalah melampaui sensitiviti agama dan kaum lain. Namun, disebabkan ia bukan masalah mental yang serius, hukuman yang dikenakan kepada individu tersebut harus bersifat pengajaran agar perkara serupa tidak berulang.
"Sesi rawatan pemulihan seperti kaunseling agak kurang praktikal dan sukar menangani gejala ini kerana pesakit mungkin memberikan pelbagai alasan untuk mengelak sekiranya diminta menjalani sesi kaunseling, Hanya hukuman setimpal mampu dijadikan pengajaran untuk diri individu terbabit dan juga masyarakat."
Beliau turut berpesan agar masyarakat seharusnya tidak sewenang-wenangnya memusnahkan perpaduan yang terjalin di dalam negara ini kerana usaha untuk memupuk keharmonian merupakan usaha berpanjangan yang dijalankan semua pihak

Get PDFThis study examined the impact of selected macroeconomic variables on the performance of Malaysia stock market over the study period from year 1992 to 2017. The selected macroeconomic variables are interest rate, exchange rate, inflation rate, money supply and oil price. This study applied Ordinary Least Square method (OLS) to determine the effect of selective variables on stock market performance by using 100 quarterly data observations. The empirical results suggest that exchange rate and oil price has statistically significant positive effect on Malaysia stock market performance while interest rate and money supply has statistically significant negative effect on Malaysia stock market performance. However, inflation is found out to be insignificant in determining the stock market performance of Malaysia

No full textIntroduction; Research in the field of family study in Malaysia is facing a setback as there is no validated instrument to explore the family environment. The intensifying social related problems such as illegal racing, substance misuses, conduct disorder, physical and sexual abuse, indicate that exploration on family environment is essential. The idea to invent a new scale was triggered based on poor outcomes of previous research project “Translation and Validation of the Family Environment Scale (FES) Questionnaire” which was funded by Ministry of Health Malaysia (HKL/98/CRC/ER/180/07) [Publication; Khairani & Ramli M et al]. The results of this project show that direct translation and adopting of western questionnaire is not always feasible as Asian family values are different.
Objectives: To invent and validate a new family scale (English & Bahasa Malaysia) that will be reliable and validated for the Malaysian population.
Methodology; The development of the questionnaire can be divided into 6 stages; (1) Identifying the domains of harmony family and disharmony family, (2) Identify items for each domain, (3) language experts review, (4) pretest on the final version, (5) pilot study with small number of subjects and (6) actual validation of the questionnaire to a total of 600 subjects from various ethnic groups, age and level of education.
Results; 588 participants; 86 % were Malays, 14% Chinese. 59% were females & 43% obtained secondary education. Reliability; Cronbach’s alpha of 0.9 and 5 domains were identified by using explanatory factor analysis with Varimax rotation. Validity; From 43 items, 67% had good factor loading (>0.4).
