The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has recently revised its GHG strategy, setting an unprecedented ambition for international shipping to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by or around 2050. To meet this target and other intermediate goals in the coming decades, it is essential to have a comprehensive understanding of potential demand scenarios for shipping, fuel pathways for the sector, and their associated emissions. While Life-Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and sectoral models provide valuable insights for specific case studies, additional modelling approaches are needed for a more holistic assessment of the sector. Thus, linking bottom-up shipping emission models can aid in exploring the heterogeneity of emissions across the shipping fleet, while Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) can integrate the shipping sector with the global energy system. Providing more detailed modelling frameworks can be crucial for hard-to-abate sectors like shipping, especially in the context of deep mitigation scenarios. To address that, the MariTeam model has been developed leveraging highresolution spatial data collected from the Automatic Identification System (AIS) to build present-day and future emission inventories. Results from this approach are linked to the IAM MESSAGE-ix to produce mitigation scenarios for the shipping sector including aggregated representations of the energy and land-use systems. To date, no studies have combined bottom-up shipping energy demand with life-cycle emissions in a framework that links sectoral and global energy systems, nor have they been evaluated in light of the new IMO targets. Consequently, the literature might offer only a partial view of the solution space. This work addresses this gap and is structured around five publications of increasing scope. By focusing on modelling energy demand and potential adoption of alternative fuels, this thesis expands on energy demand scenarios for the sector within different decarbonization trajectories. The findings underscore the critical role of alternative fuels, along with energy efficiency improvements, in reducing emissions from the international maritime sector over the coming decades

Funnene indikerer at regnskapet for alle utslipp innenfor Norges økonomiske sone gir 43% høyere utslipp enn rapporterte estimater. The maritime shipping sector is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, accounting for nearly 3% of total anthropogenic CO2 emissions. In response to climate change, the Paris Agreement and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) have set ambitious emission reduction targets, pursuing effort at keeping global temperature rise below 1.5°C and well below 2°C and achieving net-zero GHG emission from international shipping by 2050. Achieving these targets is crucial for global climate goals but remains challenging due to the expected growth in maritime trade. In this thesis, a comparison between ship emissions estimates in 2017 reported in the 2024 Norwegian National Inventory Report (NIR) has been conducted using the state-of-the-art, ship emissions model MariTEAM. In addition to the comparison, the emission reduction potential of alternative maritime fuels and onboard carbon capture systems has been explored. Two primary approaches have been applied to investigate potential discrepancies between estimates reported in the 2024 NIR and esti- mates from MariTEAM. The first approach has focused on accounting for all tank-to-wake emissions from ships inside the Norwegian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The second approach is based on the definition of national sea traffic used in the NIR, where emissions from national sea traffic only encompass emissions occurring between two Norwegian ports. The findings indicate that accounting for all emissions within the Norwegian EEZ yields 43% higher emission compared to reported esti- mates. Conversely, the port-to-port approach drastically underestimates emissions, resulting in over five times lower emissions compared to the reported estimate. By comparing with other official evaluations of the same nature from DNV and IMO, the Norwegian EEZ approach yields the most realistic discrepancy, consistent with the consensus in the literature. The port-to-port emissions, while being consistent with the definition used in the NIR, yields neither expected nor realistic emission levels. In addition to assessing conventional Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) and Marine Gas Oil (MGO), this thesis has evaluated alternative fuels such as ammonia, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and methanol. The results show that LNG provides the most considerable reduction in emissions among the alternative fuels, despite notable methane emissions. Ammonia, while notably reducing CO2 emissions, was found to increase the aggregated emissions due to high levels of N2O emissions. Methanol demonstrated only marginal improvements in emission reductions when compared to the conventional fuels. The most promising results came from the OCCS scenario, which showed substantial reduction in overall emissions, at the cost of increased SOx emissions due to higher fuel consumption required to operate the OCCS system. The thesis concludes that while alternative fuels and OCCS are promising measures for emission reduction, there are significant technological and economic challenges that must be addressed to achieve large-scale adoption. Furthermore, this thesis underscores the importance of ongoing assessments and improvements in emission accounting methodologies to ensure accurate and comprehensive reporting of maritime emissions

Først estimeres manglende tekniske parametere for skipet.

This study explores the role of the carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) ratio in the potential of macroalgae open-ocean farming and sinking (MOS) as a negative emission technology for carbon dioxide removal (CDR). Utilizing the University of Victoria Earth System Climate Model, two scenarios were simulated to assess how different C:N ratios of macroalgae for MOS impact the CDR capacity and the carbon cycle feedback. The results indicate that a higher C:N ratio enhances the CDR capacity by increasing the carbon uptake in the ocean. Specifically, modelling a higher C:N ratio leads to a greater reduction in atmospheric CO2 levels and a 6-year delay in surpassing the 1.5 °C temperature thresholds, as outlined by the Paris Agreement. The increased uptake of carbon in the ocean by MOS is likely due to replacing phytoplankton with macroalgae thereby strengthening the uptake of the oceanic biological carbon pump. A higher C:N ratio indicated an increased enhancement of the biological carbon pump. The model results show, that the increased uptake by the ocean triggers feedback mechanisms within the carbon cycle, affecting ter- restrial carbon absorption negatively. The carbon flux from the atmosphere to the terrestrial ecosystem for a high C:N ratio was observed to be reduced by 188 % compared to the baseline scenario. Modelling a low C:N ratio leads to a reduction of the carbon uptake by land by 120 %. In both scenarios modelling the deployment of MOS, causes the land to turn from a carbon sink into a carbon source, partially offsetting the mitigation effect of MOS. The findings underscore the importance of considering the macroalgal C:N ratio in further research, aimed at deploying MOS as a CDR method, to maximize MOS’s climate change mitigation potential

The aviation sector currently contributes to about 2.4% of the global anthropogenic CO2 emissions annually. However, the current best estimates points to aviation contrails contributing to as much climate forcing as CO2 emissions. Improvements in engine and energy efficiency are not sufficient to keep up with the projected growth in emissions in the aviation sector, and implementation of additional mitigation options needs to be thoroughly considered. With contrails having a potentially significant role in climate impact of aviation, modelling of contrails and quantification of their climate forcings are at the forefront of climate change mitigation research in the aviation sector. This thesis investigates the opportunity to expand the framework of the Aviation Transport Emission Assessment Model (AviTeam) with the Contrail Cirrus Prediction (CoCiP) model, to also account for contrail formations resulting from aviation emissions. The new AviTeam-CoCiP framework is tested on a data set consisting of the domestic flights in Norway 2019. The thesis identifies the strengths and limitations of this new framework, and compares the results of the contrail simulations with the literature. The simulation results estimates the mean net instantaneous radiative forcing (RF') in the data set to be 1.23 W/m^2, and the energy forcing (EF) per flight distance to be 0.0163*10^8 J/m. Compared to the global values in 2019, the difference in the former metric is only +0.8%, while the difference in the latter metric is -90%. Based on the characteristics of the flights included in this study, compared to those in the global estimations, it is deduced that short haul flights, which typically flies at lower altitudes, might contribute to significantly less contrail climate forcing compared to the longer haul flights. Further, the statistics in this study shows the expected large variation in EF depending on the season and time of day. Despite the distribution of air traffic being relatively even among the seasons, the winter (December, January and February) and autumn (September, October and November) months were responsible for 81% of the annual total contrail EF. Moreover, only 26% of the flight distance was travelled between the hours 18:00 and 06:00, but this time period accounted for 93% of the total contrail EF of the day. It is also found that 2% of the flights are responsible for 80% of the annual total contrail EF. These large differences in contrail climate forcings are closely linked to the different amount of sunlight available at the time of flight, which depends on the seasons and the time of day. Thus, the results reveals the specific characteristics of contrails produced by domestic flights in Norway, and also underlines the necessity and value of geospatially and temporarily explicit emissions modelling tools such as the AviTeam for contrails climate impact modelling

Though emissions per unit of goods transported are lower than any other mode of transport, the fleet is experiencing increasing pressure to reduce global emissions. NTNU has developed a maritime transport emission assessment model (MariTEAM), as part of the research project CLIMMS - Climate mitigation in the maritime sector. MariTEAM is a computational model for the fuel consumption and emissions to air from the world shipping fleet. This thesis contributes by developing and validating a new ship powering performance method suitable for the MariTEAM model. The current state of knowledge in the field of global fleet-wide power predictions has been reviewed. In line with the literature, various empirical methods are implemented in the model developed in this thesis, which is subdivided into five modules. First, missing input parameters are estimated for the ship. The calm water resistance is calculated, followed by added resistance in wind and waves. Then the propulsive efficiency is determined before the final power is obtained. As a result, the new method can predict the propulsion power in realistic sea-states, for a wide range of ships in the fleet, while requiring few input parameters. A case study of seven diverse vessels is applied to validate the powering performance of the new model. The validation data include model test reports, sea trial reports and in-service data from voyages. Based on the study, a final new power prediction method is presented. Validation against model test reports and sea trials show that the new model achieves powering predictions with a mean deviation of + - 3 % and standard deviation of 6 % for exact input parameters. When parameter estimates are applied for missing input, deviations are within 10 % for the power predictions. Validation against in-service data demonstrates that the powering predictions and the in-service measurements correspond well if the correct loading condition is applied

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Green hydrogen in maritime shipping along the Norwegian coast - A Scenario-Based Lide Cycle Assessment

Current efforts to reduce global warming in the shipping sector, are not sufficient to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. This thesis presents a discussion on the implementation of a clean hydrogen value chain in coastal areas in Norway, considering the predicted increase in maritime fuel demand, the role of Norwegian ports, and the future imbalance in demand and production of electricity. Data from the MariTEAM model, a tool that calculates ships fuel demand, allowed a fleet perspective that includes variations in ship characteristics and fuel demand of different ship types. The analysis integrated the methods of Life Cycle Assessment, feasibility analysis, and sensitivity analysis, and compare the results with state-of-the-art knowledge and future predictions in the topic of hydrogen value chains. The results from the impact assessment indicate that short- to medium-sea shipping between coastal ports can reduce emissions significantly compared to conventional fuels, below predicted future emission limits, which will become increasingly important as the shipping sector is expected to grow. Hydrogen from on-grid electricity can potentially reduce emissions by over 80%, with further reductions possible through ramp up of offshore wind in the North Sea. Improving technological performance within the electrolysis, fuel cells, and material used in wind turbines, can also lower emissions of hydrogen value chains. In the medium to long term, hydrogen can cover large shares of fuel sales, but additional development within other fuel alternatives is required to cover all marine fuel demand. Developing some main hubs for hydrogen production and fueling in ports along the Norwegian coastline requires large areas and large amounts of electricity, but can also create large values, and place Norway in a key role in the future European hydrogen market

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
