Sufism and Insurgency: Religiosity and Cosmopolitanism in Schwarze Jungfrauen by Feridun Zaimoglu and Günter Senkel

    No full text
After the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Islam is increasingly being viewed as the Other of an enlightened and tolerant Germany. Turkish-German author Feridun Zaimoglu and his co-writer Günter Senkel destabilize these Western assumptions in the play Schwarze Jungfrauen (2006), in which performed monologues from the perspective of Muslim women evoke both fundamentalist and mystical (Sufi) manifestations of Islam. The play challenges contemporary cosmopolitan theory's engagement with religion, implying that its insistence upon the rational individual's exercise of free will is actually conducive to fundamentalism. Instead, Schwarze Jungfrauen suggests, corresponding with Jean-Luc Nancy's philosophy, that any hope of stemming religious fundamentalism rests not in the perpetuation of immanent identities and universalizing ideologies, but rather in notions of religiosity and community beyond representation. Thus, rather than acting as a barrier to cosmopolitan solidarities, Islam, in the form of Sufism, in fact provides inspiration for a non-identitarian religiosity that would avoid religion-based conflict

murat, sema/0000-0003-0632-5095; Cakmak, Gulce/0000-0003-1751-9207Purpose: The objectives of this in vitro study were to evaluate the flexural strength (FS), surface roughness (R-a), and hydrophobicity of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)-based computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) polymers and to compare the properties of different CAD/CAM PMMA-based polymers with conventional heat-polymerized PMMA following thermal cycling. Materials and methods: Twenty rectangular-shaped specimens (64 x 10 x 3.3 mm) were fabricated from three CAD/CAM PMMA-based polymers (M-PM Disc [M], AvaDent Puck Disc [A], and Pink CAD/CAM Disc Polident [P], and one conventional heat-polymerized PMMA (Promolux [C]), according to ISO 20795-1: 2013 standards. The specimens were divided into two subgroups (n = 10), a control and a thermocycled group. The specimens in the thermocycled group were subjected to 5000 thermal cycling procedures (5 to 55 degrees C; 30 s dwell times). The R-a value was measured using a profilometer. Contact angle (CA) was assessed using the sessile drop method to evaluate surface hydrophobicity. In addition, the FS of the specimens was tested in a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/min. Surface texture of the materials was assessed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Tukey's HSD post-hoc test (alpha 0.05). In the thermocycled group, the lowest R-a value was observed for CAD/CAM PMMA-based polymer [M] (P 0.05). Conventional PMMA [C] had a significantly lower CA and consequently lower hydrophobicity compared to the CAD/CAM polymers in the control group (P 0.05). Conclusions: The FS and hydrophobicity of the CAD/CAM PMMA-based polymers were higher than the conventional heat-polymerized PMMA, whereas the CAD/CAM PMMA-based polymers had similar R-a values to the conventional PMMA. Thermocycling had a significant effect on FS and hydrophobicity except for the R-a of denture base materials.Science Citation Index Expande

PRIHVAĆANJE ILI ODBIJANJE – DVIJE MOGUĆNOSTI ODNOSA PREMA INTERKULTURALNOSTI

The article shows the problems and possibilities of intercultural discourse on the example of two foreign born writers, Florjan Lipuš and Feridun Zaimoglu, within a German speaking context. As both of them initially applied literature as a means of protest against their respective hegemonic societies the role of subversion poses itself. It is possible to see how in one case, Zaimoglu, subversion gave way to acceptance, whereas in the second case, Lipuš, the author stagnated in his selfimposed role of the rebellious outsider. Marginality thus became a constituent part of dominant culture. One can see here that acceptance is not only a requirement from the majority, but that it can also be fruitful from a minority perspective

Papillary tumor of the pineal region

    No full text
Pineal region tumors make up 0.4-1.0% of intracranial tumors in adults. These tumors may arise from pineal gland itself or structures around pineal gland which are all termed as pineal region tumors. Papillary tumor of the pineal region is a non-parenchymal tumor of the pineal region. It was first documented in 2003. We presented a 21 years old female patient with pineal tumor. Supracerebellar infratentorial approach was performed. The total excision of the lesion was achieved successfully. Histopathological examination revealed papillary tumor of the pineal region. The case is discussed in the light of our preoperative surgical experience, its pre-and post-operative radiological and histopathological evaluation. Supracerebellar infratentorial approach is encountered as the favoured approach generally. As recurrence rates are high, adjuvant treatment is advised after surgery. Further research on this pathology will enlighten the neurosurgeons for effective treatment.</jats:p

    No full text
AIM: To review the cases of craniosynostosis secondary to ventricular shunting procedure.MATERIAL and METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the medical records of all pediatric patients with hydrocephalus who were treated with ventriculoperitoneal shunt procedure between the years 2017 and 2021 at the Selcuk University, Ankara University, and Bursa Uludag University.RESULTS: Twenty-one patients were included in the study. The median age at the time of insertion of ventriculoperitoneal shunt for hydrocephalus was 8.1 (range, 1-22) months. Seven patients were shunted because of congenital hydrocephalus. The mean time to development of secondary synostosis was 8.8 (range, 1-36) months. Plagiocephaly was the most common type of secondary synostosis. While shunt revision was performed in 16 patients, cranial vault expansion surgery was performed in 5 patients.CONCLUSION: Slit ventricle syndrome is a frequent condition at shunted patients, but there is no consensus on identifying patients who require treatment. Using programmable or high-pressure valves, performing cranial vault modeling are possible treatment modalities. Increased awareness of this condition in follow-up may allow early diagnosis and intervention and prevent it from evolving into more serious deformities

Organelle-level toxicity of nanometals relevant to titanium implants. Original research and comprehensive literature overview

    No full text
Objective: This study analyzed organelle toxicities of nanometals applied as free formulations or titanium rodcoating materials in rats. Methods: All materials were injected intraperitoneally, including the physiological saline applied to the control group. The first experimental group was implanted with nanosilver-coated titanium rods, and the second, third, and fourth groups received free nanosilver at rising levels. The fifth group was implanted with nanosilver, nanocopper, and nanozinc-coated titanium rods, and the sixth group received the same nanometals as free formulations. Light and electron microscopy and ICP-Mass Spectrometry were utilized to determine the neural, hepatic, and renal toxicities and tissue metal levels. Results: In brains, neuropil, myelin, and cellular damages occurred, especially in groups receiving high-dose nanosilver or nanometal combinations. Histiocyte accumulation and dark mitochondria within hepatocytes were discernible in the liver. Kidneys were the organs that were most severely affected by nanometal toxicity. The nephrotoxicity was apparent with the perturbations of the membrane infoldings and mitochondrial damage in the proximal and distal convoluted epithelia. Large angular peroxisomes developed inside the mesangial cells, and Golgi bodies increased in epithelial cells. Systemic metal levels increased on the thirtieth and prominently dropped on the sixtieth day. Conclusion: These results provide insights into the extent of injury and organelle targets of nanometals and will guide optimizing the nanomaterials and implants used in the surgical practice.Ankara University (Turkey) [15B0230011]This study was funded by Ankara University (Turkey) according to the project entitled Antibacterial and Antifungal Spine Implants with a funding number of 15B0230011

Could Fluorescein Staining in Low-Grade Glial Tumors Guide for Peroperative Differentiation of Pathological Types?

    No full text
AIM: To define whether characteristics of fluorescein staining help to distinguish low grade gliomas intraoperatively.MATERIAL and METHODS: We studied 46 patients with supratentorial newly diagnosed noncontrast-enhancing LGGs removed by fluorescence guidance under the YELLOW 560 nm filter. Patients who were treated between July 2019 and 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Clinical data were collected from patient records. Patients' intraoperative video recordings, pathological examination, and preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were analyzed and compared for each patient after the operation. Histopathologically, patients were divided into WHO Grade 2 oligodendrogliomas, diffuse astrocytomas (IDH mutant, 1p19q negative tumors), and pre-glioblastomas (IDH wild type, 1p19q negative tumors). Resection margins were checked using controls contrast -enhanced cranial MRI at the postoperative 24 and72 hours.RESULTS: Our observations indicate that fluorescein primarily stains diffuse astrocytomas (IDH mutant, 1p19q negative tumors) and pre-glioblastomas (IDH wild type, 1p19q negative tumors) rather than WHO Grade 2 oligodendrogliomas.CONCLUSION: Fluorescein staining might be an option to determine tumor borders in WHO Grade 2 glial tumors, particularly for those with a higher malignancy potential
