The purpose of this paper is to interpretation of a textbook titled “Another Edition of Home Economics”, which was written in 1990 by Utako Shimoda of our university founder to systematize and describe the contents more scientifically than the previous version after visiting Europe. This textbook has two-volumes and it has 16 chapters in total; for example, household economics, food science, clothes, aged person’s life, and rules of decorum, etc. We try to interpret the original article in the authentic way and the main findings are as follows; 1) The fortune of household will be accumulated by cutting down on an unnecessary expenditure, keeping track of their family budget in detail, and being well-organized their home. 2) The most important thing for housewives is to consider the good health of family members, and to arrange food which has rich nutrients and easy to digest. 3) In the chapter of clothes, the author explains first the purpose of wear, to adapt natural and social circumstances in changing Meiji era. Sections describe clothing materials, choosing dress, sewing daily wear, clothes preservation, and formal dress. 4) Hoping for a healthy life for aged person, considerations about a daily life, such as living, mobility and care related to clothing, food and housing are described in a fairly practical way. It gives us a new perspective and possibility of today’s longevity aged society in Japan. 5) The author advices 3 desired manner for developing and keeping in good human relationship; respecting typical form, considering of the others and classical and colloquial mind.departmental bulletin pape

Transbilayer Phospholipid Flipping Regulates Cdc42p Signaling during Polarized Cell Growth via Rga GTPase-Activating Proteins

An important problem in polarized morphogenesis is how polarized transport of membrane vesicles is spatiotemporally regulated. Here, we report that a local change in the transbilayer phospholipid distribution of the plasma membrane regulates the axis of polarized growth. Type 4 P-type ATPases Lem3p-Dnf1p and -Dnf2p are putative heteromeric phospholipid flippases in budding yeast that are localized to polarized sites on the plasma membrane. The lem3Δ mutant exhibits prolonged apical growth due to a defect in the switch to isotropic bud growth. In lem3Δ cells, the small GTPase Cdc42p remains polarized at the bud tip where phosphatidylethanolamine remains exposed on the outer leaflet. Intriguingly, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylserine stimulate GTPase-activating protein (GAP) activity of Rga1p and Rga2p toward Cdc42p, whereas PI(4,5)P2 inhibits it. We propose that a redistribution of phospholipids to the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane triggers the dispersal of Cdc42p from the apical growth site, through activation of GAPs

Validity of the Intake of Sugars, Amino Acids, and Fatty Acids Estimated Using a Self-administered Food Frequency Questionnaire in Middle-aged and Elderly Japanese: The Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study for the Next Generation (JPHC-NEXT) Protocol Area

Background: The Japanese database of food composition was revised in 2020, during which both the number of food items and the number of food items measured for sugars, amino acids, and fatty acids were increased. We evaluated the validity of estimated intakes of sugars, amino acids and fatty acids using a long food frequency questionnaire (long-FFQ) among middle-aged and elderly Japanese. Methods: From 2012 to 2013, 240 men and women aged 40–74 years from five areas in the JPHC-NEXT protocol were asked to respond to the long-FFQ and provide a 12-day weighed food record (WFR) as reference. The long-FFQ, which included 172 food and beverage items and 11 seasonings, was compared with a 3-day WFR, completed during each distinct season, and validity was assessed using Spearman’s correlation coefficients. Results: Percentage differences based on the long-FFQ with the 12-day WFR in men and women varied from −84.4% to 419.6%, and from −75.8% to 623.1% for sugars, −17.5% to 3.8% and −5.8% to 19.6% for amino acids, and −58.5% to 78.8% and −43.4% to 129.3% for fatty acids, respectively. Median values of correlation coefficients for the long-FFQ in men and women were 0.52 and 0.42 for sugars, 0.38 and 0.37 for amino acids, and 0.42 and 0.42 for fatty acids, respectively. Conclusion: The long-FFQ provided reasonable validity in estimating the intakes of sugars, amino acids, and fatty acids in middle-aged and elderly Japanese. Although caution is warranted for some nutrients, these results may be used in future epidemiological studies

Validation of Dietary Intake Estimated by Web-Based Dietary Assessment Methods and Usability Using Dietary Records or 24-h Dietary Recalls: A Scoping Review

The goal was to summarize studies comparing the accuracy of web-based dietary assessments with those of conventional face-to-face or paper-based assessments using 24-h dietary recall or dietary record methods in the general population. Using two databases, mean differences and correlation coefficients (CCs) for intakes of energy, macronutrients, sodium, vegetables, and fruits were extracted from each study independently by the authors. We also collected information regarding usability from articles reporting this. From 17 articles included in this review, the mean dietary intake differences in the web-based dietary assessment compared to conventional methods, were −11.5–16.1% for energy, −12.1–14.9% for protein, −16.7–17.6% for fat, −10.8–8.0% for carbohydrates, −11.2–9.6% for sodium, −27.4–3.9% for vegetables, and −5.1–47.6% for fruits. The CC was 0.17–0.88 for energy, protein, fat, carbohydrates, and sodium, and 0.23–0.85 for vegetables and fruits. In three out of four studies reporting usability, more than half of the participants preferred the web-based dietary assessment. In conclusion, % difference and CC of dietary intake were acceptable in both web-based dietary records and 24-h dietary recalls. The findings from this review highlight the possibility of wide-spread application of the web-based dietary assessment in the future
