    The Williams-Hunt collection aerial photographs and cultural landscapes in Malaysia and Southeast Asia

    Cultural and academic links between SOAS and the Institute of the Malay World and Civilization (ATMA), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) include academic and cultural exchange. The Williams-Hunt Collection (SOAS) of aerial photographs adds an archival dimension stemming from the life and work of Peter Williams-Hunt (1919-1953). Williams-Hunt is best known for his role as Advisor to the Aborigines in Malaysia shortly after World War II. During this period, he wrote several seminal articles on the Orang Asli. He was also a trained aerial photographic interpreter and collected more than 5000 aerial photographs of Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and miscellaneous areas of Vietnam during his postings to Southeast Asia during the war. The author had new copies made of the old photographs and compiled them into a database as part of her doctoral work in the 1980s. At present, thanks to collaboration with Surat Lertlum in Thailand, many parts of the aerial archive are now available online. The article summarizes aspects of the Williams- Hunt Collection and discusses the unique contribution made by Williams-Hunt to archaeology, anthropology and museum collections. His work on ancient settlements pioneered the analysis of the archaeological landscape and his anthropological study was the first to document the changing pattern of the landscape of the many different groups cultivating the forested regions of peninsular Malaysia

    An analysis of Profitability and Resource Use Efficiency of Poultry Feed Mills in Bangladesh

    The study examines the profitability and resource use efficiency analysis of poultry feed mills of Bangladesh covering Dhaka, Gazipur, Narsingdi, Kishoreganj and Mymensingh districts. Thirty feed mills which categorized as; high, medium and low quality on the basis of feed conversion ratio (FCR), were purposively selected. The primary and secondary data were collected and analyse on Cobb-Douglas model. Four out of six variables included in the model were explainied significantly. The feed production cost was estimated Tk. 39295, Tk. 38643 and Tk. 37218 per metric tonne (MT) respectively. The cost of high quality feed was more than medium and low quality feed and the gross return was Tk. 43160, Tk. 42330 and Tk. 40500 per MT respectively. It indicates that high quality feed production was more profitable than the medium and low feed production. The results of Cobb-Douglas model indicated that if the supply of quality of raw materials increased, their efficiency would increase for low and medium. It was also found that the ratio of MVP and MFC were less than one which indicated that the resources were over utilized for high quality feed mills and three input out of six underutilized for medium and low quality feeds.     Mapping the integrated marketing communications research: A bibliometric analysis

    Given the growing popularity of integrated marketing communications (IMC) among academicians and businessmen, this study examines the trends of theoretical development in IMC during 1991-2020 by using a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of 303 academic research papers. In addition to examining the citation and publication structures in terms of authors, institutions, countries, and sources, this study explores the publications and citations trends and identifies conceptual and intellectual structure of IMC literature. The results demonstrate that IMC literature follows a steady but slow growth rate, although average citations per document are high. Kitchen, PJ. (author), Northwestern University (institution), USA (country), and Journal of Marketing Communications (source) contributed the most to IMC literature. With 216 multi-authored documents, IMC can be recognized as a field of high research collaboration. About 84% of the keywords appeared only once in IMC literature. In addition, the foundation of IMC rests on a small number of articles by a few researchers published in handful number of journals. Finally, the keyword co-occurrence network analysis identifies different clusters of IMC research, of which clusters marked with the keywords (1) brand equity, (2) measurement, (3) IMC and consumer empowerment represent the highest research potential

    Study on the tribological characteristics of plant oil-based bio-lubricant with automotive liner-piston ring materials

    The development of bio-lubricant is an immerging area of research considering the rapid depletion of petroleum reserve and environmental concern. This study aims to develop non-edible jatropha oil-based bio-lubricant and investigate the tribological properties considering commonly used piston ring-cylinder liner materials of stainless steel and cast iron due to their interaction under lubricated conditions in an internal combustion engine. The bio-lubricant was prepared by blending different percentages of vegetable oil with commercial lubricants. The tribological test was carried out using a Reo-Bicerihigh-frequency reciprocating rig (HFRR) for the duration of 6 ​h under standard operating conditions. Different properties of bio-lubricants were measured before and after the HFRR test using various analytical instruments. The morphology of the worn material surfaces was examined via Hitachi S-4700 FE-SEM cold field emission high resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The result showed that addition of vegetable oil lubricant up to 7.5% concentration can be compared with commercial lubricant in case of wear rate and coefficient of wear as weight loss reduced significantly. Minimum change in viscosity was observed at the addition of 7.5% bio-lubricant. Surface morphology analysis confirmed less damage of metal surface when tribological analysis were performed at mixed lubricated condition. © 2022 The Author

    Capacitor voltage balancing with Reduction of Arm current and THD control of MMC: A modified triangular injection approach.

    For high power applications, in recent time, multilevel converter has become popular because of the composition of a number of DC sources. In both variable and controllable frequency system, stair voltage output waveform of this type of converter is controllable. Different types of DC sources like as batteries, fuel cells, solar cell, wind and micro turbines are used in Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) topology has been popular in the distributed energy resources area. Harmonic profile of a converter with a modulation scheme much depends on the carrier frequency used in it. On the other hand, with the control of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), the arm current control is also the necessity to drive an MMC in smooth operation. Imbalance of the SM capacitor voltage affect the arm current as well as the life time of the capacitor. In this way the overall performance of the converter could be affected. As a result, several efforts of research in this area focuses on to minimize THD, to balance the capacitor voltage of Sub-module (SM) and to control the arm current of the converter. This paper proposed a modified triangular injection modulation structure for MMC converters to maintains minimum harmonic profile as well as to achieve lower arm current and capacitor voltage balancing of SM within a single algorithm structure. Some well-known modulation methods are compared with proposed method so that percentage of THD and arm current can be identified as minimum and quality of the output voltage is better

    Effect of first and second generation biodiesel blends on engine performance and emission

This study experimentally investigated the effect of blend percentage on diesel engine performance and emission using first generation (soybean) and second generation (waste cooking) biodiesel. The characterization of the biodiesel was done according to ASTM and EN standards and compared with ultralow sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel. A multi-cylinder test bed engine coupled with electromagnetic dynamometer and 5 gas analyzer were used for engine performance and emission test. The investigation was made using B5, B10 and B15 blends for both biodiesels. The study found that brake power (BP) and brake torque (BT) slightly decreases and brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) slightly increases with an increase in biodiesel blends ratio. Besides, a significant reduction in exhaust emissions (except NOx emission) was found for both biodiesels compared to ULSD. Soybean biodiesel showed better engine performance and emissions reduction compared with waste cooking biodiesel. However, NOx emission for B5 waste cooking biodiesel was lower than soybean biodiesel

    Clinical significance of the heterogeneous anthropometry-based case definitions of severe acute malnutrition in children : results of the multi-centric OptiDiag study and policy implications

    Introduction: While both WHZ<-3SD and MUAC<115mm are recommended by WHO as independent criteria to identify children suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) and to refer them to treatment, using MUAC as a sole indicator to identify SAM children is becoming increasingly popular. Indeed, some long-standing, yet controversial, expert statements articulate that SAM children with a low MUAC are most at risk, and that adding WHZ to screening or treatment protocols would present no benefit for detecting mortality risk. Objective: In order to elucidate this, the OptiDiag study aimed to describe the nutritional status and morbi-mortality risks associated with the different case definitions of SAM. Methods: We conducted a multi-centric cohort study in uncomplicated SAM children with low MUAC alone, low WHZ alone, and the combination of low MUAC and low WHZ, in Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, and Liberia. Alongside routine anthropometric measurements, we collected a range of indicators of clinical and nutritional status, among which some novel biomarkers of body metabolism and mortality risk, such as serum leptin. Indeed, hypoleptinemia has recently emerged as a powerful risk factor for acute mortality in children with SAM. Results: The 3 groups included patients with low MUAC only (n =161), low WHZ only (n =138), and both low MUAC & low WHZ (n =152). At diagnosis, leptin levels were lower in patients with reduced WHZ (308.8±28.8 pg/mL, p=0.019) and with both low MUAC & low WHZ (244.9±17.4 pg/mL, p<0.0001) than in children with low MUAC alone (414.0±27.7 pg/mL). These observations were consistent with a range of other clinically significant indicators, like urine ketonuria, visible signs of severe wasting, and maternal report.
