In this art study report, the colourful world of Sevim Burak, one of the notable figures of the Republican Period of Turkish Literature between 1950-1970 with her individual stories with social background and innovative art perspective, has been mirrored, and the play “İşte Baş İşte Gövde İşte Kanatlar” was chosen for the stage application. The way we draw on ourselves through this study has been to follow the apparent manifestations of the concept "other" and the culturalization of subject in Burak's implicit narration. The unheard voices of the excluded, alienated characters in Burak`s texts are become visible and felt in her works by breaking and fracturing of the language. Burak, who has produced such works in which fact cannot be distinguished from dream, time and space are obscured, and future and past are intertwined, criticizes the order in which she lives and represents the "other" through her works. Considering the characteristics of Burak's art in all this essence and form, we can say that understanding the language created by the author with a free flow of consciousness is only possible through analysing the cultural metaphors she uses in her plays and evaluating all of her works together which are reflections of her own life. Throughout the course of our study, we aimed to bring the ignored voice of the “other” out into the open through the author's extraordinary language and to reflect this visibility into our performance. We have tried to analyse the author` s world which does not reveal itself easily, working on the play “İşte Baş İşte Gövde İşte Kanatlar”, which is the focus of our art study report, both theoretically and practically. The psychoanalytic approach that we have adopted as a starting point in this way has helped us to find our way through every time we are lost and supported our creativity in terms of both essence and form.

AhBuNe Agent: Winner of the Eleventh International Automated Negotiating Agent Competition (ANAC 2020)

    No full text
The International Automated Negotiating Agent Competition introduces a new challenge each year to facilitate the research on agent-based negotiation and provide a test benchmark. ANAC 2020 addressed the problem of designing effective agents that do not know their users’ complete preferences in addition to their opponent’s negotiation strategy. Accordingly, this paper presents the negotiation strategy of the winner agent called “AhBuNe Agent”. The proposed heuristic-based bidding strategy checks whether it has sufficient orderings to reason about its complete preferences and accordingly decides whether to sacrifice some utility in return for preference elicitation. While making an offer, it uses the most-desired known outcome as a reference and modifies the content of the bid by adopting a concession-based strategy. By analyzing the content of the given ordered bids, the importance ranking of the issues is estimated. As our agent adopts a fixed time-based concession strategy and takes the estimated issue importance ranks into account, it determines to what extent the issues are to be modified. The evaluation results of the ANAC 2020 show that our agent beats the other participating agents in terms of the received individual score.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work publicInteractive Intelligenc

Narrative and reader in flash fictions of Sevim Burak, Ferit Edgü, and Murathan Mungan

Sevim Burak'ın Afrika Dansı ve Palyaço Ruşen'i; Edgü'nün Binbir Hece, Doğu Öyküleri, İşte Deniz, Maria, Do Sesi, Avara Kasnak, Nijinski Öyküleri ve Yolun Gittiği Yer adlı kitapları; Murathan Mungan'ın Kibrit Çöpleri türün özelliklerini yansıtan dikkate değer öykülerden oluşmaktadır. Flash fiction, also known as short short story, which meets Turkish readers' horizon of expectation from the 1980s onward, exists as an independent sub-genre in contemporary Turkish literature. Sevim Burak and Ferit Edgü have been accepted as the pioneering writers of the genre while Murathan Mungan has brought a new voice to it through his distinctive style. Sevim Burak's Afrika Dansı (African Dance) and Palyaço Ruşen (Ruşen, the Clown); Edgü's Binbir Hece (A Thousand and One Syllables), Doğu Öyküleri (East Stories), İşte Deniz, Maria (Here, the Sea, Maria), Do Sesi (The C Sound), Avara Kasnak (Idler), Nijinski Öyküleri (Stories of Nijinski) and Yolun Gittiği Yer (Where the Road is Headed); Murathan Mungan's Kibrit Çöpleri (Matchsticks) consist of remarkable pieces that reflect the characteristics of the genre. Although flash fiction research in Turkish literature refers amply to those works, one can observe that they are understudied in terms of theory and textual analysis. The main hypothesis of this study is that for a holistic interpretation of flash fiction it is necessary to consider the artistic and the aesthetic poles together. Within this scope, the thesis first reviews the theoretical discussions on flash fiction and argues the necessity of appealing to both textual analysis and reader's response. Secondly, in order to distinguish the roles of the narrator and the reader, it analyzes all of the stories in the aforementioned books according to the methods of structuralism and reception aesthetics. The structuralist reading has revealed the typology of the narrator and shed light on the narrative gaps. Then, the role of the reader, integrated into the narrative by the author through these gaps, has been evaluated on the axis of reception aesthetics. In conclusion, it is understood that neither the author's intention nor the voice of the text nor the arbitrary interpretation of the reader is single-handedly sufficient to interpret the stories of Burak, Edgü, and Mungan. Thus, it was determined that the meaning of a flash fiction can only be comprehended within the author-text-reader triangle

Öztürk, Burak (Bilecik, Author)Fitting products of different dimensions and design geometries are used in natural gas pipelines, water supply systems, fire installations, machinery equipment and in the aviation and automotive industries. This study aims to investigate the machinability of Al 6061-T6 fittings, which are widely used in the aerospace and automotive industries. In an endeavor to produce reliable and healthy installation systems, Al 6061 material was reinforced with 10 % copper and 316L stainless steel powder in order to increase its corrosion resistance and improve its mechanical properties for sustainable production. These new materials were threaded using a 1/2 BSP (British Standard Pipe) tap tool via the Taguchi L-9 method. Different materials, heat treatments and spindle speeds were used during this manufacturing process. The effects of these manufacturing parameters on the total power dissipated P-total were calculated using variance analysis (ANOVA). According to these results, the most effective parameter was the heat treatment type (44.9 %), followed by the material type (30.6 %) and the rpm (19.9 %). It was observed that these aluminum materials can be threaded using 30 to 40 % lower energy consumption compared to cast iron. In addition, the aluminum alloy fitting materials achieved higher hardness than the cast iron fittings.Bilecik Şeyh Edebali Üniversitesi Bilimsel Araştırma Projesi - BAP - 2018-02.BSEU.03-07. The Use of Literary Metamorphosis in Clarice Lispector and Sevim Burak

    No full text
This essay discusses two texts by two literary avant-garde women writers in terms of their use of literary metamorphosis. Although coming from different geographical, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds, interestingly, Turkish author Sevim Burak (1931-1983) and Brazilian author Clarice Lispector (1920-1977) share a common interest in their tendency towards the modernist aesthetic geared towards an experimental literary style. This essay aims to bring Lispector's experimental novel The Passion According to G.H. (A Paixao Segundo G.H.; 1964) and Burak's short story "The Window" ("Pencere"), from her short story collection titled Burnt Palaces (Yanik Saraylar; 1965), together in light of their use of the metamorphosis trope. Both texts challenge desire in fixed signification and closed interpretation, calling instead for a decentered and displaced hermeneutics. In this study, I discuss the use of metamorphosis as a literary trope in The Passion and "The Window" as their major literary tool in the deconstruction of subjectivity in different ways. The study argues that the trope of literary metamorphosis can also be an effective narrative vehicle for opening oneself to different forms and positions of alterity, be it ontological or epistemological alterity
