Reinforcement and restoration studies of the Edremit Ataturk House

    Get PDF
Edremit Ataturk House has been restored under the international restoration principles. Due to its importance, a systematic study was carried out to prevent the building from suffering damage. The current situation of the building was investigated by using slightly destructive and non-destructive test methods. Flat-jack and shear tests were used in order to identify the mechanical properties of masonry walls according to the ASTM standards. The operational modal analysis test method was used in order to understand its dynamic characteristics. After the diagnosis phase, a finite element model was prepared and calibrated according to the in-situ test results. The reinforcement studies were performed according to the finite element modal analysis results. Finally, the differences between the dynamic properties of the structure were evaluated by vibration tests before and after the restoration works.Edremit Atatürk Ev

From the land of the rising sun to the nation of the crescent moon: a visit to Turkey by a Japanese training fleet

In this study, we analyse a visit by two Japanese cruisers (the Izumo and Yakumo), commanded by Admiral Yamamoto, to Turkey in 1926. Although the visit's aim was overstated at the time, its contribution to Turkish-Japanese relations cannot be disregarded. Ambassador Obata and Admiral Yamamoto's emphasis on and discourse in relation to Turkish-Japanese friendship demonstrate that the Japanese imposed different meanings on the trip, the most important part of which was to Istanbul, where visits to official departments, programmes for naval students and familiarizing Istanbulites with Japan were important activities. The Istanbul press published news about the Japanese guests and their daily activities. After Istanbul, the delegation went to Ankara for official visits. However, these visits were little reported in Turkish news columns or the press of the period. In fact, the visit is reflected in just one or two sentences in the pages of history

The Use of Authentic Material and Construction Techniques in Historical Conservation: Orhaneli Stone School as a Case

    No full text
Most of the technological materials used in the building constructions have negative affects to ecological balance and human-nature-environment interactions. Being able to hand down today’s resources to next generations is of great importance in terms of sustainability. For this reason, during construction, it is necessary to reduce costs of use, make use of natural, local, low maintenance, recyclable and eco-friendly building materials, create healthy, comfortable and livable environments and develop strategies intended for the protection of ecosystem. In this article, the applications made during the restoration of the structure of Bursa Orhaneli Stone School will be examined in terms of sustainability, authentic materials and construction techniques. Exterior walls constructed by using masonry system and interior walls made by using the cob-filled timber structure system, timber trusses for roof system will be dealt with in detail and its construction stages will be explained. The characteristics of the cob material, mud plaster applications made on laths, fire-resistant for materials and the other application details will be shown. Moreover, suggestions will be proposed regarding the use, regular maintenance and repair following the restoration of the building and how to keep and hand down it to next generations with confidence

Evaluation of material characteristics and structural dynamic properties of a historical church: The case of 19th century Bursa Derekoy church (Ayia Paraskevi)

    No full text
Derekoy (Ayia Paraskevi) Church, built by the Orthodox Greeks in Bursa, is one of the prominent monuments built in the 19th century. The structure, which lost its community with the population exchange (1923) between Turkey and Greece, has since then been out of service and a rapid deterioration process has begun. Analysis works are frequently implemented for this purpose and become crucial in Turkey, of which a large part is within the earthquake zone. However, the majority of the studies on the preservation of historical buildings are lacking in detailed material analysis and numerical methods. Conducting a series of material tests and numerical analyses for the structure provides more reliable and qualified interventions since they influence the decisions on the reinforcement and protection methods employed for historical buildings. For this purpose, the material characterizations of the mortar, plaster and stones used in the church were carried out by performing physical, chemical, mechanical, petrographic and mineralogical tests on samples taken from the church. Afterwards, mechanical tests of the walls and vibration tests were conducted to determine the dynamic behavior of the building. Based on the results obtained from the analyses, a series of intervention methods were proposed. It is understood that the flat -jack, shear and vibration tests are vital for determining the real structural behavior of the building. Furthermore, it is recommended that vibration tests are carried out on both the overall structure and individual walls to determine the dynamic behavior of similar structures where only outer walls remain standing

Linear/nonlinear dynamic analysis and prediction of failure mechanism of irgandi bridge

    No full text
The goal of this study is to investigate the behavior and failure mechanism of historical Irgandi Bridge located in Bursa City under earthquake loads by using linear and nonlinear dynamic analysis. Dynamic characteristics of the bridge is investigated by using in-situ Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) tests. The finite element model is updated according to the OMA tests. Three different artificial earthquake records from weak to very strong are applied to the model for understanding the damage zones and the failure mechanism of the historical bridge. The results show that the bridge does not reach the failure mechanism under weak earthquakes for nonlinear dynamic analysis. However, under strong earthquake even if damage zones are occurred and the stiffness of the bridge is decreased, there is no failure mechanism observed according to the nonlinear dynamic analyses. Under very strong earthquake loads the bridge reaches the failure mechanism according to the nonlinear dynamic analysis. As the earthquake level increases, the difference between linear and nonlinear dynamic analysis results increases due to structural damages. In addition, considering the soil-structure interactions, it is concluded that the dynamic characteristics could be reflected more accurately

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
