Do Indonesian Islamic Microfinance Institutions Need Lender of the Last Resort?
Liquidity risk is one of significant risk managed by financial intermediaries including Islamic Microfinance Institutions (IMFIs). The financial intermediaries accept short-term deposits and disburse these deposits in the form of long-term loans. This situation makes IMFI desperately need a lender of last resort (LOLR). Nevertheless, there has been no formal LOLR for Indonesian IMFIs. This study intends to construct the LOLR model for IMFI in Indonesia. This qualitative study applies a case study analysis. This study's subjects are IMFIs in East Java Province that was selected purposively with thirty managers as the key informants. Research findings show that the best model of LOLR is developing a secondary cooperative since the majority form of IMFIs in Indonesia are cooperative entities. With all members of a secondary cooperative deposit for reserve requirements, they can place excess liquidity in the secondary cooperative and ask for financial support
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Constraints and strategies for municipal Sukuk issuance in Indonesia
Purpose – This study aims to examine the constraints in the issuance of municipal Sukuk in Indonesia and proposed potential solutions and strategies to support its implementation. Design/methodology/approach – This study used the analytic network process (ANP) method with four groups of relevant respondents that comprised representatives from the local government, universities (academicians), experts (practitioners) and regulators. Findings – Four elements support municipal Sukuk issuance: issuer (regional government or municipality), investor, market and infrastructure. The element with the highest score was the lack of commitment from the regional government in issuing municipal sukuk due to leadership change that occurs every five years. Thus, specific regulations that strengthen and regulate municipal Sukuk issuance and the support from the central government are the priority solutions and strategies that should be undertaken to encourage regional governments in issuing municipal Sukuk. Practical implications – The establishment of specific regulations by the central government that support and strengthen municipal Sukuk issuance is necessary to promote successful implementation. Supports from the central government include tax incentives, accessible licensing processes and bureaucracy aids. Originality/value – This study extended the literature by examining problems, solutions and strategies for municipal Sukuk issuance in terms of four aspects: the issuer (municipal government), investors, markets and infrastructure. The multiple aspect analyses provided a broader understanding of the lack of municipal Sukuk issuance in Indonesi
The influence of institutional quality, economic freedom, and technological development on Islamic financial development in OIC countries
This study investigates the relationship between Institutional quality, Economic freedom, technological advancement, and Islamic financial development in selected OIC countries. This study employs the panel estimation method to examine annual data pertaining to Islamic bank industries across 22 countries, sourced from the SESRIC database, from 2013 to 2021. The findings show that the overall quality of institutions and economic freedom influence Islamic finance development. Further, the contribution of technological development appears when institutional quality indicates higher performance. Despite the predominant correlation observed among institutional indicators, this study, focusing on a comprehensive index, reveals a consistent and significant contribution of institutional quality to the growth of Islamic finance. Furthermore, this study's findings show that institutional quality and economic freedom are related; yet, the methods by which the foundations of each indicator influence financial development differ. The findings of this research underscore the importance of urging policymakers, particularly governmental authorities, to prioritize the development of policies and initiatives aimed at fostering a healthy and conducive environment. Emphasizing practical and transparent institutional frameworks is essential for cultivating a well-regulated economic environment
Analyzing the impact of productive zakat on the welfare of zakat recipient
Purpose – This study aims to investigate the effects of zakat and business assistance on the growth and
well-being of mustahiqs (zakat recipients). This study also investigates the impact of macroeconomic
variables on the welfare of mutahiqs.
Design/methodology/approach – The partial least squares-structural equation modelling method is
used in this quantitative study, examining data from 137 mustahiqs. The data was collected from seven zakat
institutions, which run effective zakat programmes to empower mustahiqs.
Findings – Zakat empowerment programmes and business assistantships positively impact the growth of
mustahiqs’ businesses, beneficial to their well-being. Nevertheless, their well-being is unaffected by the proxy
of the macroeconomy.
Originality/value – This study adds to the zakat literature by identifying the relationship between zakat,
business growth, macroeconomic conditions and mustahiq welfare. Accordingly, this approach was made by
combining primary and secondary data. This research offers a unique measure of welfare based on the
concept of the Islamic objectives (Maqasid al-Shariah)
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

An Empirical Analysis Macroeconomics On Islamic Mutual Funds In Indonesia
Macroeconomic factors are indicators to be considered by fund managers and investors before allocating funds for investment. The study aims to discover a causal relationship and test for long-term relationship between macroeconomic variables consisting of inflation, interest rate and currency exchange rate against Islamic mutual funds. The research used secondary monthly data related to macroeconomic variables and Islamic mutual funds during 2011-2016. This study uses a quantitative approach with a model of Vector Auto Regression (VAR). The empirical results show that there are no long-term relationship between the variables of inflation, interest rates, and exchange rate against Islamic mutual fund. Granger causality test shows that the three variables of inflation, interest rates, and exchange rates has no causal relationship, but there are two one-way relationships, which include the interest rate and Islamic mutual funds, and Islamic mutual funds and the exchange rate
