Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Standards of Collective Economic Justice of Prophet Muhammd (PBUH)

    Get PDF
This research article explores the standards of collective economic justice promoted by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Collective Economic Justice refers to the fair distribution of resources and opportunities within a community, ensuring that all members have access to basic necessities and economic well-being.  The economic principles and guidelines set forth by Prophet Muhammad provide a comprehensive framework for promotion fairness, equity, and social welfare within a community. By investigating into the teachings of Islam, this research article aims to shed light on the Prophet's vision for economic justice and its implications for contemporary society. The Prophet highlighted the importance of charity, known as "Zakat” & “Sadqa” which involves giving a portion of one's wealth to poor. “Zakat” is obligatory for Muslims. Another key aspect of Collective Economic Justice in the Prophet's teachings is the prohibition of usury, or "riba”. The Prophet encouraged collaboration in economic activities, fostering a sense of unity and shared responsibility. This cooperative approach aimed to uplift the entire community & reduce economic inequalities. The research also explores the Prophet's stance on ethical business practices, emphasizing honesty, transparency, fairness & prohibition of fraudulent activities. The principles of Zakat, prohibition of usury, economic cooperation, and ethical business practices serve as guiding beacons for building an economically just and compassionate society. Understanding and implementing these teachings can contribute to the establishment of equitable economic systems that prioritize the welfare of all members within a community. koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

ABSTRACTExtremism is a wrong & inflexible behavior of an individual or nation. Leaving the path of moderation is also extremism. Extremists do not have the strength to tolerate opposing thinking, ideology & belief. People with such thoughts just want to convince their own ideas. Due to extremism, ethnicism, sectarianism & racism, there are so many problems in this world. Due to extremism, this world has been destroyed many times. In twentieth & twenty-first centuries, because of extremist ideologies of communism, capitalism & fascism, the peace & order of the whole world is in ruins. Extremism grows in different areas for different reasons. One reason is the lack of proper justice system. When the influential criminals of the society do not get caught by the law & they escape from the clutches of the law by using various tactics, extremism arises in society. Other reasons include ignorance or lack of education, social exploitation, poverty, hunger & lack of interfaith harmony, corruption & social injustice. The only solution to extremism, ethnicism, sectarianism & racism is to promote Islamic teachings. Islamic teachings include equality of human being & brotherhood, interfaith harmony, giving equal status to all prophets, gentleness & tolerance. It is fact that if extremism can be eradicated from this world, then this world can become like paradise

ABSTRACT: Generally, people from non-Muslim countries who claim expertise in the Middle East, Islam and Oriental studies are called Orientalists. There are basically two types of them: One is those who have a very hateful attitude towards the religion of Islam and through their writings and speeches criticize the religion of Islam, Quran, Hadith, Fiqh, Seerat Tayyaba ﷺ and Islamic history.  Most of the Orientalists have a long list of hateful attitude towards Islam and their aim is just to criticize for the sake of criticism and to discourage the people of non-Muslim countries from accepting Islam. Compared to the biased Orientalists, there are some Orientalists who follow the path of moderation and do not criticize unjustly. They make some mistakes in their writing and speech, but generally their attitude is moderate.  Some of the orientalists who hate the religion of Islam or the moderate orientalists are inspired by Islamic teachings and accept Islam. In this research article, a brief introduction of some selected, moderate & those Orientalists who accepted Islam in 21st century has been presented. Also, the increasing rate of acceptance of Islam in the Western world due to the research works of Muslim scholars and translations of the Holy Quran, Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ, Fiqh and History of Islam in Western languages at the beginning of the 21st century has also been examined.
