Exploring the potential of fermented papaya as a functional ingredient for sourdough bread: a study on fermentation time and quality of sourdough donuts

    No full text
Sourdough bread is known to have health benefits due to its fermentation process using lactic acid and wild yeast. It can improve the taste, texture, shelf life, and nutritional content of bread as a functional food. In this study, sourdough was made from fermented papaya with varying fermentation times of 4, 5, and 6 days. The substrate was fed five times to strengthen the sourdough, resulting in a robust enough mixture to develop the dough. The resulting sourdough was used to create sourdough bread with a 30% sourdough concentration. The fermentation time impacted the quality of the sourdough, with results showing that sourdough became increasingly active as fermentation time progressed. The best sourdough was obtained from a six-day fermentation period, with a pH of 3.60 and a total plate count of 1.70 × 104 CFU/ml. The best donuts were produced using the sourdough that had been fermented for six days, with an almost perfect score of 3.9 out of 4 for all aspects, including color, aroma, taste, and texture. Using this sourdough resulted in a significantly longer shelf life; no mold appeared until the eighth day of storage at room temperature. The moisture content of the donuts was measured at 4.57%. This study demonstrates the potential benefits of using sourdough made from fermented papaya to improve the quality and shelf life of sourdough bread while also providing potential health benefits

The business model canvas is an excellent tool for understanding a company model in a systematic and plain manner. This canvas will help us learn more about the clients we will be serving, what value propositions are available through which channels, and how we make money. We may also use the business model canvas for a better understand our own or a competitor's business model. Alexander Osterwalder of Strategyzer invented the Business Model Canvas. The business model canvas is a tool for describing, visualising, evaluating, and updating business models. Customer segments, value propositions, channels, customer relationship, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, key partner, and cost structure are the nine blockchains of BMC. The company must determine each of the business model canvas’s, which are the nine blocks. The justification for how a company develops, delivers, and collects value is describe by the BMC. We will always know what our business model is because of BMC. It also reveals which tasks are less vital or even detrimental to the goal's achievement. We can further develop our business model because the BMC sharpens the view of the essentials. The BMC is ideal for allowing our thoughts to flow freely. The BMC is an excellent foundation on which to build our ideas. We can also try out different company models and see what fresh combinations we can come up. BMC transforms a business concept into a well-structured document. Others will be able to comprehend and discuss our business strategy more quickly because of this. The BMC provides a comprehensive overview of the company concept. Controlling, the strategy department, or management, for example, receives precisely the information that is important to them in a timely manner

Channa micropeltes or toman is a native freshwater fish species and not commercially species in Malaysia. The fish become one of the anglers’ attractions to Kenyir Lake, especially for recreational fishing purpose. However, parasitic diseases are one of the most common problems for this fish population. Studies on parasites of C. micropeltes is essential to our knowledge for the maintenance of natural resources. So, the objectives of this study were to identify the cestode and observe the histopathological changes on gastrointestinal tract of infected C. micropeltes. About 15 C. micropeltes were caught by using fishing rod. The fish were pithing, dissected and gastrointestinal tract was removed, then placed on petri dish. The stomach and intestine were fixed in 10% buffered formalin and proceed for preparing histology slides by using standard method for histology. Then, the tissues were stained by using hematoxylin and eosin (H & E) stain. The tissue changes were described. The cestodes were collected, fixed in 70% ethanol, stained with aceto-carmine and prepared the permanent slide. The cestodes morphology were observed under microscope for identification. In this study, only Senga rostellarae was identified. The histopathological changes showed the intestine with severe villus damage with destruction of villi epithelium and necrosis. Some areas with cross section of cestode showed increase of goblet cells and generated necrosis. Based on this study, S. rostellarae was a dominant species, and its activities caused severe damage to the fish intestine. The conditions can cause death to the fish due to hemorrhage and malabsorption of nutrie

IoT-sustainability protection: water level monitoring with micro leak detection and automatic water restoration

    No full text
Efficient water resource management stands as a linchpin for sustainable development initiatives worldwide. To this end, this work endeavours to pioneer a comprehensive water level monitoring system with a focus on leak detection and automatic water restoration. Tailored with specialized sensors with cutting-edge automation technology to monitor water levels against predefined thresholds, promptly triggering restoration processes when necessary and identifying leaks in real-time. Central idea of the design is the incorporation of a dedicated rain sensor module, bolstering the micro leak detection capabilities while an ultrasonic sensor ensures precise measurement of water levels in tanks. In the event of a detected leak, rain sensor promptly initiates a signal, process by the main board which also known as the “brain” of the system and triggers an automatic cessation of water input to prevent wastage. Moreover, the system ensures seamless data logging by uploading pertinent information to a dedicated IoT cloud database, facilitating comprehensive monitoring and analysis. This innovative solution underscores not only its viability but also its practical efficacy, showcasing its potential to optimize water utilization and conservation efforts. Specifically, it excels in detecting micro droplets indicative of leaks in the tank. This work aims to spearhead the development of an advanced water level monitoring system, leveraging state-of-the-art of Arduino hardware and a diverse array of sensors, including ultrasonic and rain sensors as well as presenting a holistic framework poised to revolutionize water management practices

Resilience underground: understanding earthworm biomass responses to land use changes in the tropics

    No full text
Soil biodiversity, like terrestrial biodiversity, is currently under threat by changes in land use. Intensively managed farming activities with agrochemicals have degraded both soil biodiversity and health. However, little is known about how these changes in land use affect the distribution of earthworm biomass in Southeast Asia. We conducted earthworm sampling across multiple habitats, including lowland forests, exotic monoculture plantations (e.g., oil palm and rubber tree), and agroforestry orchards. To survey earthworm populations, we excavated the top 30 cm of soil at 18 sites encompassing 399 plots distributed across natural and human-modified ecosystems in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, Peninsular Malaysia. We found that earthworm abundance was negatively related to increasing soil compaction, leaf litter weight, soil pH, and undergrowth height, whereas it was positively associated with increasing undergrowth and canopy cover. Our findings demonstrated that agroforestry orchards, rubber tree plantations, and mature oil palm plantations had higher earthworm abundance than those in logged lowland forests. Earthworm abundance in unlogged lowland forests and young oil palm plantations, on the other hand, was lower than in logged lowland forests. Overall earthworm weight was greater in rubber tree plantations, agroforestry orchards, mature oil palm plantations, and unlogged lowland forests than those in logged lowland forests, while young oil palm plantations exhibited lower earthworm weight than logged lowland forests. Our data indicate that increases in soil compaction and leaf litter weight were associated with decreased earthworm weight. These results demonstrate the importance of site-level habitat management for maintaining healthy earthworm populations and soil biodiversity
