An insight into internship program for undergraduate Arabic language learners in Malaysia
This study attempts to investigate the outcome of the internship
training program in the Department of Arabic Language and
Literature, at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).
Methodologically, this study was conducted to gather the
opinions and experience on the internship program among Arabic
language and literature students. The participants were
purposively selected from 57 out of 66 students who have
completed their three months internship program either in the
public or private sector from July to September 2015 by using an
online survey and open-ended questionnaire. General findings
from this study show that internship training has essentially
improved their soft skills and increased their workplace literacy
and well-being. Despite the poor perception of Arabic language in
the mutual graduate employability as well as its practicality
aspects and job market by the industry, Arabic language and
literature students are well accepted in both private and public
sectors to undertake their internship training as reported in this
article. In conclusion, internship training is crucial, particularly
among Arabic language and literature students as it enriches their
experiences, knowledge and skills in both their personal and
social life. It also increased their level of confidence to explore
their future opportunity in the Malaysian job market including
setting up their own businesses through entrepreneurship

Formative Evaluation of an Arabic Online Vocabulary Learning Games Prototype
The use of digital game-based learning is a new trend of instructional practices in different fields of knowledge. The research and studies related to this field are increasingly attracting the researchers all over the world to further explore the various aspects of educational games models, the design and development of games itself, the evaluation insights and many more. This chapter describes an experience of the formative evaluation of an online game among Arabic language learners at the elementary level in the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). The mixed methods of quantitative and qualitative research approaches were utilized to investigate the usability, practicality and effectiveness of this games prototype in the real settings. This chapter also described the process and phases of evaluation throughout the responses from participants which vary from experts in instructional design (ID), subject matter experts (SME), lecturers and learners as the actual users.</jats:p
Analysis, design and development of an online vocabulary game for Arabic elementary learners / Muhammad Sabri Sahrir
This study was aimed at the design and development of an online Arabic vocabulary learning games prototype for pre-university Arabic elementary level learners at the Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS), International Islamic University Malaysia (HUM), Petaling Jaya, Selangor. The design and development of this prototype started with an analysis of three theories relating to the Vocabulary Learning Theory by Nation (2001), Theory of Multimedia Learning by Mayer (2001) and Theory of Digital Game-Based Learning by Prensky (2001). The above mentioned theories have been further complemented with the Front-End Analysis (Richey et al. 2004) to study the problem in learning the Arabic language among students and lecturers, their early perception, learning needs, prior suggestions and comments towards the design and development process of the games prototype. The modified ADDIE model has been chosen as the instructional design (ID) generic model research framework in this study by using research methods and procedures of design and development research (DDR) as suggested by Richey and Klein (2007) in five different phases of analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation. The participants who were purposively sampled comprised 215 learners, 16 lecturers, 14 experts in instructional design (ID), Arabic subject matter expert (SME) and game-based learning (GBL), 2 technical staff from information technology (IT) unit and 2 programmers. The mixed method approach employed techniques such as descriptive quantitative survey, open-ended questionnaires, interviews, think aloud method, content analysis, field notes, class observation and testimonial. The evaluation of the usability, practicality and effectiveness of the games prototype was conducted based on Tessmer's (1993) adapted evaluation framework. It was divided into three main phases of pre-formative evaluation, formative evaluation 1 and formative evaluation 2. This study contributed theoretically in the form of 'design principles' and practically in the design and development of an online Arabic vocabulary learning games prototype. Findings from the evaluation process showed that the Arabic online game scored highly in terms of the learners' perception, concentration and knowledge improvement. The game scored moderately on the aspect of immersion. Analysis of from the qualitative data also indicated participants' agreement on the of usability, practicality and effectiveness of this games prototype. Suggestions and comments from the different participants were synthesized and incorporated with the findings to guide further improvement of the game prototype and to inform future research
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
