A Master of Arts thesis in Translation and Interpreting (English/Arabic/English) by Muhammad Ismail Muhammad Ismail Omar Ghorab entitled, "One Text, Two Receptions: Mahfouz's Children of the Alley," December 2013. Thesis advisor is Dr. Said Faiq. Available are both hard and soft copies of the thesis.Received wisdom in translation studies tells us that both source and target texts should enjoy the same reception by the source and target cultures. However, Mahfouz's Children of the Alley has been negatively received in the East, banned in all Arab countries for alleged blasphemy over its allegorical portrayal of Allah and faiths, but positively received in the West, even the Nobel Committee referred to it when Mahfouz was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1988. Taking Children of the Alley as its case study, the aim of this thesis is to explore the reasons behind different receptions of the same text. The East-West duality is examined to establish why and how reception of this text is different. The thesis examines examples from Mahfouz's original Arabic text as well as its English translation by Peter Theroux. It may be concluded that the English translation of the novel seems to manipulate reception.College of Arts and SciencesDepartment of Arabic and Translation StudiesMaster of Arts in English/Arabic/English Translation and Interpreting (MATI

Is Spiking Secure? A Comparative Study on the Security Vulnerabilities of Spiking and Deep Neural Networks

    Get PDF
Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) claim to present many advantages in terms of biological plausibility and energy efficiency compared to standard Deep Neural Networks (DNNs). Recent works have shown that DNNs are vulnerable to adversarial attacks, i.e., small perturbations added to the input data can lead to targeted or random misclassifications. In this paper, we aim at investigating the key research question: "Are SNNs secure?" Towards this, we perform a comparative study of the security vulnerabilities in SNNs and DNNs w.r.t. the adversarial noise. Afterwards, we propose a novel black-box attack methodology, i.e., without the knowledge of the internal structure of the SNN, which employs a greedy heuristic to automatically generate imperceptible and robust adversarial examples (i.e., attack images) for the given SNN. We perform an in-depth evaluation for a Spiking Deep Belief Network (SDBN) and a DNN having the same number of layers and neurons (to obtain a fair comparison), in order to study the efficiency of our methodology and to understand the differences between SNNs and DNNs w.r.t. the adversarial examples. Our work opens new avenues of research towards the robustness of the SNNs, considering their similarities to the human brain's functionality

Anxiety disorder is a mental health condition that affects millions of people worldwide.Common treatments for anxiety include psychotherapy and medications, such as benzodiazepines and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).However, these treatments have adverse effects and may not be suitable for everyone. As a result, there is a growing interest in exploring natural remedies for anxiety, including those derived from plants.Moringa oleifera, a plant known for its medicinal properties, has recently gained attention for its potential anxiolytic effects. This plant has been traditionally used to treat various ailments, including anxiety. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of understanding on the mechanism of action of M. oleifera in anxiolytic effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the anxiolytic effects and mechanism of action of ethanolic extracts of M. oleifera (MOLE) leaves,by observing behavioural changes in Danio rerio (zebrafish) and analyzing differential gene expression. For 14-day chronic behavior study, zebrafish were grouped into different treatment groups, including a non-stressed untreated group, stressed untreated group, a positive control group treated with fluoxetine and MOLE treatments group. MOLE was administered at three different concentrations (500 mg/L, 1000 mg/L, and 2000 mg/L) in the stressed treatment groups. The anxiolytic effects were evaluated using the novel tank test (NTT) and light-dark test (LDT). After the behaviour study, RNA was extracted from the fishes’ brains for gene expression analysis using a custom RT² Profiler PCR array. 33 compounds were profiled after LCMS-QTOF analysis. LC50 values of MOLE, 1231 mg/L,were deemed save to be used for this research. Meanwhile, behavior study results showed that 1000 mg/L MOLE significantly reduced anxiety levels in the stress-induced zebrafish group compared to the other treatment groups. The fish also exhibited significant changes in the expression of crhb, faah2a, mao, and pah genes; which potentially affected by MOLE compounds such as quercetin and kaempferol. This study suggests that MOLE may serve as a potential new supplement for anxiety treatment, given its anxiolytic effect on the zebrafish model. However, the result of this study would need to be replicated in other animal models and human before it is marketed as treatment for anxiolytic effects

A piperazine (PZ)-promoted methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) solution for a carbon dioxide (CO2) removal process from the flue gas of a large-scale coal power plant has been simulated. An Aspen Plus® was used to perform the simulation process. Initially, the effects of MDEA/PZ concentration ratio and stripper pressure on the regeneration energy of CO2 capture process were investigated. The MDEA/PZ concentration ratio of 35/15 wt.% (35 wt. MDEA and 15 wt.% PZ) was selected as an appropriate concentration. The reboiler duty of 3.235 MJ/kg CO2 was obtained at 35/15 wt.% concentration ratio of MDEA/PZ. It was considered a reference or base case, and process modifications including rich vapor compression (RVC) process, cold solvent split (CSS), and the combination of both processes were investigated to check its effect on the energy requirement. A total equivalent work of 0.7 MJe/kg CO2 in the RVC and a reboiler duty of 2.78 MJ/kg CO2 was achieved in the CSS process. Similarly, the total equivalent work, reboiler duty, and condenser duty of 0.627 MJe/kg CO2, 2.44 MJ/kg CO2, and 0.33 MJ/kg CO2, respectively, were obtained in the combined process. The reboiler duty and the total equivalent work were reduced by about 24.6 and 16.2%, respectively, as compared to the reference case. The total energy cost saving was 1.79 M/yr.Consideringtheadditionalequipmentcostinthecombinedprocess,thetotalcostsavingwas0.67M/yr. Considering the additional equipment cost in the combined process, the total cost saving was 0.67 M per year

    Writing through Translation

A Master of Arts Thesis in Translation and Interpreting (English/Arabic/English) by Ilham A. M. Alghadiri entitled, "Writing Through Translation." Thesis advisor is Dr. Said Faiq and was submitted in May 2012. Available are both hard and soft copies of the thesis. Each culture can represent any other culture. Translation, in this sense becomes a cultural representation of an original. Translation and cultural representation in the West are often seen through the lenses of Orientalism; an ideology suggested by the late Edward Said in 1978, as the dominant approach in the West to the cultural representation of the East and ever since influenced the post-colonial studies. However, little attention is accorded into the orientalist cultural representation inherent in the writings of Arab authors who represent (translate) their own native culture in the language of the former colonizer. In this thesis, Amin Maalouf's historical novel Samarcande, originally written in French and translated into English and Arabic, is examined, and the cultural representation of the medieval Muslims and history through the life of the controversial poet Omar Al Khaiyam are analyzed to identify whether it is resistant or not to the Western master discourse of Orientalism (Faiq, 2004). The author, his works and background, the novel influence and structure were highlighted and a considerable number of selected text samples on the socio-political, historical, and Omar AlKhaiyyam's philosophy depictions were investigated for language, poetics, ideology, and universe of discourse as parts of the methodology adopted in this thesis. The sample translations into Arabic were dealt with in terms of language and poetics. It was concluded that, the novel is another orientalist representation of the Muslim culture that seems to conform to the French literary norms and adopts foreignization as a dominant approach emphasizing exoticism. The source and its translations represent instances of writing through translation.College of Arts and SciencesDepartment of Arabic and Translation StudiesMaster of Arts in English/Arabic/English Translation and Interpreting (MATI
