Maudu’: a way of union with God

No full text
This volume offers a fascinating case study of the Sayyid community of Cikoang in South Sulawesi – in particular, an examination of the role of the descendants of Sayyid Jalaluddin al-‘Aidid, a Hadhrami merchant-teacher of great authority and charisma who is said to have initially settled in Gowa in the 17th century. It is of particular interest because the migration of Sayydid Jalaluddin occurred well before the major Hadhrami diaspora to Southeast Asia in the mid-19th century. Of particular interest is the way Sayyid Jalaluddin and his descendants became integrated within the Makassar community. Sayyid Jalaluddin’s legacy to the Cikoang community is the Tarekat Bahr ul-Nur, whose mystic teachings expound the creation of the world from the ‘Nur Muhammad’. A consequence of this teaching is an enormous emphasis on the celebration of Maudu’ (Maulid or the Birth of the Prophet) as expressed in the local assertion: ‘My existence on this earth is for nothing but Maudu’.’ Every year this prompts the Cikoang community to hold one of the most elaborate and colourful Maulid celebrations in Indonesia. This study was originally submitted as an MA thesis at ANU in 1998, but soon became recognised as an important contribution to Hadhrami studies. Its author, M. Adlin Sila, has since gone on to complete his PhD at ANU, Being Muslim in Bima of Sumbawa, Indonesia: Practice, Politics and Cultural Diversity. This study of Bima and its religious history establishes him as a major researcher on the diverse traditions of Islam in eastern Indonesia

This paper examines the role of foreign proselytizers in the development of religious life in Indonesia by investigating foreign attendances in Masjid Kebon Jeruk, Taman Sari, West Jakarta. The mosque has been long popular for its fiunction as a headquarter for the followers of a transnational Islamic movement, Jama?ah Tabligh, from all over Indonesia since long time ago. But little study has undergone to explore the role of this mosque as a host institute for foreign proselytizers from different countries especially from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh or abbreviarted as IPB. In addition, the mosque also hosts those who come from other countires such as Africa, Europe, America and Australia. I met a few of them who just dropped by for a couple of days and joint the group from Indonesia to do dakwah or khuruj on foot to all parts of Indonesia. The research findings show that the role of Masjid Kebon Jeruk is twofold: the first is to function as headquarter for members of Jama?ah Tabligh in Indonesia, and second, to function as host institute for foreign followers of Jama?ah Tabligh from all over the world

This study explores the advent of microfinance institution that has been an important development in recent years. Through case study on one microfinance institution namely lumbung pitih nagari located in Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia, this study found that the existence of the micro credit institute has been influenced by several factors such as state regulations. In 1997, the central bank of Indonesia (BI) carried out regulatory reforms in order to reduce the risk of bank failures. This regulation in fact has weakened the role of microfinance institutions in giving financial services to small-medium enterprises (SMEs). However, in the reformation era, many local microfinance institutions emerge as the Ministry of Cooperation and Small-Medium Enterprises has officially given support for the betterment of SMEs through soft loan mechanism. LPN has been one of its kind which is able to run profitably and at the same time to facilitate credit for SMEs in the region

An Example of Neo-Tarekat in Bandung, Indonesia

At present, several tarekats surfaced in the urban centers of Indonesia and continued to perform as a vehicle of social and cultural cohesion. The emergence of these so-called neo-tarekats (neo-sufi mystical orders) introduced rational reference to the sacred texts and Islamic law and rejected the close association between tarekats and the veneration of saints and holy places as generally known as silsilah in the old version of tarekats. This article depicts a close look at of Tarekat Kadisiyyah, an example of the neo-tarekats, located in central Bandung city of West Java. Most of the followers of this tarekat come from young and educated among urban people in Bandung. Mursyid (Ar: murshid) of this tarekat refers to a person named Suprapto Kadis, who experienced the absence of an outward mursyid (lahiriah), but received direct guidance from Allah. There is no chain of transmission of mystical knowledge from a special mursyid to him. This kind of mursyid reminds us the concept of uwaysiyah in classical Islamic literature. Uways is the person who knew the prophet Muhammad but never met him in person. Another concept can be used to analyzes this phenomena is the notions of khidr functioning as an invisible guide for the mursyid. Tarekat Kadisiyyah trained its students that one should become his own self in order to know Allah. In doing this, Tarekat Kadisiyyah concluded that shari>‘ah is important as it is the vehicle to gain closeness to Allah. Keywords: Tarekat Kadisiyah, Suprapto Kadis, neo-tarekat, mursyid, suluk</p
