MUHAMMAD NAZARUL YANIS : The Land Suitability Evaluation of Dairi Regency for Robusta Coffee plant (Coffea robusta Lindl.). Guided by Ir. Hardy Guchi MP. and Mariani Sembiring SP. MP. This research purposed to evaluate the suitability of land for cultivation of robusta coffee in Dairi with altitude is at 400 - 1700 m above sea level . This research started to do on May 2013 to November 2013. The research conducted by taking a sample soil based method free of survey grid with detail of survey level and then analyzed on the laboratory and land evaluation performed by the matching method is based on the need of land for plants with properties owned by land on any limiting factors . The parameters observed in the field are soil depth, soil drainage, slope, the dangers of erosion, the dangers of flood, and the rock surface and laboratory parameters analyzed include physical properties (texture) and chemical properties of the soil pH, soil cation exchanges capacity, base saturation, C-organic, and soil salinity. The results showed that the actual land suitability classes for sample 1 is S3tc, sample 2 is S3tc,nr, sample 3 is S3tc, sample 4 is S3tc,nr,eh, sample 5 is S3tc,nr, sample 6 is S3tc,nr, sample 7 is Nrc, sample 8 is S3tc,nr, sample 9 is S3tc,rc,nr, sample 10 is S3tc, sample 11 is S3tc,nr, sample 12 is S3tc,oa,rc,nr, sample 13 is S3tc,nr, sample 14 is S3tc,rc, sample 15 is S3tc,nr,uh, and sample 16 is Nrc. Optimum performance of green machining on thin walled ti6al4v using RSM and ANN in terms of cutting force and surface roughness

    No full text
Thin walled titanium alloys are mostly applied in the aerospace industry owing to their favorable characteristic such as high strength-to-weight ratio. Besides vibration, the friction at the cutting zone in milling of thin-walled Ti6Al4V will create inconsistencies in the cutting force and increase the surface roughness. Previous researchers reported the use of vegetable oils in machining metal as an effort towards green machining in reducing the undesirable cutting friction. Machining experiments were conducted under Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) using coconut oil as cutting fluid, which has better oxidative stability than other vegetable oil. Uncoated carbide tools were used in this milling experiment. The influence of cutting speed, feed and depth of cut on cutting force and surface roughness were modeled using response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN). Experimental machining results indicated that ANN model prediction was more accurate compared to the RSM model. The maximum cutting force and surface roughness values recorded are 14.89 N, and 0.161 ?m under machining conditions of 125 m/min cutting speed, 0.04 mm/tooth feed, 0.25 mm radial depth of cut (DOC) and 5 mm axial DOC

A comparison of microscale techniques for determining fracture toughness of LiMn2O4 particles

    No full text
Accurate estimation of fracture behavior of commercial LiMn2O4 particles is of great importance to predict the performance and lifetime of a battery. The present study compares two different microscale techniques to quantify the fracture toughness of LiMn2O4 particles embedded in an epoxy matrix. The first technique uses focused ion beam (FIB) milled micro pillars that are subsequently tested using the nanoindentation technique. The pillar geometry, critical load at pillar failure, and cohesive FEM simulations are then used to compute the fracture toughness. The second technique relies on the use of atomic force microscopy (AFM) to measure the crack opening displacement (COD) and subsequent application of Irwin's near field theory to measure the mode-I crack tip toughness of the material. Results show pillar splitting method provides a fracture toughness value of 0.24 MPa.m1/2, while COD measurements give a crack tip toughness of 0.81 MPa.m1/2. The comparison of fracture toughness values with the estimated value on the reference LiMn2O4 wafer reveals that micro pillar technique provides measurements that are more reliable than the COD method. The difference is associated with ease of experimental setup, calculation simplicity, and little or no influence of external factors as associated with the COD measurements

Effect of lithiation on micro-scale fracture toughness of LixMn2O4 cathode

    No full text
An optimized nanoindentation pillar splitting technique is used for the fracture toughness measurement of spinel LixMn2O4 cathode material under different states of charge (SoC), along with the high-speed nanoindentation results for nanomechanical property mapping. High-speed nanoindentation enables for a robust and efficient evaluation of elastic modulus and hardness as a function of the SoC on strongly heterogeneous materials. The fracture toughness decreases linearly upon de-lithiation, with an overall reduction of 53% from 0% to 100% SoC. Decrease in fracture toughness is associated with the volume change, increase of defect density and stresses related to diffusion of lithium upon de-lithiation
