Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente, Florianópolis, 2007The aim of the present study is to analyse how issues of Albanian national identity are portrayed in Ismail Kadaré's novel Broken April (Prilli i Thyer), and how such features have been appropriated and translated onto the screen into a Northeastern Brazilian context. I depart from the premise that, even though Brazilian elements are indeed shown in the film, the non existence of the Kanun in Brazil, and the use of narrative techniques different from the ones employed in the novel render the story of the blood feuds in the film more universal than the genuinely Albanian reality depicted in the novel. In sum, the appropriation transcends the Albanian reality into a universal context, showing, at the same time, elements which are typical of the Brazilian culture.O objetivo do presente estudo é analisar como questões sobre a identidade nacional Albanesa são retratadas no romance Abril Despedaçado (Prilli i Thyer), de Ismail Kadaré, e como tais questões foram apropriadas e traduzidas para a tela num contexto Nordestino-Brasileiro.

Reconfigurable computing, in which general purpose processor (GPP) is increasingly used for high performance computing where massive fine-grain parallelism can be exploited. A challenge is to exploit such massive parallelism on LabVIEW and more specifically how to map an application on the heterogeneous underlying platform. Similar to hardware compilers, software compilers can use loops to exploit such parallelism. The existence of a dependence between data is one the constraints that limits parallelism in a program. In this dissertation, we propose a transformation called Recursive Variable Expansion (RVE), which can be applied to an important category of loops. It removes all the data dependences by expanding the variable with its dependence expression until the expression becomes only a function of known variables. We classify two types of expressions, one which expands polynomially, and other which expands exponentially on the number of input variables. Irrespective of the type of expression, when we map an expression on LabVIEW, the area (LUT) required is proportional to the number of terms in the expression. The exponentially expanding version is applicable to the category of dynamic programming (DP) problems for which RVE is combined with dataflow. We demonstrated better performance than dataflow only, which is the best technique known so far for such problems. We generalize the approach by proposing a framework such that the technique can be applied to a large range of DP problems. Finally, we validate the proposed DP framework using the Smith-Waterman (SW) algorithm, which is a widely used, computation and data intensive application in bioinformatics. We show that our implementation yields a two times speedup at the cost of almost three times more area as compared to the conventional dataflow traditional array implementation

Malaysia is a nation that is encounters a tropical rainforest climate. Hot weather and rain are the two components that could end the beauty of the building and other negative impressions. The buildings who are located with nearest of water sources cause a dampness growth more seriously. It is one of factors of failure of building and damage that must be taken seriously to be maintenance. The sources and sign of dampness growth need to be analysed early before it become more serious problems to building and users. The purpose of this study is to aim an assessment on dampness growth in UITM Perak. The selection spot of dampness divided into three places at the case study for getting a sign of dampness growth. After a study through the observation with uses instruments investigation like moisture meter and thermo hygro- meter, the sign of dampness growth can be detected. The dampness influence by humidity of the material caused by exposed to high humidity atmosphere and higher in humidity of material that influence the sign of dampness. The higher of humidity content, the higher of dampness growth. Therefore, the maintenance staff and user of the building must take an early action and users must do complaint rapid and efficiency to the maintenance staff to avoid the dampness growth become serious

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Lactobacillus plantarum LAB 12, a lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strain isolated from local fermented food, possess probiotic characteristics. In spite of their chemopreventive properties, the vulnerability of LAB 12 during gastrointestinal transit (pH and enzymatic action) and industrial processing (heat and storage) remains a major concern. This study addressed these issues by immobilising LAB 12, by means of microencapsulation, within alginate (Alg)-based polymeric matrix, with incorporation of xanthan gum (XG) and coated with Ch (Alg-XG-Ch), or pea protein isolate (PPi; Alg-PPi). The physicochemical properties of Alg-based microcapsules were characterised by means of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis. Survivability of microencapsulated LAB 12 exposed to simulated gastrointestinal fluids (pH 1.8 and pH 6.8), high temperatures and various storage conditions (4/8-week storage at 4 and 25 °C) were assessed. Pelletisation study was conducted to evaluate the survivability of microencapsulated LAB 12 subjected to actual heat challenge in industrial processing. The microencapsulated LAB 12 was further assessed for their safety through acute and subchronic toxicity studies in vivo. The fate and release of LAB 12 from Alg-based microcapsules in different rodent gut sections were examined by means of confocal microscopy and qPCR respectively. The chemopreventive properties of microencapsulated LAB 12 were validated using an orthotopic mouse model. The Alg-XG-Ch microcapsules diameter (1299-1343 Lim) were relatively outsized (> 350 \xm), a feature which could adversely affect sensory properties resulting in inappropriate mouth feel and flavour. Alg-PPi microcapsules, on the other hand were presented with a smaller diameter range (157.7-189.5 Lim) and could be an ideal microencapsulation system for LAB 12. This was based on their excellent tolerance against simulated gastric juice (96.4% survivability, intense heat (80.2% survivability at 100 °C for 30 minutes), storage (>7 log CFU g-1 after 8-week storage at 4 and 25 °C), pelletisation (89.4% survivability) and targeted release in simulated intestinal fluid (>9 log CFU g-1). The Alg-PPi LAB 12 microcapsules were used for all the susequent in vivo studies. For toxicity studies, no treatment (2.5 >7 log CFU) only in the intestines. Also, orthotopic mouse model pre-fed with microencapsulated LAB 12 significantly (p < 0.05) reduced tumour volume (-98.87%) and weight (-89.27%) when compared to control. The chemopreventive effect could be possibly attributed to apoptosis and antiangiogenesis mediated. at least in part, through up-regulation of p53 (+32.50%) and caspase-3 (+92.61%), and down-regulation of COX-2 (-63.96%), VEGF (-65.93%) and PECAM-1 (-62.72%). Altogether, this study strongly implied the possibility of having the LAB12-loaded Alg-PPi microcapsules safely incorporated into various food types and nutraceutical products upon succesful completion of clinical trials

Job satisfaction is a feeling of a person either satisfies or dissatisfy toward their employment. Company that provides employment needs to ensure that their company provides positive job satisfaction among worker to obtain best performance from their workers. This study investigates three independence factors (pay, communication and working condition) toward job satisfaction with sample of 52 workers that work in the Lembah Kesang oil palm plantation. The objectives for this study are to investigate the relationship between all independent factors toward the jobs satisfaction of workers and to determine the most influence factor that contributes with job satisfaction. The method for this research is by doing survey that using questionnaires. The data that have been collected are analyzed using correlation coefficient and regression from the software Statistical Package for Science (SPSS). The results from correlation coefficient analysis show all independence (pay, communication and working condition) factors have significant relationship with the job satisfaction. The result from regression analysis show that the working condition is the most influence factors that contribute to the job satisfaction with value of (beta=0.249). As for the recommendation, the management at the Lembah Kesang plantation need to make a long term plan to improve the working condition as the factor has high contribution to their company. The management of the oil palm estate can use the finding to improve the factor of communication, pay and working condition in their estate to increase the job satisfaction among workers as all factors show a significant relationship with job satisfaction among workers in oil palm plantation

Over the past few years, the number of foreign labour has increased tremendously due to vast development of the country’s economy. However leads to a new problem which is in aspects of communication barriers between local contractors and foreign unskilled labour. Hence, this issue comes out with an aim f the research which is to identify the method of local contractor in order to manage the communications barrier towards foreign unskilled labour. The objectives are to identify the factors of communication barriers, to investigate the effects from communication barriers and to explore the approach of the local contractors that can be used to solve the communication barrier. A quantitative approach was used in this research and a questionnaire was used as the instrument which was distributed to the local contractors from G5. The outcomes of this research found that the highest factor was due to insufficient knowledge of the local language as foreign labours’ fluency level depends mostly on years of experience living in the country. This is regarded as a huge problem as total miscommunication could even cause accidents to happen in the construction site. Therefore, the best solution to overcome this problem is by conducting local language training classes for foreign unskilled labour by Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB). The result of this research will help the local contractors in order to overcome the communication barriers towards foreign unskilled labour

Rice (Oryza sativa) is the most essential food crop which been cultivated worldwide. Rice production in Malaysia is low compared with other countries other rice growing in the world. This study is conducted at Rantau Panjang because the area is located near the Malaysia-Thailand border. The objectives of this study are to identify the purchasing behaviour of consumers on rice in terms of quality, to analyze the factors that affect consumer preferences on rice brands and to analyze the marketing factors of rice brand preferred by consumers. The methodology that has been implemented in this study is survey method. Based on the data, it showed that there is very strongly positive relationship between the acceptances of rice usually consumed by the consumer with the marketing factors of rice brands. The purchasing behavior of consumer on rice in term of quality and the consumer preferences on rice brands also have a strongly positive relationship with the acceptance of rice. From this study, it can be concluded that the marketing factors of rice is the most important because it can influence the acceptance of rice that the consumer preferred. For the recommendation, the supplier and seller of rice should study a lot about the marketing of rice to increase the sale of rice
