No full textIn her multifaceted, polyphonic essay “The Gift of Biography,” Caroline Stoessinger offers her reader an intimate insight into the emotional substratum of the ineffable bond between the biographer and her subject. The rapport, whose complex texture involves compassion, respect, and attentiveness, unwittingly manifests itself to the reader as the sine qua non condition of an authentic dialogue soon after he or she accepts Stoessinger’s invitation to join her in retracing the history of her friendship with Alice Herz-Sommer, the heroine of her internationally acclaimed book A Century of Wisdom. In the process of the shared recollection, the emotional horizons of the autobiographer and the reader fuse, allowing the latter to sense that the (auto)biography to which she or he has been made privy, has been gifted to them by the author, who has, imperceptibly, become a dear friend. The theory of eucharistic presence in the early Caroline divines, examined in its European theological setting
No full textThe question of Christ's presence in the eucharist was an issue
which caused great controversy in the Reformation period, and which
continued to evoke dispute during the seventeenth century. Various
interpretations of the Caroline divines' teaching on the eucharistic
presence have been offered, but often they seem either to indicate the
theological position of the writer rather than that of the theologians
considered, or to ignore the broader context of eucharistic doctrine.
The purpose of this study, therefore, was 1. to investigate the
theology of eucharistic presence in the thinking of several seventeenth-century
Anglican divines, and 2. to examine their teaching in relation
to the sixteenth-century Anglican heritage and the various continental
sacramental doctrines, Reformed, Lutheran, Roman Catholic and Eastern
Orthodox.
To accomplish this goal, eight theologians were chosen for examination:
Adrianus Saravia, Lancelot Andrewes, John Cosin, Richard
Montague, William Forbes, William Laud, Jeremy Taylor and Herbert
Thorndike. When available, nineteenth-century editions of their works
were used; otherwise, seventeenth-century texts were employed.
Similarly, modern editions of Roman, Orthodox, Lutheran and Reformed
writings were utilized when possible. Thy examination of eucharistic
teaching included seven major points: 1. the sacrament as mystery,
2. eucharistic change, 3. the relationship between Christ's body and
the bread, 4. eucharistic communion, 5. the nature of Christ's body in
the sacrament, 6. consecration, and 7. adoration in the eucharist.
This study has shown that there was great diversity in the
thinking of the Caroline divines (although they did not treat the
subject of eucharistic presence with equal detail or depth); no
unified understanding of sacramental presence was expressed. Reformed
ideas inherited from the previous century remained strong, but new
tendencies toward other understandings of the eucharist can be
discerned. The period, therefore, can be seen to represent a new
stage in the history of Anglican eucharistic doctrine
Electrosurgical knife equipped with diffused reflectance spectroscopy sensing for tumor margin detection during breast conserving surgery: A phantom study
No full textDistinguishing the diseased breast tissue from the healthy tissue is a sorely challenging task for the surgeons during breast conserving surgery (BCS) as both tissues own relatively similar visual and haptic characteristics. It has been shown that diffused reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) has the potential to be used as a real-time tumor margin detection technique during BCS. In this research, an electrosurgical knife is equipped with fiber-based DRS sensing to provide the surgeon with real-time oncological guidance during BCS. To prevent overheating of the fibers, they were placed inside quartz tubes which were mounted on the electrosurgical knife. The effect of using quartz tubes and debris formation during electrosurgery on the DRS measurements on porcine tissue was investigated. Furthermore to investigate the performance of the new device, a heterogeneous breast phantom representing optical properties and anatomical shape of the real breast was developed. The new device was then used to cut through the phantom’s layers to assess the performance of the new knife while cutting. Finally, a BCS was performed on the phantom using the new knife without receiving visual and haptic feedback from the tissue. The results show that both using the quartz tubes and the formed debris do not have a significant effect on the DRS output. Moreover, the DRS outputs obtained during cutting the layered phantom showed the transition between the layers clearly, demonstrating that the cutting effect on the phantom tissue does not significantly affect the measurements . The X-ray images from the phantom before and after BCS using the new device confirmed the complete resection of the tumors from the breast phantom. Seeing from a new angle: design of a sideways-looking fiber-optic probe to advance spine surgery
No full textOur research highlights the potential of Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (DRS) in detecting cortical breaches during pedicle screw placement. We propose a sideways-looking fiber-optic probe, integrating diffuse light emission with both forward and sideways light collection. Experiments on an optical tissue phantom validate the probe’s potential to distinguish bone tissues and provide real-time guidance for spine surgery. Our findings prove that DRS with diffuse emission can detect perpendicular breaches, and demonstrate how the integration of a 45◦ slanted fiber coated with gold enables parallel breach detection, advancing spine surgery by allowing for accurate pedicle screw placement.Medical Instruments & Bio-Inspired Technolog
Review of From Author to Text: Re-reading George Eliot\u27s Romola; George Eliot and Italy: Literary, Cultural and Politcal Influences from Dante to the Risorgimento

There is a curious tension between the incorporativeness of Andrew Thompson\u27s title, George Eliot and Italy, and his compendiously specific sub-title, Literary, Cultural and Political Influences from Dante to the Risorgimento, which somehow led me to expect something like a descriptive catalogue of alleged influences. Instead, I found a book which indeed has awkwardnesses, but which pursues an argument and offers valuable illumination of George Eliot\u27s whole career (and not just Romola, as might easily be assumed). Barbara Hardy memorably observed in 1959 that \u27Romola is undoubtedly a book which it is more interesting to analyse than simply to read\u27, an opinion to which I still subscribe after a fashion which has been profoundly qualified by the collection of essays on Romola assembled by Caroline Levine and Mark W. Turner, which added to other work on the novel in recent years makes it impossible \u27simply to read\u27 Romola. Levine and Turner and their contributors challenge the whole range of judgments and assumptions about the novel of which George Eliot herself declared \u27I began it a young woman, I finished it an old woman\u27
Dissimilarity is used as evidence of category membership in multidimensional perceptual categorization: a test of the similarity-dissimilarity generalized context model
Get PDFIn exemplar models of categorization, the similarity between an exemplar and category members constitutes evidence that the exemplar belongs to the category. We test the possibility that the dissimilarity to members of competing categories also contributes to this evidence. Data were collected from two 2-dimensional perceptual categorization experiments, one with lines varying in orientation and length and the other with coloured patches varying in saturation and brightness. Model fits of the similarity-dissimilarity generalized context model were used to compare a model where only similarity was used with a model where both similarity and dissimilarity were used. For the majority of participants the similarity-dissimilarity model provided both a significantly better fit and better generalization, suggesting that people do also use dissimilarity as evidence

The dispute over the shape of the Union led to the constitutional compromise , which did not define the relationship between the federal government and the states clearly enough. The interpretation of the Constitution in the first decades of the United States and the centralization of power led to the Southern separatism, which was founded on the concept of states’ rights. Basing on it, Southern politicians derived the right to nullify the acts of federal power and ultimately the right to secede. In the article the author analyzes the views of the most prominent representatives of the South: John Taylor of Caroline, St. George Tucker, Robert Y. Hayne and John C.Calhoun, who laid the theoretical foundations of resistance to the tyranny of the Union
Devoted Christian, Dominant Duchess, Diminished Historical Recognition: Author Portraiture in the Hours of Catherine of Cleves
Get PDFOwner portraits often appear in the illuminations or historiated initials of the popular late-medieval devotional, the book of hours. By the 13th century, a text known as the book of hours had filled a much sought-after longing of the laity to mimic the practices of the clergy. Through the production of this new lay prayer book, the practice of monastic communities gathering at canonical hours to recite prayers could now be practiced individually by lay people. These prayer books were often commissioned for, and at times by, women. This paper will discuss one specific book of hours, commissioned by a 15th century Duchess, Catherine of Cleves. The Hours of Catherine of Cleves, illuminated by the Master of Catherine of Cleves, a famously original artist recognized as the finest illuminator of the medieval northern Netherlands, is a masterpiece. The incredibly detailed miniatures display not only a unique and lavish display of biblical narrative, but the author portraits and full pages on which they appear offer a very personal look into the life and priorities of its owner and commissioner, Catherine of Cleves. This paper seeks to explore the leaves of the Hours of Catherine of Cleves where her portrait appears. I examine the purposeful prominence of feminine themes as well as emphasis on her personal heraldry and ancestors, rather than that of her husband. These purposeful emphases support that Catherine was not only the commissioner, but also involved in artistic decisions surrounding key images included in her book of hours.</p

Get PDFThe paper presents the question of the attitude that Gabriela Zapolska and Maria Szeliga had towards the education of women at university. The author discusses the texts written by the two writers from 1889: Zapolska’s articles: W sprawie emancypacji and Paniom emancypantkom… odpowiedź, released in “Kurier Warszawski”, and Szeliga’s novel Na przebój. The release of these texts was preceded by obtaining the degree of Doctor of Medicine by the 21-year-old Caroline Schultze from Warsaw. She had received the title from the University of Sorbonne in Paris in 1888 after writing the dissertation Kobieta-lekarz w XIX wieku, which was noted by press in Poland and abroad. The debate over Schultze’s dissertation became heated, among other reasons due to her opponent, the famous authority in the field of neurology, Jean-Martin Charcot, who referred to gender stereotypes and questioned the ability of women to perform the job of a doctor. Zapolska did not support the idea of university education of women and undermined the honesty of its intentions. Szeliga defended female higher education. In the novel Na przebój she presented the process of women entering the medical profession. In order to contradict her opponents’ argument about women’s lack of aptitude to practise medicine, which allegedly results from their nature, she took her character, Natalia Dortmuntówna, a Pole studying in Paris, to the hospital and a mortuary, emphasising the role of practical preparation for the profession.Artykuł ukazuje kwestię stosunku Gabrieli Zapolskiej i Marii Szeligi do kształcenia uniwersyteckiego kobiet. Autorka omawia teksty obu pisarek pochodzące z 1889 roku: artykuły Zapolskiej W sprawie emancypacji i Paniom emancypantkom… odpowiedź, drukowane na łamach „Kuriera Warszawskiego”, i powieść Szeligi Na przebój. Ukazanie się tekstów Zapolskiej i Szeligi poprzedza uzyskanie przez dwudziestojednoletnią warszawiankę Karolinę Szulc (Caroline Schultze) na paryskiej Sorbonie stopnia doktora medycyny (w grudniu 1888 roku, na podstawie rozprawy Kobieta-lekarz w XIX wieku), co odnotowała prasa polska i zagraniczna. Debata nad rozprawą Szulcówny stała się głośna, m.in. za sprawą jej oponenta, sławnego autorytetu w zakresie neurologii, Jean-Martina Charcota, który odwołując się do stereotypów płciowych, podawał w wątpliwość możliwość wykonywania zawodu lekarza przez kobiety. Zapolska nie popierała idei uniwersyteckiego kształcenia kobiet i podważała szczerość ich intencji. Szeliga broniła kobiecych studiów wyższych. W powieści Na przebój ukazała początki pracy kobiet w zawodzie lekarza. By odeprzeć argument przeciwników o braku predyspozycji do praktykowania przez kobiety medycyny, mających rzekomo wynikać z ich natury, swoją bohaterkę, studiującą w Paryżu Polkę, Natalię Dormuntównę, zaprowadziła do szpitala i prosektorium, podkreślając rolę praktycznego przygotowania do zawodu
