Earwax and topic alpha-tocopherol acetate: The cerumenolytic action.
Objective: Cerumen (ear wax) is a physiologic secretion of ceruminous and sebaceous glands of the
external ear canal. Its main function is lubricate the external auditory canal, creating a humid and
warm environment. Cerumen usually, is expelled outside the ear canal to the movements of the jaw.
Sometimes, however, in some people due to the shape of the ear canal or due to inappropriate cleaning
maneuvers, ear wax can accumulate, causing an obstruction (plug). When treatment is indicated, there
are three recommended ear wax removal methods: irrigation, manual removal, cerumenolytic agents.
Methods: For the study 137 patients were enrolled, age range 6-80 years old, mean 46.7, the subjects
are divided in three groups standing the age and created a score in relation to the ear wax plug (0:
Complete obstruction of external auditory canal; 1: Ear wax plug obstructing 2/3 of external auditory
canal; 2: Ear wax plug obstructing 1/3 of external auditory canal; 3: Absence of ear wax). Each patient
underwent topic treatment with alpha tocopherol acetate and polydecene (Filme Oto Spray), 3 puffs
each external auditory canal, 3 times/day for 7/14 days. The aim of the treatment was to completely
remove the ear wax plug in 7 days (primary endpoint) or in 14 days (secondary endpoint).
Results: Children and adolescent patients reached endpoints more than adults and older patients, with
statistical significance (p<0.05).
Conclusion: The use of the composition of alpha-tocopherol acetate (vitamin E) and polydecene (Filme
Oto Spray) allows to cleaning of the auditory canal and the complete visualization of the tympanic
membrane, 7 days after the first application
Architectural Conservation and Cultural Inclusion. The Applicative Case of Motta San Giovanni (Reggio Calabria-Italy) and its Romanian Community
Abstract. The paper describes a restoration and reuse proposal for the Praci neighborhood in Motta San Giovanni, an inland town of the Reggio Calabria Province-Italy, aimed to accommodate and facilitate the integration of its migrant Romanian community. The project proposes a plan of self-constructive restoration, to be used as the residence of Romanian migrants, that for the Municipality could be a tool to make the whole community responsible for management and conservation of now abandoned a vernacular building heritage and for the migrant community could constitute not only an opportunity for improving its living, as well as social, condition, but also for taking advantage of a educative experience, considering that a significant part of Romanian migrants in Motta San Giovanni is employed in constructio

The study consists of two parts; the first is dedicated to the history of the Federazione italiana delle biblioteche circolanti cattoliche since its foundation (1904) up to 1912 and was published in the previous volume of the «Nuovi Annali », XXVII (2013), pp. 137-163. In this second part, the author outlines the intellectual figure of Giovanni Casati, who directed the «Rivista di letture» from 1912 to 1944, transforming the magazine of the Federation in a journal engaged in the spreading of Catholic culture. To this militant engagement Casati matched an intense publishing program, which found its expression in the publication of literary essays, manuals and reference works
International audienceFossil remains of fan-shaped spines Cidaris have been largely described in the literature since the 19th century. However, it is the first time that they have been found in serravalian outcrops in the vicinity of Motta San Giovanni and Musuponiti (Calabria, Southern Italy). Modern description of numerous test fragments and spines collected in the field allows classifying these remains of Cidaris in their taxonomic context. The graphic analysis of biometric measurements carried in this study made it possible to name Cidaris remiger (Ponzi, 1876) as representative of the calabrian fossils as well as the other fossils studied or known. This taxonomy facilitates the comparisons with the present-day known examples, namely Cidaris blakei (Agassiz, 1878) and helps clarify the paleo-depth of the Motta San Giovanni formation deposits at these localities.
Abnormality and Strict-Sense Minimizers That Are Not Extended Minimizers
We consider a constrained optimal control problem and an extension of it, in which the set
of strict sense trajectories is enlarged. Extension is a common procedure in optimal control, used to derive necessary and sufficient optimality conditions for the original problem from the extended one, which usually admits a minimizer and has a more regular structure. However, this procedure fails if the two problems have different infima. It is therefore relevant to identify such situations. Following on from earlier work by Warga but adopting perturbation techniques developed in nonsmooth analysis, we investigate the relation between the occurrence of an infimum gap and abnormality of necessary conditions. For a notion of local minimizer based on control distance and an extension including the impulsive one, we prove that (i) a local extended minimizer which is not a local minimizer of the original problem and (ii) a local strict sense minimizer which is not a local minimizer of the extended problem, both satisfy the extended maximum principle in abnormal form. The main novelty is result (ii), as until now it had only been shown that a strict sense minimizer which is not an extended minimizer is abnormal for an `averaged version' of the maximum principle
New trellis vector residual quantizer: Applications to image coding
We present a new Trellis Coded Vector Residual Quantizer (TCVRQ) that combines trellis coding and vector residual quantization. We propose new methods for computing quantization levels and experimentally analyze the performances of our TCVRQ in the case of still image coding. Experimental comparisons show that our quantizer performs better than the standard Tree and Exhaustive Search Quantizers based on the Generalized Lloyd Algorithm (GLA)
