    MOT meets AHA!

    No full text
MOT (My Online Teacher) is an adaptive hypermedia system (AHS) web-authoring environment. MOT is now being further developed according to the LAOS five-layer adaptation model for adaptive hypermedia and adaptive web-material, containing a domain -, goal -, user -, adaptation – and presentation model. The adaptation itself follows the LAG three-layer granularity structure, figuring direct adaptation techniques and rules, an adaptation language and adaptation strategies. In this paper we shortly describe the theoretical basis of MOT, i.e., LAOS and LAG, and then give some information about the current state of MOT. The purpose of this paper is to show how we plan the design and development of MOT and the well-known system AHA! (Adaptive Hypermedia Architecture), developed at the Technical University of Eindhoven since 1996. We aim especially at the integration with AHA! 2.0. Although AHA! 2.0 represents a progress when compared to the previous versions, a lot of adaptive features that are described by the LAOS and the adaptation granulation model and that are being implemented into MOT are not yet (directly) available. So therefore AHA! can benefit from MOT. On the other hand, AHA! offers a running platform for the adaptation engine, which can benefit MOT in return

Analysis of Japanese MOT education requirements by a Needs-Seeds matrix

In recent years, MOT (management of technology) has been a hot issue in Japan for surviving severe competition in science and technology research, development and business. In this paper, a tendency of newly developed MOT programs through national project until the end of 2003 is analyzed. This analysis just covers limited number of developed programs that are available to be referred at the time of writing this paper through open source, but still might be useful to consider a direction of future development by showing Needs-Seeds matrix that was constructed with current seeds (elements of developed programs) and potential needs (social and commercial requirements). It is suggested that this type of analysis is useful and should be conducted on a regular basis to make continuous improvement of MOT programs.2004 IEEE International Engineering Management Conferenc

Diffusive author(s), cohesive author: Analysis of S/N (1994)

This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Some applications and chemistry of (S)-2-(diphenylmethyl)-pyrrolidine

The synthetic utility of (S)-2-(diphenylmethyl)-pyrrolidine (1) and its amide derivative, (S)-2-(diphenylmethyl)-5-oxo-pyrrolidine (2) were examined in two contexts; as chiral auxiliary compounds in asymmetric alkylation reactions and Diels- Alder reactions; as chiral solvating agents (CSAs) for (^1)NMR evaluation of chiral acids and alcohols. In the former case, it was shown that monoalkylation of N-acyl derivatives of (1) and (2) using lithiated bases led to poor diastereoselectivities (1:1 to 1.12:1) and poor yields (28 to 33 %), while alkylation reactions using HMPA proceeded with modest diastereoselectivities (1.49:1 to 4.25:1). The results of the Diels-Alder study remain premature at present. In the latter case, (1) was an excellent chiral solvating agent (CSA) for chiral carboxylic acids, however it was less effective for chiral alcohols. The amide derivative (2) was substantially less effective as a CSA for chiral carboxylic acids and failed completely to resolve chiral alcohols

Comment on "Wandering minds: The default network and stimulus-independent thought"

Mason et al. (Reports, 19 January 2007, p. 393) attributed activity in certain regions of the "resting" brain to the occurrence of mind-wandering. However, previous research has demonstrated the difficulty of distinguishing this type of stimulus-independent thought from stimulus-oriented thought (e.g., watchfulness). Consideration of both possibilities is required to resolve this ambiguity
