    Development of a prototype of equipment to assist in the identification of children at risk of hearing loss in their first year of life

    O objetivo deste trabalho foi de desenvolver um protótipo de equipamento (dispositivo) que pode auxiliar na identificação das crianças com risco de perda auditiva em seu primeiro ano de vida, na atenção primária e para ser utilizado durante as consultas de puericultura nas unidades básicas de saúde. O estudo foi dividido em duas etapas: a primeira consistiu no detalhamento do desenvolvimento do dispositivo e a segunda na calibração (aferição) em relação à emissão acústica e comparação da variabilidade da frequência cardíaca com equipamento de referência no mercado. Na elaboração do dispositivo foi utilizado o modelo do processo de desenvolvimento de produto (PDP) que tem como processo a fase de pré-desenvolvimento (planejamento) e fases do desenvolvimento, como a descrição do projeto detalhado. Na etapa dois houve a calibração do dispositivo em relação à emissão acústica, comparação da variabilidade da frequência cardíaca com equipamento referência no mercado - a cinta de captação de frequência cardíaca Polar RS800CX® (Polar Electro, Finlândia) - por meio da análise estatística e confiabilidade dos dados. A calibração foi feita pela empresa especializada manutenção de produtos eletromédicos audiológicos, ACÚSTICA ORLANDI, situada na cidade de Bauru. Foram selecionados 20 indivíduos adultos, sem perda auditiva, entre 18 e 40 anos. O procedimento de captação do batimento cardíaco foi simultâneo, foram testados os dois equipamentos, o dispositivo e o polar RS800CX, em um mesmo indivíduo, sendo o sensor de pulso (do dispositivo) de sinal cardíaco preso no dedo de uma das mãos (exceto polegar), sendo recomendado o dedo indicador [MANUAL DO FABRICANTE Oxímetro de pulsação de dedo modelo onyx 9500] do sujeito e a cinta fixada no peito, ficando o relógio monitor em posse do aplicador da coleta. Os dados gerados foram analisados pelo software estatístico Statistical Package for Social Sciences® (SPSS) versão 17.0, foram empregados o teste de Shapiro-Wilk, o teste t pareado, o teste não paramétrico de Wilcoxon, o teste de Bland-Altman, teste de correlação de Pearson e Spearman. Os resultados dos testes estatísticos mostraram, por meio do teste paramétrico t pareado para os índices RMSSD e SD1 nas intensidades de 50, 60 e 70 dBNA e o Willcoxon para o silêncio e 80 dBNA, a compatibilidade nas medições feitas pelos dois dispositivos, ressalta-se que este resultado foi confirmado quando se analisou a concordância entre o dispositivo e o POLAR RS800CX na medição dos índices, por meio do teste Bland-Altman. A princípio os índices estudados não foram influenciados pela presença do ruído branco nas diferentes intensidades, porém não é possível generalizar este achado para a população infantil, ou seja, crianças no primeiro ano de vida, pois essas possuem um sistema nervoso autônomo em processo de maturação, o que reflete na variabilidade da frequência cardíaca (VFC). Entende-se que o dispositivo poderá auxiliar em novas pesquisas, com o intuito de confirmar ou não a existência da associação entre a VFC e a acuidade auditiva em crianças no primeiro ano e vida.This work aimed at developing a prototype of equipment (device) that may assist in the identification of children at risk of hearing loss in their first year of life, in primary care and to be used during childcare consultations in basic health units. The study was divided into two stages: the first consisted in detailing the development of the device, and the second in the calibration (measurement) in relation to the acoustic emission and comparison of heart rate variability with reference equipment on the market. In the elaboration of the device, the product development process (PDP) model which has as a process the pre-development phase (planning) and development phases, such as the detailed design description, was used; the second consisted in calibrating the device in relation to the acoustic emission, comparison of heart rate variability with equipment reference on the market - the heart rate sensor belt Polar RS800CX® (Polar Electro, Finland) - through statistical analysis and data reliability. The calibration was carried out by a company specialized in the maintenance of audiological electromedical products, ACÚSTICA ORLANDI, located in the city of Bauru. Twenty adult individuals with no hearing loss, aged 18-40 years, were selected. The heart rate capturing procedure was simultaneous, and the two equipments, the device and the polar RS800CX, were tested on the same subject, with the pulse sensor (of the device) of the heart signal attached to the finger of one hand (except the thumb), the index finger being recommended [MANUFACTURER´s MANUAL - Finger pulse oximeter model onyx 9500] and the strap attached to their chest, the monitor watch being in the possession of the collector. The data generated were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences® (SPSS) version 17.0 statistical software; the Shapiro-Wilk test, paired t-test, Wilcoxon non-parametric test, Bland-Altman test, Pearson and Spearman correlation test were employed. The results of the statistical tests showed, through the paired parametric t test for the RMSSD and SD1 indices at intensities of 50, 60, and 70 dBHL and the Willcoxon test for silence and 80 dBHL, the compatibility in the measurements made by the two devices, it is noteworthy that this result was confirmed when the agreement between the device and the POLAR RS800CX was analyzed in the measurement of the indices, through the Bland-Altman test. At first, the indices studied were not influenced by the presence of white noise at different intensities, but it is not possible to generalize this finding to the infant population, i.e., children in their first year of life, because these have an autonomous nervous system in the process of maturation, which reflects in the heart rate variability (HRV). It is understood that the device may help in further research, in order to confirm or not the existence of the association between HRV and hearing acuity in children in their first year of life

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
