    No full text
The contribution focuses on the epitomes to the Facta et dicta memorabilia of Valerius Maximus, an author of Tiberian age who was himself a selector and epitomator of previous literary works. The two epitomes date back to the Late Antiquity: the epitome of Iulius Paris is complete, whereas the epitome of Ianuarius Nepotianus is interrupted at the beginning of Valerius Maximus’ third book (3, 2, 7). The paper analyses the dedicatory letters of the two epitomes to bring out the methodological principles that guided the authors. Then, a case study is presented to explain the textual strategies that led from the source text (a passage by Livy) to its rewrites, first in Valerius Maximus, then in Iulius Paris and Nepotianus. Finally, to get even better into the epitomator’s workshop, some observations are made on the anecdotes that Nepotianus added to the works of Valerius Maximus

Příkladem tohoto zájmu je text The American Beaver and His Works (Americký bobr a jeho práce) napsaný roku 1868 Henrym Morganem, v němž autor tato zvířata účinně zařazuje do své etnografie. The paper describes the emergence of multispecies ethnography as a form of multiplying experiences and descriptions beyond the human. Despite the definition of multispecies being quite recent, the paper argues that the interest toward the inclusion of other-than-humans in the ethnographic effort dates back at the beginning of the discipline. An example of this interest is the text The American Beaver and His Works written in 1868 by Henry Morgan, in which the author effectively includes these animals in his ethnography. The thesis of the paper is that a multispecies approach can promote a redefinition of hybridity and curiosity as two core features of the ethnographic effort

Low Diagnostic Accuracy of Transthoracic Ultrasound for the Assessment of Spontaneous Pneumothorax in the Emergency Setting: A Multicentric Study

    No full text
Background: Pneumothorax (PNX) represents a common clinical condition in emergency departments (EDs), requiring prompt recognition and treatment. The role of transthoracic ultrasounds (TUSs) in the diagnosis of PNX is still debated. We aimed to prospectively evaluate the accuracy of TUSs in the detection of spontaneous PNX in EDs. Methods: A total of 637 consecutive adult patients who presented to the EDs of four Italian hospitals complaining of acutely onset chest pain and dyspnoea were included in the study. Exclusion criteria were previous traumatic events, cardiogenic causes of pain/dyspnoea and suspected tension PNX. The absence of “lung sliding” (B-mode) and the “bar-code” sign (M-mode) were considered indicative of PNX in a TUS. Accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values (PPVs, NPVs) were calculated using a chest CT scan as reference. Results: Spontaneous PNX occurred in 93 patients: of those, 83 (89.2%) were correctly identified by TUSs. However, 306 patients with suspected PNX at TUS were not confirmed by chest CTs. The diagnostic accuracy of both the absence of “lung sliding” and “bar-code” sign during TUS was 50.4% (95% CI: 46.4–54.3), sensitivity was 89.2% (95% CI: 81.1–94.7), specificity was 43.8% (95% CI: 39.5–48.0), the PPV was 21.3% (95% CI: 19.7–23.1) and the NPV was 96.0% (95% CI: 92.9–97.7). Conclusions: TUS showed high sensitivity but low specificity in the identification of PNX in EDs. Relying exclusively on TUSs results for patients’ management in ED settings is neither suitable nor recommendable. TUS examination can be useful to strengthen the clinical suspicion of PNX, but its results should be confirmed by a chest X-ray or CT scan

The Marca Trevigiana commentators in the age of Ezzelino III da Romano

This thesis focuses on Medieval historiography, in particular the Marca Trevigiana commentators in the age of Ezzelino III da Romano (Gerardo Maurisio, Rolandino da Padova, the author of the Chronicon Marchiae Tarvisinae et Lombardiae, Paride da Cerea, Niccolò Smereglo, and Antonio Godi) in order to analyze the character of Ezzelino and his damnatio memoriae through XIII and XIV centuries writing. This group of citizens’ chronicles represents an intermediate landmark between the old universal chronicles and the new humanistic historiography. In this commentators’ opinion, after the perturbing experience of Ezzelino’s tyranny, it became impossible to reintroduce the canonic and traditional recording of events year by year. Hero or tyrant, Ezzelino had forced chroniclers to look at history from a different perspective. The research starts from the historical sources, in order to cover and examine the narrative techniques of these works. At a later stage, I relate my studies of these chronicles to the historiography of Dante’s life and highlight the connections to the Divine Comedy

On February 3, 2007 Mario Botta presented the feasibility study for the new parish church of St. Rocco, Sambuceto in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of "D'Annunzio", Pescara. The design theme related to the sacred buildings has occupied much of Mario Botta’s latest production whom, as reconfirmed in Pescara, arrived at Sacred buildings designing churches, but also a synagogue and a mosque, rapidly finding the underlying philosophy of architecture. On that occasion the author met the maestro Ticino and dealt with some of greatest subjects of his career, not only contemporary international architecture. The publication traces the phases of the relationship between Botta and the design of new churches, to increase the focus on Sambuceto which involved a difficult comparison between the previous church designed and built by Paride Pozzi, one of the key protagonists of twentieth century architecture in Abruzzo. The book ends with the interview itself, conducted by the author consisting of five questions and issues concerning the relationship between the architect and religion, the legacy of the region of Lombard grain in past centuries, types of sacred space and the opportunities today, in architectural teaching

It is interesting as it presents plant species typical in dry grassland habitats, not present in the surrounding area. In this study, Heteroptera were surveyed in the Nature Reserve and in a bordering giant Miscanthus crop in 2019. The biodiversity of the reserve was well characterized by the presence of species linked to arid environments with steppe or Mediterranean characteristics, like Antheminia lunulata. Four species new for Lombardy were collected, Lygus italicus, Drymus pilipes, Ortholomus punctipennis, and Arenocoris waltlii. Giant Miscanthus hosted only a few ubiquitous species, also collected in the Nature Reserve

Neural Mechanisms Generating Orientation Selectivity in the Retina.

    No full text
The orientation of visual stimuli is a salient feature of visual scenes. In vertebrates, the first neural processing steps generating orientation selectivity take place in the retina. Here, we dissect an orientation-selective circuit in the larval zebrafish retina and describe its underlying synaptic, cellular, and molecular mechanisms. We genetically identify a class of amacrine cells (ACs) with elongated dendritic arbors that show orientation tuning. Both selective optogenetic ablation of ACs marked by the cell-adhesion molecule Teneurin-3 (Tenm3) and pharmacological interference with their function demonstrate that these cells are critical components for orientation selectivity in retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) by being a source of tuned GABAergic inhibition. Moreover, our morphological analyses reveal that Tenm3(+) ACs and orientation-selective RGCs co-stratify their dendrites in the inner plexiform layer, and that Tenm3(+) ACs require Tenm3 to acquire their correct dendritic stratification. Finally, we show that orientation tuning is present also among bipolar cell presynaptic terminals. Our results define a neural circuit underlying orientation selectivity in the vertebrate retina and characterize cellular and molecular requirements for its assembly

Co-presence of black soldier fly frass, soil-biodegradable mulch films, and earthworms: effects on film biodegradation, ecotoxicity, and microbial community

    No full text
Background: Soil-biodegradable mulch films (SBF) are used increasingly to enhance crop yields while addressing soil pollution and disposal issues. Another sustainable practice gaining attention is the use of soil amendments derived from waste, such as insect frass from Hermetia illucens. However, the combined effects of these elements on soil ecotoxicity and microbiota remain unclear. To investigate their impact, an incubation experiment was conducted, testing the presence/co-presence of a commercial SBF (10 g kg−1), H. illucens frass (50 g kg−1), and Eisenia fetida earthworms in 250 g of dry soil, maintained at 50% water-holding capacity. Results: After 22 days, SBF biodegradation reached 9.5% but increased to 62% with H. illucens frass and 52% with E. fetida, indicating that frass altered microbial communities and that earthworms enhanced soil perturbation, accelerating SBF breakdown. Ecotoxicological analysis confirmed that the tested SBF was not harmful to E. fetida, as no mortality or genotoxic damage was observed. Hermetia illucens frass also enhanced earthworm biomass, highlighting its potential as a beneficial soil amendment. The addition of soil-biodegradable mulch film, H. illucens frass, and earthworms altered soil microbial composition and functionality, reducing α diversity but enriching decomposition- and nutrient-cycling taxa like Bacillaceae and Lichtheimiaceae, enhancing soil fertility. Conclusions: These findings highlight potential synergy between insect frass and SBF in promoting soil health and accelerating SBF biodegradation in soil. Future research should focus on optimizing application rates and assessing long-term effects, with particular attention to the potential phytotoxic effects of frass on crops. © 2025 The Author(s).
