    Models of Biological Regulation

    No full text
Metabolism is thought to be robust against multiple types of perturbations since organisms have survived millions of years of selective evolution. Some of the challenges handled by metabolic systems are the transport, transformation and storage of compounds. All biochemical processes in a cell have to occur at physiological conditions, maintain energy levels and tolerate fluctuating environmental conditions. The organization and regulation of these processes is thus of great interest to the field of logistics where solutions to the dynamic control of complex systems are desperately needed. As a basis, the metabolism and transcriptional regulatory network of Escherichia coli, a thoroughly studied experimental model organism, are compared with company networks gleaned from actual production data. A number of results are established: (i) A direct relation between the unit components of the metabolic and logistics systems. This involves the biochemical reactions and manufacturing steps involved with the material flow on the networks, as well as a concept for the regulatory elements. (ii) Potentially beneficial structural elements of metabolic networks are discussed and the composition of few-node subgraphs as one such indicator is explored in E. coli’s metabolic network. (iii) The structure of networks tasked with specific patterns of flow distribution and robust to particular types of local damages are investigated. A clear relation between shared sub-patterns and the occurrence of modular structures is observed. (iv) The large-scale organization of regulation in wild type E. coli and two mutants is confirmed to be dominated by the two counterbalancing aspects of digital (transcriptional) and analog (physico- chemical) control over the course of E. coli’s growth cycle. (v) A case is made for the recording of results as a function of the increasing amount of knowledge available about objects of study

Towards an Understanding of the Relation between Topological Characteristics and Dynamic Behavior in Manufacturing Networks

    No full text
AbstractManufacturing systems can be modeled as networked work systems connected by material flow. Characteristics such as performance and robustness are influenced by the manufacturing network's static structure, i.e. the topology, and its dynamic behavior, i.e. the material flow. The statistical analysis of the topological features of networks has been used in many disciplines to predict dynamic behavior, however, the meaningfulness of each individual topological measure can differ between network types. Therefore, it is necessary to determine which topological measures can be used to evaluate and compare manufacturing networks. This article investigates procedures to identify significant over- or underrepresentation of three-node subgraphs, known as motifs, and the dynamical importance of single nodes in terms of their effect on the largest eigenvalue. The results show that both approaches are suited to indicate dynamical behavior of a manufacturing systems solely based topological information. These techniques can be used for a quick assessment of existing or planned manufacturing systems without extensive and complex modeling

Abstract : A considerable increase in the marketing of pet foods has been observed in recent decades. With a focus on ensuring these foods, this study obtained data on the qualitative and safety of products marketed in different continents, relating the influence of biological contaminants in foods with possible damage to animal health. The initial stages of development and obtaining data were based on the labeling information and certification of regulation compliance, beyond to check the accuracy of the nutritional information of the final packaged product. Regarding the adequacy of layouts dry dog food sold in Brazil, 100 % of the samples were not in accordance with the requirements established by regulation. Respect the check the accuracy of the guarantee levels declared in nutrition labeling of dogs and cats foods, 44 % did not correlate the levels present in food with nutritional levels established warranty and 36 % of the samples were in disagreement with minimum nutritional levels recommended for the maintenance and animal development. The food quality and safety indicators were also evaluated in order to investigate the presence of biological contaminants, including toxic metabolites not previously discussed on pet food (such as light filth and bioactive amines formation). In the study of indicators of hygienic-sanitary conditions of dogs and cats dry food samples, the total counts (bacterial and fungal loads) values were considered acceptable for animal consumption. However, mycotoxigenic fungi were isolated: Aspergillus (A. parasiticus, A. niger and A. ochraceus) and Penicillium (P. expansum). The presence of bacterial agents in dogs and cats food (in which are rich in proteins) may favor the bioactive amines formation (biogenic and polyamines), important indicators of the sanitary conditions applied during the final food production, as can be toxic to animal health. The main biogenic amine detected was histamine (96 %), followed by putrescine and cadaverine (92 %). From the knowledge of biological qualitative profile of dry foods, these data were correlated with different forms of product presentation at point of sale (opened packages and/or sealed) and risks associated with food safety. In evaluation performed to check the marketing conditions in opened packages (open bulk bags) of dogs and birds food, this form of exposure12increased the moisture content and water activity, favoring the toxigenic fungi growth and mycotoxins production. The presence of insects, mites and rodents hair in the final product must also be considered important biological agents carrier (bacteria, fungi and mycotoxins). In the evaluation of dog food sold in sealed packages, 87 % of samples contained some sort of biological light filth (as fragments of insects and mites). Respect to the mycological tests, contamination was observed in all samples, with the presence of genera Aspergillus (80.6 %) and Penicillium (54.8 %), and fumonisin contamination in 32.2 % of samples. From the various data, it was possible to obtain a basis for future discussions and reviews on current standards regulation and tolerance limits established, ensuring animal health consumers. Important to mention that the pet animals diet is based on monotype food, which consumed daily, amplifies the potential exposure to biological contaminants present in the diet

The speed of limit order execution in the Spanish stock exchange

    No full text
The objective of this work is to study empirically the factors influencing the execution time in the Spanish Stock Exchange. Our dataset includes the orders and transactions of the assets belonging to IBEX 35 in the period between July and September 2000. We divide the assets into three sub samples according to their trading activity, and we use an econometric model based on survival analysis to analyze the effect of variables such as the relative inside spread, price aggressiveness, asset volatility and depth. We find that limit orders priced at the quotes or within the quotes have a shorter expected time of execution. The same happens when the asset is more volatile and active. Time of execution is shorter at the beginning and at the end of the trading session depending on the group of the assets considered, and it is longer when the inside bid--ask spread is larger. If the trader takes into account the type of the last order introduced before the order placement we can observe that if the previous order was a market order on the opposite (same) side of the book then the expected time of execution of the new limit order is shorter (longer), while if it was a limit order on the same (opposite) side of the book then it is longer (shorter). Finally, we study the effect of the explanatory variables on the expected time of execution over the different periods of the trading session
