O texto foi publicado pelo autor martinicano em 1963 e encenado a partir de 1964. A história aborda o embate histórico entre os dois líderes revolucionários haitianos, Alexandre Pétion (1770-1818) e Henry Christophe (1767-1820), após o estabelecimento da independência do Haiti, em 1804. O ex-escravizado Henry Christophe I, autoproclamado rei do Haiti em 1811, protagoniza, na peça, os impasses políticos decorrentes do processo de descolonização para a constituição de um novo estado haitiano livre e democrático. Optamos por traduzir a cena que anuncia e ilustra, na abertura do primeiro Ato, o caráter trágico que permeia o desenrolar dos eventos.This contribution proposes the commented translation of the first scene of the play La Tragédie du roi Christophe (The tragedy of King Christophe), by Aimé Césaire. The text was published by the Martinican author in 1963 and staged from 1964 onwards. The story addresses the historical clash between the two Haitian revolutionary leaders, Alexandre Pétion (1770-1818) and Henry Christophe (1767-1820), after the establishment of Haitian independence in 1804. The ex-enslaved Henry Christophe I, self-proclaimed King of Haiti in 1811, stars, in the play, political impasses resulting from the decolonization process, for the constitution of a new free and democratic Haitian state. We chose to translate the scene that announces and illustrates, in the opening of the first Act, the tragic character that permeates the unfolding of events
Workup and management of liver transplantation in alcohol-related liver disease
No full textAlcohol-related liver disease (ALD) represents the most common indication for liver transplantation (LT) worldwide. Outcomes of LT for ALD are comparable with those of LT for other etiologies; however, ALD is still considered a controversial indication for LT, mainly because it is considered a self-inflicted disease with a high risk of return to alcohol use after LT. Pre-LT evaluation criteria have changed over time, with a progressive re-evaluation of the required pre-transplant duration of abstinence. Despite the fact that some transplant programs still require 6 months of abstinence in order to consider a patient suitable for LT, there is increasing evidence that a pre-transplant abstinence period of <6 months can be considered for well-selected patients. Early LT for severe alcohol-related hepatitis that has not responded to medical therapy has been shown to be an effective therapeutic option with high survival benefit when performed within strict and well-recognized criteria. However, high variability in LT access exists for these patients due to the presence of social and medical stigma. A psycho-social assessment, together with an evaluation by an addiction specialist, should be mandatory in patients with ALD who are potential candidates for LT in order to assess the risk of post-transplant return to alcohol use and to ensure good long-term outcomes. Finally, before LT, attention should be paid to the presence of other potential comorbidities (i.e., cardiovascular and neurological diseases), which could represent a potential contraindication to LT. Similarly, after LT, patients should be adequately monitored for the development of cardiovascular events and screened for “de novo” tumors, although standardized protocols for this monitoring do not exist at this time

A Design Tool for Passive Wrist Support
No full textA design tool for passive wrist support using compliant spatial beams as gravity balancer is presented. The aim of this assistive device is to reduce required effort for pronation-supination and flexion-extension by 70% to help patients with muscular weakness keeping their hand’s posture and doing daily tasks, while the forearm is rested. To reach this goal, a setup with three connection points to the user’s hand, and two optimized spatial beams as elastic gravity compensators, are developed. The overall shape and cross-sectional dimensions of the compliant beams are attained using an optimization technique. The objective is reaching a desired endpoint kinetostatic behaviour which is determined based on the hand’s weight and available muscular forces. A design case is presented to show the ability of the method, and the final errors from the desired behaviour are clarified.
