Exploiting the Potential of New Coordination Frameworks for Technological Applications – from Temperature Sensing to Magnetic Storage

    No full text
This PhD work reports on the design, synthesis and characterization of new Coordination Frameworks (CFs), either porous or not, showing magnetic and/or optical properties, to exploit their potential in various technological applications. Particularly, in Chapter 1, the synthesis and characterization of two N-heterocycles substituted anilates, H2trz2An and 3,6-N-(dipyrazolyl-4-carboxylic acid)-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone, is reported. Then, Chapter 2 reports on the synthesis and the complete characterization of magnetic and redox-active anilate-based 3D CFs, obtained by combining H2trz2An with MII = Co, Cu, Mn, Ni and Fe. In Chapter 3, the CoII-trz2An 3D MOF was studied as potential system for CO2 uptake and separation. The static and dynamic adsorption studies revealed that this MOF present a remarkable CO2 adsorption and separation capability from gas mixtures, due to its 3D ultramicroporous structure and the N atoms present in the voids. Chapter 4 reports on the synthesis of 3D ErIII-MOF with H2trz2An linker, showing luminescent and Single Ion Magnet (SIM) properties. These materials have been structurally, magnetically and optically characterized. Furthermore, one of them shows a reversible structural flexibility of the 3D framework that allows a tuning of its physical properties. In Chapter 5, H2trz2An was combined with DyIII, TbIII and HoIII ions, typical building units for SIMs, and the two obtained series with all the LnIII ions were structurally and magnetically characterized. Finally, Chapter 6 reports on the preparation via solvent-free synthesis of YbIII/NdIII mixed CFs, in different stoichiometric ratios, by using 1,3,5-benzentricarboxylic acid (H3BTC) as linker, for applications as ratiometric thermometers in a wide temperature range. The materials were structurally and morphologically characterized, while their photophysics was studied at room temperature and at variable temperature (10-300 K), to test their best thermometers performances. This PhD work reports on the design, synthesis and characterization of novel Coordination Frameworks (CFs), either porous or not, showing magnetic and/or optical properties, to exploit their potential in various technological applications. The design of such materials requires a particular attention in the selection of the molecular building blocks, organic linkers and metal nodes. To construct CFs with different physical properties, carboxylate and anilate derivatives have been chosen. Particularly, among the carboxylates, the 1,3,5-benzentricarboxylic acid (H3BTC, trimesic acid), a biofriendly linker which allows to build robust 3D metal-organic frameworks while within the anilates, the 3,6-ditriazolyl-2,5-dihydroxybenzoquinone was chosen for its potential capability to build 3D supramolecular architectures due to the triazolyl pendant arms at the 3, 6 positions of the benzoquinone moiety, which are electron-donor substituents as well; these substituents in fact may affect the physical properties and the related technological applications. By playing with these two promising linkers in a wise combination with selected d- and f- transition metals, new systems, suitable for a wide range of applications, were obtained. In Chapter 1, the synthesis of two N-heterocycles substituted anilate derivatives, 3,6-N-ditriazolyl-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone and 3,6-N-(dipyrazolyl-4-carboxylic acid)-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone, is reported. Both ligands were characterized by spectroscopic (Raman, FT-IR, UV-Vis and Fluorescence) and electrochemical (Cyclic Voltammetry) techniques. Chapter 2 reports on the synthesis of new magnetic and redox-active anilate-based 3D MOFs, obtained by combining the 3,6-N-ditriazolyl-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone, hereafter 3,6-N-ditriazolyl-Anilato, linker with MII= Co, Cu, Mn, Ni and Fe d-transition metal ions. Structural, Spectroscopic, Magnetic and Electrochemical Characterization is reported for all the obtained materials. In Chapter 3, the CoII-3,6-N-ditriazolyl-Anilato 3D MOF was studied as potential system for CO2 uptake and separation. The static and dynamic adsorption studies revealed that this MOF present a remarkable CO2 adsorption and separation capability from gas mixtures, due to its 3D ultramicroporous structure, with voids X where the N2 atoms of the triazolyl groups show a significant affinity for CO2 molecules and channels that enable the high selective entrance of CO2. Chapter 4 reports on the synthesis of novel flexible 3D Er-based MOF with the 3,6-N-ditriazolyl-Anilato linker, showing luminescent and SIM properties. These materials have been structurally, magnetically and optically characterized. Furthermore, one of them shows a reversible structural flexibility of the 3D framework that allows a challenging tuning of its physical properties. In Chapter 5, the potential of 3,6-N-ditriazolyl-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone as organic linker for LnIII ions was exploited by combining it with DyIII, TbIII and HoIII ions, which are generally employed as building units for Single Ion Magnets (SIMs). As in the previous Chapter, two series with all the LnIII ions were obtained and further characterized, both structurally and magnetically. Finally, Chapter 6 reports on the preparation through a solvent-free synthesis of YbIII/NdIII mixed CFs, in different stoichiometric ratios, by using 1,3,5-benzentricarboxylic acid (H3BTC) as biofriendly organic linker, for biomedical applications as ratiometric thermometers in the physiological temperature range (298-313 k). The materials were structurally and morphologically characterized through XRD and SEM, while their photophysics was studied at room temperature and at variable temperature, in the 10-300 K range, to test their best performances as thermometers

Monet lastensuojeluyksikössä asuvat nuoret oireilevat psyykkisesti, toisten oireilu on voimakasta. Nuoren tilanteen kokonaisvaltainen hoitaminen vaatii eri ammattilaisilta toimivaa yhteistyötä. Many young people living in child protection units are psychologically symptomatic, while others have a high level of symptoms. A holistic approach to the young person's situation requires effective cooperation between different professionals. One of the most important networks for the young person is the network of professionals in child welfare and adolescent psychiatry. A common understanding of the need for support and care is needed to help the young person. Effective collaboration between professionals will help to ensure that the support and care the child receives is as appropriate as possible to the young person's support and care needs. The thesis was carried out as a follow-up to the completed Monni-hanke (2020-2022). The cooperation partners in the thesis were the South Ostrobothnia Specialist Hospital for Adolescent Psychiatry and two special child protection units providing special child protection in South Ostrobothnia. The thesis was carried out using a qualitative research method. The data was collected in four group interviews, two of which were conducted with professionals in youth psychiatry and two with professionals in child protection. A total of 14 (N=14) youth psychiatry professionals and 16 (N=16) child protection professionals participated in the study. The material was analysed using inductive or data-driven content analysis. Content analysis was used to obtain a clear and concise description of the phenomenon under study. The headings of the results are: factors that promote cooperation and factors to be promoted by cooperation. The findings of the thesis were discussed in a development seminar with both adolescent psychiatry (N=7) and child protection professionals (N=7). In the development seminar, the professionals had the opportunity to reflect together on the themes related to promoting cooperation. The ideas generated during the seminar yielded results that were in line with the research question. The thesis highlighted issues that can be addressed by promoting cooperation between child protection and adolescent psychiatry professionals. The thesis and the results of the development seminar will be made available to professionals. In the future, cooperation could be promoted by increasing knowledge about the activities of the other professional group, such as the legislation governing their activities

We report a case of a 17-year-old patient who sustained multiple finger contusions on the left hand. After thorough debridement, the volar and dorsal defects of the middle finger were covered simultaneously with bilobed arterialized venous free flap from the left forearm. The flap was composed of 2 paddles, which were connected by a subcutaneous bridge containing a subcutaneous venous network. The subdermal plexus in the bridge was interrupted with no impairment of blood supply to the second cutaneous paddle. The flap survived completely with only temporary mild venous congestion. Excellent functional and cosmetic result was reached. We consider bilobed arterialized venous free flap as a useful optio

Italian validation of the Approach-avoidance Temperament Questionnaire

    No full text
Our aim is to contribute to the Italian validation of the Approach-Avoidance Temperament Questionnaire (ATQ), an instrument devoted to evaluate approach and avoidance temperaments according to the Approach-Avoidance Temperament Model (Elliot & Thrash, 2002, 2010). We performed an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) in an university students’ pilot sample (Sample 1, n = 98) and a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) in an adults’ convenience sample (Sample 2, n = 360). We evaluated the invariance across gender and education and we explored the convergent validity with the BIS-BAS scale. The ATQ reported an a-priori two-factor structure in the EFA, that was confirmed in the CFA, satisfactory internal reliability, invariance across gender and education and convergence with the BIS-BAS scale. Even though our results await to be confirmed in larger and diversified samples, the ATQ appears to be a valid, reliable and parsimonious instrument to measure approach-avoidance temperaments

Measuring human and Sustainable Development: An Integrated Approach for European Countries

    No full text
During the last few years, sustainable development has represented one of the most important policy goals at global level and how to design specific policy actions, measuring performance and results continues to present a challenge. Scientific research has explored different analysis directions in order to identify a synthetic indicator to evaluate policy planning and achievements that goes beyond traditional income indicators such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In consideration of the social dimension of sustainable development, including health, education and employment, the Human Development Index (HDI) of the United Nations Development Programme represents a widely accepted methodology to be used as a starting point for building a more sustainable-oriented development index. The aim of this paper is to identify a numerical measure of what Amartya Sen defined as “sustainable human development” using a human development framework and adapt it taking into account more specific environmental aspects. For this purpose, building a complex Sustainable Human Development Index (SHDI) may be a difficult task because of data availability and the European countries – especially the European Union - could be a useful pilot area for testing the methodology. The most recent efforts of the EU to standardize statistical information at country level enable us to build more complex indicators, including those with economic, social and environmental dimensions. Long-term sustainability requires the maintenance of capital stock to guarantee constant or growing welfare levels. In a human development perspective, the sustainability condition has been directly analysed on the well-being side, assuming that a constant or growing SHDI could be the result of constant growing capital assets. An SHDI represents the core element of a comparative analysis to assess the effectiveness and the distributional effects of European policies, including environmental actions. Finally, a sensitivity analysis of the results will enable us to underline the key factors of effective sustainable human development and, at the same time test the real meaning of such a modified composite index compared with the existing GDP and HDI.human development, sustainable development, sustainability indicators

FOREIGN ACQUISITIONS OF LAND IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. RISKS, OPPORTUNITIES AND NEW ACTORS

    No full text
The Special Issue focuses on the recent wave of foreign acquisitions of land in developing countries and provides. This essay article reviews the debate, providing an overview of the extent, patterns and origin of investments, and contextualizing the various contributions included in the issue. The main sections are devoted to the determinants of FDI, including the balance between risks and benefits of land internalization, the opportunities and risks of land acquisitions and regulation. The deals involve land usually on a very large scale and predominantly in the context of complex and unclear structures of property rights; weak stakeholders may have insufficient “voice” vis-à-vis their governments; governments may have weak planning and regulatory abilities. The possible risks of increasing investments are associated with property rights and potential dispossession of vulnerable land users, land concentration and lack of transparency in the contracts

In this paper we present an empirical study on the perception of the cooperative firm among entertainment and performing arts workers. In particular, the study is based on workers belonging to associations established during the first pandemic emergency from Covid-19 in 2020. Our study reveals a perception of deterioration of the cooperative model. At the same time, the participants in our research demonstrate a confidence in the ideal cooperative firm and look with interest at new cooperatives in other working sectors. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews and focus groups with cooperative and non-cooperative associated workers
