    Thymoma

    No full text
Thymoma is an epithelial tumor generally considered to have an indolent growth pattern but malignant nonetheless because of potential for local invasion, pleural dissemination, and even systemic metastases. The diagnosis of thymoma is usually made clinically. A thymoma is an incidental finding on a chest radiograph or on chest computed tomography (CT), which appears as a well-defined lobulated mass in the antero-superior mediastinum. CT plays an important role in the management of patients with thymoma. It is often used when thymoma is suspected clinically but not detected on radiography. It provides information on differential diagnosis and on the precise anatomic location of the lesion and its relationship to surrounding structures. Moreover, CT can be used in the presurgical planning providing information on the presence and degree of invasion. It can be used to monitor tumor behavior during chemo- and/or radiation therapy and to detect recurrent or metastatic neoplasm after the treatment has been completed. Thymoma can be staged at the time of surgery on the presence or absence of intact tumor capsule. Computed tomography can be used to differentiate normal thymus and thymoma or other thymic neoplasms. Complete surgical resection is the mainstay of therapy for thymomas and is the most important predictor of long-term survival. © 2008 Elsevier Inc

Dynamic Mixed Reality Assembly Guidance Using Optical Recognition Methods

    No full text
Augmented (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR) technologies are enablers of the Industry 4.0 paradigm and are spreading at high speed in production. Main applications include design, training, and assembly guidance. The latter is a pressing concern, because assembly is the process that accounts for the biggest portion of total cost within production. Teaching and guiding operators to assemble with minimal effort and error rates is pivotal. This work presents the development of a comprehensive MR application for guiding novice operators in following simple assembly instructions. The app follows innovative programming logic and component tracking in a dynamic environment, providing an immersive experience that includes different guidance aids. The application was tested by experienced and novice users, data were drawn from the performed experiments, and a questionnaire was submitted to collect the users' perception. Results indicate that the MR application was easy to follow and even gave confidence to inexperienced subjects. The guidance support was perceived as useful by the users, though at times invasive in the field of view. Further development effort is required to draw from this work a complete and usable architecture for MR application in assembly, but this research forms the basis to achieve better, more consistent instructions for assembly guidance based on component tracking

Enhancing Industrial Mobile Manipulators Through Cognitive Digital Twins

    No full text
The paper discusses the design and implementation of a cognitive digital twin (CDT) to enhance the capabilities of autonomous industrial mobile manipulator (AIMM) in industrial settings. The integration of data in CDT facilitates enhanced positioning, even in the presence of obstacles, and optimized recharging schedules. The use of external sensors significantly improves the robot’s accuracy. The implementation of ML models facilitates intelligent planning of charging stops and minimizing downtime. This enhancement is achieved by creating a virtual representation of the physical system that incorporates cognitive capabilities, such as reasoning, learning, and planning. The study demonstrates the potential of CDTs to serve as advanced tools for decision-making, optimization, and predictive maintenance in industrial settings. The results also highlight the challenges in developing CDTs, particularly the need for high fidelity in replicating the physical system and the environment

Complete spontaneous remission of non-small-cell lung cancer: a case report

    No full text
Spontaneous remission (SR) of cancer is a rare event, particularly in Lung cancer. We report the case of a 68-year-old man, who came to our attention with a diagnosis of poorly differentiated pulmonary adenocarcinoma and, in absence of any active therapy, underwent a durable complete SR. Our case supports the rare occurrence of SR in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). (C) 2004 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
