Le lettere inedite di Michele Della Torre a Giovanni Della Casa (1547-1549) conservate nei mss. Vat. Lat. 14.834-14.835
Le epistole conservate nei manoscritti Vat. Lat. 14.834-35, di pertinenza dellacasiana, sono state tradizionalmente connesse al nome di Giovanni Bianchetti, patrizio bolognese a noi pressoché sconosciuto, identificato come “agente romano” di Della Casa negli anni della nunziatura a Venezia (1544-1549). A seguito di uno studio autoptico condotto sui due volumi vaticani, sono emerse nuove lettere di altri corrispondenti, tra le quali spiccano quelle firmate da Michele Della Torre, vescovo di Ceneda e nunzio apostolico in Francia dal settembre 1547 all’agosto 1550. Queste missive, fino a oggi inedite, hanno statuto di originali e si presentano in buono stato di conservazione. Esse ci consegnano importanti informazioni relative alle fallimentari trattative intraprese da Francia, Stato pontificio, Venezia e Svizzeri per la costituzione di una lega in prospettiva antimperiale; inoltre, queste lettere indirizzate a Della Casa ci forniscono note interessanti inerenti alle strategie belliche attuate nell’ambito degli scontri tra Inglesi, Scozzesi e Francesi in ragione del cosiddetto brutale corteggiamento. Per quanto queste epistole si dimostrino una preziosa testimonianza per approfondire le relazioni diplomatiche intercorse tra il Regno di Francia, la Corte farnesiana e la Serenissima in anni tanto delicati, occorre sottolineare il fatto che Della Torre sembri rivolgersi a Della Casa soprattutto per chiedere uffici e mantenere i contatti con l’ambiente veneziano.Letters in manuscripts Vat. Lat. 14.834-35 have been usually connected to Giovanni Bianchetti, a noble man from Bologna who is identified as one of the trusted men of Giovanni Della Casa in Rome during apostolic nuntiature in Venice (1544-1549). After a systematic study of these two volumes, 28 new letters were rediscovered. These unpublished documents are well preserved and authentic, signed by Michele Della Torre, bishop of Ceneda and nuncio in France from september 1547 to august 1550. The main subject in these letters is the hard negotiation between the Kingdom of France, the Papal State, the Republic of Venice and the Swiss Confederacy in order to form a new alliance against Charles V. Moreover, these letters give information about war strategies put in place during the Rough Wooing. Although letters can be considered significant proof of diplomatic relations among Valois, the Farnese family and the Serenissima, we need to notice how Michele Della Torre, writing to Della Casa, especially wanted to entrust tasks to him and keep in contact with Venice’s scenario
MgO nanoparticles synthesized starting from an innovative one-step process
Nanosized MgO is a functional material showing a great promise as destructive adsorbent for toxic chemical agents, unique optical electronic, magnetic, thermal, and mechanical properties, as well as in good bactericidal performance in aqueous environments and in the cancer therapy. In this study, MgO nanoparticles are obtained by thermal decomposition of nanosized Mg(OH)2, which are synthesized by means of an innovative, time and cost-effective, scalable, and patented method. The nanoparticles are characterized by means of several techniques such as thermal analyses, X-ray diffraction analysis, infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and surface area measurements (BET). After a pseudomorphic decomposition of the hydroxide precursor, pure and crystalline MgO nanoparticles are obtained. These nanoparticles are roughly spherical, monodispersed, and monocrystalline, having size ≤10 nm. Moreover, they exhibited a surface area up to 178 m2/g, revealing a bimodal mesoporous distribution with the important part of the pores with dimensions peaked at 4.87 nm

Recombinant human antibodies specific for hepatitis C virus proteins
Human antibodies to hepatitis C virus core, NS4A and NS3 were cloned in a prokaryotic vector and expressed as soluble Fab fragments and as phage-displayed Fabs. The recombinant Fabs were shown to be a suitable tool fo rimmunohistochemistry, since they recognize the cognate antigen expressed in mammalian cells. The nucleotide sequence of the cDNA for the variable domains of these antibodies was determined and the V-gene usage was derived. On the basis of the deduced amino acid sequence, a structural model of the V domains of the Fabs was constructed
Characterization and Antimicrobial Properties of Essential Oils from Four Wild Taxa of Lamiaceae Family Growing in Apulia
Four taxa of the Lamiaceae family growing in Apulia (Clinopodium suaveolens, Satureja montana subsp. montana, Thymbra capitata, and Salvia fruticosa subsp. thomasii) that had not been previously studied for their potential use in the food sector, were analyzed for their essential oils (EOs) composition and antioxidant and antimicrobial properties against some microorganisms, isolated from bread and bakery products, including molds (Aspergillus niger, Penicillium roqueforti) and spore-forming bacteria (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and Bacillus subtilis). Two different sites were considered for each plant species, and the strongest antimicrobial EOs, which were active against all of the microorganisms tested, were those from one S. montana subsp. montana sample (Sm2) and both T. capitata EOs (Tc1 and Tc2) with Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) values ranging between 0.093% and 0.375% (v/v) against molds, while higher values were registered for bacteria (0.75–1%). In particular, the biological activity of EOs from T. capitata and S. montana subsp. montana was maybe due to the high amount of thymol and carvacrol, which were also responsible for the highest antioxidant activity. S. fruticosa subsp. thomasii EOs had different chemical profiles but showed only a slight antibacterial effect and no antifungal activity. C. suaveolens showed no significant changes between EOs with an interesting antifungal activity (MIC 0.093%÷0.187% v/v), which may be due to the presence of pulegone. These plant species can be considered as promising sources of bioactive compounds to be exploited as biopreservatives in bread and bakery products mainly considering the low concentration needed to inhibit microorganism’s growth
Nano Ca(OH)2 synthesis using a cost-effective and innovative method: Reactivity study
Ca(OH)2 nanoparticles in hydro-alcoholic dispersion (nanolime) are currently used for eco-compatible treatments of carbonate-based substrates in the field of Cultural Heritage conservation. Unfortunately, at present nanolime is synthesized by processes which present some drawbacks (considerable cost, multiple steps, low specific production yield), thus limiting the potential of its applications. We have developed a single-step procedure, based on an ion exchange process, making it possible to produce pure and crystalline Ca(OH)2 nanoparticles easily in water, at room temperature and ambient pressure, starting from cheap or renewable reactants. The simplicity of the process and its time- and energy-saving aspects are very promising factors for extending the production from laboratory to industrial scale. The aim of this paper is to investigate the structural and morphological features of the nanoparticles produced and to analyze the influence of crucial parameters of the synthesis process (i.e., time, water usage, reagent concentration and reaction volume) on the nanoparticles’ characteristics. The nanolime produced is investigated by XRD, FTIR, TEM, and AFM techniques. The nanoparticle reactivity in the carbonation process is also investigated, by varying the suspension concentration, the solvent and relative humidity conditions. Pure, crystalline, and very reactive Ca(OH)2 nanoparticles are obtained.
