    Probing 7-branes on orbifolds

D3 branes in the vicinity of an E6, E7, or E8 stack of 7-branes in flat space are known to host at low energy a famous class of strongly-coupled N = 2 superconformal field theories featuring exceptional global symmetry. What if, instead, the 7-branes wrap an orbifold? We give a systematic characterization of such theories in the case of C2/Zn, and determine their main properties, like global symmetries, spectra of Coulomb-branch operators, and patterns of Higgs-branch flows. We put forward a set of rules to construct their magnetic quivers, which directly generalize what happens in the perturbative case, and later derive them using the duality with M5 branes probing M9 walls

Abstract We study families of deformed ADE surfaces by probing them with a D2-brane in Type IIA string theory. The geometry of the total space X of such a family can be encoded in a scalar field Φ, which lives in the corresponding ADE algebra and depends on the deformation parameters. The superpotential of the probe three dimensional (3d) theory incorporates a term that depends on the field Φ. By varying the parameters on which Φ depends, one generates a family of 3d theories whose moduli space always includes a geometric branch, isomorphic to the deformed surface. By fibering this geometric branch over the parameter space, the total space X of the family of ADE surfaces is reconstructed. We explore various cases, including when X is the universal flop of length ℓ = 1, 2. The effective theory, obtained after the introduction of Φ, provides valuable insights into the geometric features of X, such as the loci in parameter space where the fiber becomes singular and, more notably, the conditions under which this induces a singularity in the total space. By analyzing the monopole operators in the 3d theory, we determine the charges of certain M2-brane states arising in M-theory compactifications on X

The paper considers the origin of the Phocidian federal state and, in particular, its internal organization, to highlight the changes from the Classical period to the Hellenistic Age. It aims to demonstrate that the third century is characterized by a substantial continuity with the previous period, while the most significant changes can be seen in the second century

Does the iodized salt therapy of pregnant mothers increase the children IQ? Empirical evidence of a statistical study based on permutation tests

The nutritional iodine deficiency disorders are still a major health problem in industrialized countries, but they are completely preventable by means of iodine prophylaxis. Iodine is essential for thyroid hormone (TH) synthesis and TH is required for normal brain development. Gestational iodine supplementation may improve infant cognitive development. In this study we aimed at evaluating the intelligence quotient of children born to mothers with different levels of iodine supplementation, with or without the administration of levothyroxine (LT4), prior to and during pregnancy. In particular we focused our attention on some mother–child pairs and we compared them according to iodized salt consumption and LT4 treatment. In this specific context, NPC test was applied to compare four groups of children, defined on the basis of maternal history related to iodized salt consumption and LT4 treatment. The results show that the deficit in functionality cognitive (in terms of intelligence quotient) is significantly higher in the children of mothers that does not make supplementation of iodized salt. This shows how a lack of iodine can hinder children in reaching their full intellectual potential. From a methodological point of view, our research showed the utility of the Non Parametric Combination test (NPC test) into analyze data concerning medical research

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Aiace e Cassandra nella tradizione locrese

The study explores the existence and the meaning of a hero cult dedicated to Aiax Oileus on the part of Lokroi. This tradition involves a rehabilitation of the hero through the atonement of the violence perpetrated against Athena and Cassandra during the last night of Troy and is part of the propaganda produced by Lokroi Epizephyrioi in the years following the battle of Sagra. Aiax is portrayed as a hero with powers of healing, similar to Achilles: his new role culminates in the miraculous healing of the chief of Kroton army defetead in the battle of Sagra, wich took place in the island of Leuke in the presence of the royal couple, Achilles and Helen

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
