The fact of pure reason: the foundation of the categorical imperative in Kant's critique of practical reason

    No full text
The aim of this paper is to discuss why and how the teory of the factum of pure reason in the critique of practical reason replaces the deduction of the categorical imperative given a few years earlier in the groundwork of the metaphysics of morals. To that purpose I propoose an interpretation as to why Kant rejects the possibility of giving a deduction of the categorical imperative in the critique of practical reason. I focus then on Kant's factum theory and the argue that it does give a justification for the categorical imperative. This justification should be understood, however, as a practical justification because it does not explain the theoretical ground for the validity of the moral law, but relies on the very fact that to act entails awareness of our obligation through moral feeling.Fil: Moledo, Fernando. Boundaries and contradictions of pure reason, between the Dissertatio (1770) and the Critique of pure reason (1781)

In this paper I claim that it is possible to find a particular stage in the development of the Antinomy of pure reason, understand as a conflict of reason whit itself. This stage is placed between 1770 and 1781 and consists in a conflict which arises in reason itself but between the functions that later will be assigned to pure understanding and pure reason in strict sense.Fil: Moledo, Fernando. Die Kantische Auffassung des Menschen als Zweck der Schöpfung

    No full text

    Get PDF
In the preface to the first edition of the Critique of Pure Reason Kant refers to two deductions of the categories: the objective and the subjective deduction (KrV, A XVII). This well-known reference possesses several problems of interpretation and has been widely addressed in the specialized literature. Regarding this reference, the accepted interpretation is that both deductions refer to two different tasks of one and the same deduction: the transcendental deduction of the categories. There is nevertheless a widely overlooked passage in the Critique of Pure Reason that suggests a different interpretation on the issue. This passage is to be found in the transcendental Dialectic in the context of the discussion about the possibility of a deduction of the transcendental ideas (KrV, A 336/B 393). According to this passage I will argue in this paper that the objective deduction of the categories corresponds to the transcendental deduction of the categories while the subjective deduction of these concepts corresponds to the metaphysical one.Fil: Moledo, Fernando.

    Get PDF
In the Critique of Pure Reason Kant criticizes Baumgarten´s definition of Metaphysics as the science of the first principles of human knowledge (Metaphysica § 1). He maintains that this definition doesn´t consider the distinction between sensible and pure knowledge. Instead of this definition Kant provides a new one in the first Critique: Metaphysics is the system of pure Reason (A 841 / B 869). This Definition is first anticipated eleven years before in the Inaugural Dissertation, where Metaphysics is defined as pure Philosophy (MSI AA 2: 411). Kant presents this Dissertation as a proof of the propaedeutic which must precede Metaphysics and so anticipates the idea that will be fully accomplished with the Critique of Pure Reason. In this paper I will argue that the new definition of Metaphysics in the Inaugural Dissertation must be seen as the very important result of this text as a propaedeutic to Metaphysics and as a specific step in the development of the Critique of Pure Reason.Fil: Moledo, Fernando.

    Get PDF
Fil: Moledo, Fernando. Substantiality of the Soul and Objective Validity of the Categories: Kant’s Transcendental Logic in the Middle of the Silent Decade (ca. 1775)

The aim of this paper is to establish the argument that Kant develops in the Reflections of the Duisburger-Nachlass (ca. 1775) regarding the Objective Validity of the Categories and to evaluate the development of the Transcendental Logic reached at that moment. I claim that at this point Kant still considers the possibility of knowing the Substantiality of the Soul, making impossible the identification of the development of the Transcendental Logic reached by the middle 1770 with that of the KrV. Nevertheless I argue that the argument that Kant develops in Reflections of the Year 1775 rests upon the fundamental idea that Kant will later place at the basis of the Transcendental Deduction of the Categories in the KrV. The main claim of this paper about the development of the Transcendental Logic is that by the middle 1770 Kant had already reached the essential ideas of the first part of the Transcendental Logic: The Transcendental Analytic.Fil: Moledo, Fernando.
