Therapy of parapneumonic empyema in children: a protocol for a scoping review of the literature

    No full text
Background: Empyema (the presence of pus in the pleural space) is a severe complication of community-acquired pneumonia and significant cause of morbidity, but, fortunately, not mortality in children. Between 0.6 and 2% of pneumonias are complicated by empyema and the three main pathogens involved are Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus and group A Streptococcus 1,2,3,4. Optimal management in children, especially the choice of antibiotics, method of administration and duration of therapy, pleural dranage or surgery, are still a matter of debate and currently, lack of strong specific recommendations. This paper displays the study protocol for a scoping review that aims to summarize the available literature on the microbiological epidemiology, the medical and surgical treatment options, and the outcomes of pleural empyema in pediatric population. Methods: Comprehensive research combining the terms pediatric (children aged 0 to 18 years) and pleural empyema will be performed on PubMed and SCOPUS to identify all eligible studies. At first, two reviewers will screen the abstract and then their full text to determine the articles that meet the inclusion criteria. This work will be carried out independently, everyone on a different Excel spreadsheet and each researcher will be blinded to the decision of the other researcher. When the process is completed, in case of discordance, any disagreement will be identified and resolved through discussion or with help of a third author. Dissemination: The findings of this review will be published in a peer-reviewed journal

Centrifugal/Centripetal Movements: Placelessness and the Subversive Tactics of Mobility in Ernest Hemingway and Jabra Ibrahim Jabra

    No full text
Compares perspectives on exile in Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast, The Sun Also Rises, and A Farewell to Arms to Palestinian author J. I. Jabra’s The Ship (1970), In Search of Walid Masound (1978), and Hunters in a Narrow Street (1960), focusing on issues of place and motion. Qabaha explains that while Hemingway celebrates the mobility and freedom of the modern American exile, Jabra associates exile with displacement and rejection. Explores how Hemingway’s characters revel in their expatriation as opposed to Jabra’s who, forced into exile, long to be reunited with their Palestinian historical-cultural roots

    Hyper-Study: On Our Becoming-Students

    No full text
International audienceAbstract Drawing insight from a creative and reflective experimentation called Studium (2019–) run by the author and the artist François Deck, this text attempts to define a theoretical conception of “studying” that overcomes the narrow contexts of institutional education or professional research, determined mostly by rules set by the market or the state. Through the proposal of an expanded notion of study, it aims at reclaiming the collective situations of intellectual inquiry in front of a shared problem by which we all “become students.” To sketch the idea of “hyper-study,” the reflection needs to take into consideration several implications of this kind of gestures: (1) the subjective engagement that transforms one’s own form of life (transfiguration); (2) the open, situated, and precarious activity (immediation); and (3) the specific environmental conditions (ecological agency)

The myth of water in folktales based on the Abu Moslem Name and the Geran e Habashi

Folk literature is the best manifestation of archetypes. Folk tales and legends have been told over the centuries in the form of archetypes. The connection of mythology with literature has made it one of the archetypes in literature, one of these archetypes is the myth of water which is considered to be the essence of existence in sacred texts mythical narrations, and all civilizations. The present article analyzes the positive manifestations of Tarsusi (Abu Moslem Name and Geran e Habashi.) Water myth positively indicates fertility and negatively indicates death and nothingness. Maternal interpretations of water symbols with feminine letters are associated with the influence of water in mythological stories with sacred and godly heroes like Abu Moslem and Geran e Habashi. The legendary power of water purification purifies the hero to reach the symbolic paradise which is the beginning of the seven spells of the Geran e Habashi and with the entry of the Geran into the water and her departure from the Solomon garden which is a symbol of paradise can be expressed. However, Abu Moslem Name has a historical aspect and is based on facts and dominance of magic in it is very low compared to Joneyd Name and Geran e Habash, but the author has incorporated a few parts of the story into with craft and the mention of spells which is manifested af spells which are manifested by blowing in the spells of witches around the spring

In this article published in 1900, the author argues for a definitive exploration of the Juba region, recriminating the lack of interest shown over the years by Italy while describing British action in the area

The Formation of Intimate Partnerships among Ethnic Minority Youth in Denmark: Generational Relationships & Religious Endogamy

    No full text
The project was by conducted by the author and researchers from the Danish National Institute of Social Research Institute and draws upon a survey data (N=628) and qualitative interviews (N=61). The participants in the study are youth and parents belonging to the five biggest ethnic minority groups in Denmark, immigrants from Turkey, former Yugoslavia, and Pakistan, and refugees from Lebanon and Somalia.. 87% of the youth had answered that their religion is Islam and 7% had answered Christianity. The theoretical framework is broadly speaking social psychological, which combines the theories of modernization, generational relations in the family with effects of discrimination. The article indicates that the patterns related to religious endogamy affect the interaction between the minority and the majority population. The latest research from the United Kingdom showing similar patterns and paradoxical findings about the openness of British youth and the continued practice of religious endogamy among the Asian youth especially Muslims, adds a comparative perspective to the paper. The findings are seen in several ethic groups in the Nordic countries. Research in the Nordic countries further supports such a comparative perspective. Contrary to the wide spread beliefs that there are just serious conflicts between generations, findings of this research project indicate that there are differential patterns: parents can be cooperative or in opposition, depending on a number of factors e.g. their perception of how intimate partnerships are formed by Danish youth. The article presents a critique of the existing concept of the reductionistic either own choice or parental choice, and appeals for a broader concept, which focuses on both own choice and parental accept

Limited-view light sheet fluorescence microscopy for three dimensional volume imaging

    No full text
We propose and demonstrate a limited-view light sheet microscopy (LV-LSM) for three dimensional (3D) volume imaging. Realizing that longer and frequent image acquisition results in significant photo-bleaching, we have taken limited angular views (18 views) of the macroscopic specimen and integrated with maximum likelihood (ML) technique for reconstructing high quality 3D volume images. Existing variants of light-sheet microscopy require both rotation and translation with a total of approximately 10-fold more views to render a 3D volume image. Comparatively, LV-LSM technique reduces data acquisition time and consequently minimizes light-exposure by many-folds. Since ML is a post-processing technique and highly parallelizable, this does not cost precious imaging time. Results show noise-free and high contrast volume images when compared to the state-of-the-art selective plane illumination microscopy. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC
