Research fronts in library and information science in Spain

    No full text
Publications and author cocitations in library and information science in Spain during the period from 1985 to 1994 were analyzed as a measure of the structure, specificity and composition of research fronts in this country. A cocitation matrix developed from an ad hoc database was subjected to cluster analysis, multidimensional scaling and principal components analysis, The resulting cocitation maps identified specific areas of r~search and their knowledge bases. We inferred the degree of consolidation of the discipline of library and information science, and of the subdisciplines informetrics, librarianship and university affiliation, from the research activities revealed. In this respect, the conclusions from the study show the existence of several research fronts in Spanish literature the contents of which are in most cases difficult to compare with those in other countries. A lesser degree of maturity of research in this field is shown

Biomedical scientific publication patterns in the Scopus database : a case study of Andalusia, Spain

    No full text
This paper characterises scientific output in biomedicine in Andalusia, and Spain as a whole, and conduct a first-time comparison to Europe- and world-wide production. The data were extracted from the Scopus database. Three families of indicators are explored to analyse research quantity, quality and collaboration. The results show an upward trend on biomedical output in Andalusia. Over 50 % was in clinical medicine, whose growth doubled the basic medicine. We found greater than nationwide specialisation in biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology, immunology and microbiology, and pharmacology, while psychology proved to be the most prominent emerging area. The publication in most cited journals together with national and international collaboration enhanced research visibility. More citable papers were published on basic than clinical medicine, and the number of citations received by the former was also larger. The higher citation rate in basic medicine may also be explained by the bigger percentage of papers published in international instead domestic journals. Hence, publication patterns would appear to affect research visibility. The methodology proposed may provide guidance for public policy makers to improve, encourage and intensify good biomedical research practice

Showing the essential science structure of a scientific domain and its evolution

Category cocitation and its representation through social networks is proving to be a very adequate technique for the visualization and analysis of great scientific domains. Its combination with pathfinder networks using pruning values r=∞and q=n−1 makes manifest the essence of research in the domain represented, or what we might call the `most salient structure'. The possible loss of structural information, caused by aggressive pruning in peripheral areas of the networks, is overcome by creating heliocentric maps for each category. The depictions obtained with this procedure become tools of great usefulness in view of their capacity to reveal the evolution of a given scientific domain over time, to show differences and similarities between different domains, and to suggest possible new lines for development. This article presents the scientogram of the United States for the year 2002, identifying its essential structure. We also show the scientograms of China for the years 1990 and 2002, in order to study its particular national evolution. Finally, we try to detect patterns and tendencies in the three scientograms that would allow one to predict or flag the evolution of a scientific domain

Juan Pérez de Moya became known in the Iberian Peninsula because of the publication of his Arithmetica Practica, y Speculativa; however, he was also the author of an interesting geometric work which has not yet been disseminated. In this article we focus on the characteristics, evolution and methodology of the texts which Moya devoted to geometry, revealing the goals he intended to reach with each of them, the subjects he dealt with, and the works he used as references. The comparison we established with some of the best known mathematical works of the Renaissance allowed us to identify the main sources of Moya, and to evaluate the extent of their impact on the preparation of Moya’s texts. The revisions implemented by Moya in his geometries, until reaching an effective compromise between practice and theory, reaffirms him as a practical geometer with theoretical concerns, and as the main disseminator of Euclid’s Elements in XVIth century Spain.

Abstract: Grounded in Claudio Willer’s (2013) and João Pedro George’s (2013) concepts of accursed author, this article analyzes Horacio Castellanos Moya’s writing in Asco: Thomas Bernhard em San Salvador (2013). The goals are to place Castellanos Moya as a contemporary and how to connect the work to that point,  accursed author while mobilizing geographically and temporally the category of accursed author through the variables originality, marginalization and the national issue; and the aim is to discuss Latin America’s scope in the matters of challenging what means to exist literally, taking as theoretical base the traditional query repertoire that usually guides the Literary Studies, thus using authors as Jonathan Culler (1999) and Terry Eagleton (1985). The article also aims to discuss identities in Latin America and also the power of literature as a world narrative and thinking about the subject\u27s relationship with his country

Because of the pathological process in the patient vessels we can observe narrowing or occlusion of distal part of internal carotid artery and proximal part of anterior and medial cerebral artery, which is characteristic for this disease. The disease occurs most often among asian women and it usually affects patients in their first decade of life or 3-4 decade. Case presentation: Four year old female suffered from headaches, dizziness as well as progressive paroxysmal hemiparesis and speech disorder. The symptoms were recurrent and lasted for two years. MRI and MRA were performed and revealed pathological changes in arteries of scull base and pathological collateral arteries, characteristic for moyamoya disease. Surgical treatment: Multiple burr hole surgery was performed. Holes were made in the left fronto-temporo-parietal area, peritoneal straps were inserted into the subarachnoidal area in order to start revascularization process. Conclusion: Presented technique is preferred among children suffering from moya moya disease because of the safety of the technique and good treatment effects. There is no need to perform by-pass surgery which is also considered as big advantage of presented technique

A Connectionist and Multivariate Approach to Science Maps: Som, Clustering and Mds Applied to Library & Information Science Research.

    No full text
The visualization of scientific field structures is a classic of scientometric studies. This paper presents a domain analysis of the library and information science discipline based on author co-citation analysis (ACA) and journal cocitation analysis (JCA). The techniques used for map construction are the self-organizing map (SOM) neural algorithm, Ward’s clustering method and multidimensional scaling (MDS). The results of this study are compared with similar research developed by Howard White and Katherine McCain [1]. The methodologies used allow us to confirm that the subject domains identified in this paper are, as well, present in our study for the corresponding period. The appearance of studies pertaining to library science reveals the relationship of this realm with information science. Especially significant is the presence of the management on the journal maps. From a methodological standpoint, meanwhile, we would agree with those authors who consider MDS, the SOM and clustering as complementary methods that provide representations of the same reality from different analytical points of view. Even so, the MDS representation is the one offering greater possibilities for the structural representation of the clusters in a set of variables
