Carex modesti (Cyperaceae), a new species from southern Tanzania

    No full text
A new species of Carex (Cyperaceae), Carex modesti, is described from southern Tanzania. It grows on stream sides and peat bogs at about 2750 m in the Kitulo Plateau. It is morphologically distinct from the similar species C. vallis-rosetto by its creeping rhizomes, coriaceous leaves and solitary spikes arising in each node. Carex modesti is included in Carex sect. Spirostachyae subsect. Elatae together with other Carex species from the tropical African mountains

Social capital and plural identities in migrants and refugees: between diasporas and entrepreneurship

    No full text
Researches in the field of migration have highlighted the different roles played by the communities of origin and the ones of resettlement in the purpose of promoting newcomers’ social integration (Erikkson et al. 2018; Bereins et al. 2007; Calhoun 2010). In particular identity - defined as “the product of the relationship among different actors (people, organizations, artefacts, speeches) along axes of self and hetero-recognition and through various ontological dimensions (individual, professional, national and organizational ethnic” (Talamo, Roma, 2007 pp. 14) - is pivotal in the attempt of understanding how social capital is exploited in the integration process. Social relationships, distinguished on the basis of the social identity category, produce three types of social capital: the bonding, bridging and linking social capital (Putnam, 1999; Sretzer, Woolcock, 2004). The present study has involved migrant and refugee business people that, beside being part of national diasporas, have started enterprises aimed at fostering newcomers’ social capital. In order to explore participants’ plural identities, narrative interviews have been carried out together with a questionnaire aimed at analysing their (social) ego network. Preliminary results have shown that the experiences participants have made in the field of diasporas and entrepreneurship modulates the creation and exploitation of bonding, bridging and linking social capital. Results will be discussed according to the current theories on social capital and plural identities

A common repertoire of autoantibodies is shared by cancer and autoimmune disease patients: Inflammation in their induction and impact on tumor growth

    No full text
The repertoire of autoantibodies found in cancer patients partly overlaps with that typical of patients with autoimmune diseases. Beside the biochemical and immunological properties of the target antigens and their altered expression in tumor tissues, the intratumoral inflammatory context can play a key role in the induction of autoimmune disease-associated autoantibodies in cancer patients. Furthermore, the impact of such antibodies on cancer growth and progression can be deeply influenced by the interplay with inflammation. The characterization of the spontaneous humoral responses occurring in cancer patients, of the mechanisms that trigger and sustain the autoantibody response and of the biological effects of such autoantibodies may help the rational design of anti-cancer immunotherapeutic protocols

Breaking of ground-state symmetry in core-excited ethylene and benzene

    No full text
The observation of C-H bending, and C-C and C-H stretching vibrational levels in high-resolution C 1s-1π* photoabsorption spectra of ethylene and benzene demonstrates that, within the validity of the Franck-Condon principle, both molecules have broken symmetry in this core-excited state. A simple model based on the antibonding character of the π* electron, and on the local rehibridization of the bonding orbitals on the excited C atom, is utilized to explain our observations and to show that both core-excited molecules become nonplanar. Our results also show that the core hole is localized on the excited carbon atom

Novel Features of Potassium and Sodium Vibrations on Copper Surfaces Observed by High-Resolution Electron-Energy-Loss Spectroscopy

    No full text
High-resolution electron-energy-loss spectra of alkali metals adsorbed on Cu show three unexpected features: the adsorbate-substrate stretching frequency does not change with coverage, within 1 meV on Cu(111) and Cu(110), in agreement with the covalent picture of chemisorption; the spectra show an unusual overtone which is interpreted as a consequence of a strongly non linear relationship between the surface dipole moment and the adsorbate-substrate distance; the dynamical dipole moment is strongly coverage dependent.

The interaction of tenascin-C with fibronectin modulates the migration and specific metalloprotease activity in human mesothelioma cell lines of different histotype

    No full text
Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is a tumor with local invasive behaviour. Tenascin-C (TN-C) with fibronectin (FN) are associated extracellular matrix (ECM) molecules frequently neo-expressed in stromal remodeling during neoplastic progression, mostly at the invasive edge of these tumors. Tenascin-C alone or in association with other ECM molecules, could play an important role in the process of tumor invasion, acting as substrate for movement or modulating the migration on FN or promoting the degradation of ECM. Three mesothelioma cell lines of different histotype were analysed for the adhesive capacity on TN-C. The haptotactic activity on TN and the TN modulation of migration on a substrate of FN were analysed by a Boyden modified chamber. The effects of TN on proteolytic activity was evaluated by zymography. None of the lines adhered to tenascin. TN-C was not haptotactic for the three cell lines. Soluble or solid TN reduced the migration on FN of epithelial (E-MM) and sarcomatous cell line (S-MM), whereas enhanced the movement of a byphasic cell line (B-MM). When the cells were pretreated with anti-integrin blocking antibodies we observed a different pattern of inhibition of migration on FN respect to FN plus TN. Finally, no difference of metalloprotease (MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-7, MMP-9) activity was observed between cells plated on FN and on FN plus TN, except for B-MM which showed an increased MMP-7 activity when TN was added to FN. Although TN is not a substrate for movement of MM cell lines, it interacts with FN by modulating differently the migration, according to the different histotype and to the integrin involved, and increasing specific metalloprotease activity

Scritture iniziali e legislazione - M. Modesti: 1. Introduzione; 4. Conclusioni - A. Zuffrano: 2. Considerazioni paleografich
