Toward a Taxonomy and Computational Models of Abnormalities in Images

    No full text
The human visual system can spot an abnormal image, and reason about what makes it strange. This task has not received enough attention in computer vision. In this paper we study various types of atypicalities in images in a more comprehensive way than has been done before. We propose a new dataset of abnormal images showing a wide range of atypicalities. We design human subject experiments to discover a coarse taxonomy of the reasons for abnormality. Our experiments reveal three major categories of abnormality: object-centric, scene-centric, and contextual. Based on this taxonomy, we propose a comprehensive computational model that can predict all different types of abnormality in images and outperform prior arts in abnormality recognition.Peer reviewe

The aim of this research is to look at the representation of friendship in the film Mencuri Raden Saleh using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The film Mencuri Raden Saleh, written by Angga Dwimas Sasongko, was released on August 22 2022. This research is focused on identifying and exploring the representation of friendship in the visual presentation of the film Mencuri Raden Saleh, which is 2 hours 30 minutes long. This research will use Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis, critical research paradigm, and qualitative research approach. Primary data is film observations, and secondary data is a literature study. To test the validity of the data, the triangulation method was used. The author found twelve scenes in the film Mencuri Raden Saleh that represent friendship. They are ranked based on characteristics of friendship, such as acceptance (acceptance) in friendship, pleasure (enjoyment) in interaction, trust (confidence) in the friend's self, and mutual assistance (helping each other). The researcher hopes that the results of this research will help readers understand the meaning of the film Mencuri Raden Saleh better and provide additional information to other film semiotics researchers, especially those who use Roland Barthes' semiotics

    Transgender as a Humanitarian Category

    No full text
Abstract In this article, the author foregrounds transgender as a useful category of analysis to shed light on the issue of gender variance and its articulations within the encounter between Syrian queer and gender-variant refugees and the humanitarian-asylum complex. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted with Syrian queer and gender-variant refugees in Istanbul in 2014 and 2015, this article contends that transgender as a term first circulates among the queer and gender-variant circles as a thinkable possibility primarily through its function as a humanitarian category, especially as propagated by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). By highlighting this specific encounter, the author attempts to demonstrate, however, that rather than focusing on what the term does to the persons it interpellates, one must map out and document the ways the term is taken up and negotiated by the Syrian queer and gender-variant populations themselves, a method that could help ameliorate the negativity attached to transgender as a Western term and show that other systems of identification and histories of gender variance in the Syrian or Syrian diasporic contexts do not simply disappear or are subsumed by transgender, but are further complicated by it and continue to exist alongside it

Marie-Odette Scalliet, Leiden University Library Chronique de l’année des tigres: Raden Saleh entre Paris et Dresde In this short note, the author, a specialist of the Indonesian painter Raden Saleh, endeavours to track the history of several paintings made by the artist during the years of his stay in France. She comes to the conclusion that the large painting entitled “Boschbrand” had been a part of the collections of the king of Holland and therefore that this painting, of which nothing is presently known, might be looked for there. On the other hand, basing herself on detailed archived documents, she can assert that another canvas “Javanische Gegend, wo Tiger eine Gruppe Reisende belauschen”, which appeared in a Hong Kong auction in 2005, must be the one given by the painter to the Grand Duke Ernst II of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.Scalliet Marie-Odette.

Sukar ditentukan sekarang apakah penulis betul-betul berhaluan "kiri", karena kadang-kadang memihak dan kadang-kadang memukul golo- ngan tersebut.— Henri Chambert-Loir (EFEO, Bandung,) discusses a little- known figure from the literature written between the two wars, the novelist Syamsuddin Saleh, who was born in Sumatra and at present lives in retirement in West Malaysia. His numerous works — of which only a few rare copies survive — were all published in Arabic characters ; they were at the same time both social novels and detective stories, and it is difficult now to say whether the author was in fact on the side of the "reds" whom he introduces in his works, sometimes to regard them approvingly, sometimes to condemn them.— Henri Chambert-Loir (EFEO, Bandung) s'intéresse à une figure peu connue de la littérature d'entre les deux guerres, celle du romancier Syamsuddin Saleh, qui natif de Sumatra, vit à présent retiré en Malaysia occidentale. Chambert-Loir Henri.
