Relationship between serics concentracion of vitamin 25(oh) d and oxidative stress levels in a population of diabetes mellitus type 2 (2011).
Objetivo: Determinar si existe una relación entre las concentraciones séricas de vitamina 25 (OH)D y estado de estrés oxidativo en pacientes con DM2 controlada. Muestra: Se reclutaron 19 pacientes, rango de edad 55 +/-10 años, HG A1c 7%. Materiales y Métodos: Los niveles plasmáticos de 25(OH)D por método de quimioluminiscencia, el estado prooxidante por ensayo TBARS y el estado antioxidante mediante actividad SOD. Resultados: El 68% presentó niveles insuficientes de vitamina D. No fue posible establecer una relación de dependencia entre Vitamina D, TBARS y SOD. Conclusiones: Este estudio realizado en pacientes con DM2, demostró una insuficiencia de vitamina D en proporción elevada. Se recomienda medir el estado oxidativo en el tiempo y relacionarlo con la evolución de las complicaciones de la DM2. / Abstract. Objective: Establish a possible relationship between the seric concentration of vitamin 25 (OH) D and oxidative stress status in controlled DM2 patients. Sample: 19 patients were recruited, range of 55 +/-10 years, HG A1c 7%. Method and Materials: The serics levels of 25(OH) D by the quimioluminiscencia method. The prooxidant state by TBARS and antioxidant status through the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Results: 68% is below 30ng/mL Vitamin D levels. It does not make possible to establish a relationship of dependency between Vitamin D, TBARS and SOD. Conclusion: The present study has been done with a DM2 controlled patients who demonstrate a vitamin D insufficiency in a high proportion. The proposal is to measure the evolution of the prooxidant and antioxidant status and the correlation with the complication of DM2.Maestrí
Hypertriglyceridemia and adverse outcomes during pregnancy
Introduction: During pregnancy, levels of maternal serum triglycerides increase as a physiological adaptation mechanism to meet the needs of the developing fetus. However, although an excessive increase has been associated with preeclampsia, macrosomia and preterm delivery, the levels from which measurements should be taken in each trimester to prevent complications have not been established conclusively.Objective: To review the physiopathology, effects on mother and child, expected values in each trimester and therapeutic interventions in maternal hypertriglyceridemia.Materials and methods: A review was made based on a search of articles in the ScienceDirect, Pubmed, Scopus, LILACS, Cochrane and SciELO databases, with the terms: Pregnancy; Hypertriglyceridemia; Maternal-Fetal Exchange; Fetal Development; Pregnancy Complications in English and its equivalents in Spanish.Results: 59 articles met the search criteria and responded to the objectives.Conclusions: The limited amount and the great variability of the data indicate the need to carry out further research to establish the normal triglycerides ranges during the three trimesters of pregnancy and to determine risks and effective interventions before pregnancy in order to reduce maternal and child morbidity and mortality.Introducción. Durante el embarazo, los niveles séricos de triglicéridos maternos aumentan como un mecanismo de adaptación fisiológica para suplir las necesidades del feto en desarrollo. Pese a que el incremento excesivo se ha asociado a preeclampsia, macrosomía y parto pretérmino, no se han establecido de manera contundente los niveles a partir de los cuales se deben tomar medidas en cada trimestre para prevenir complicaciones.Objetivo. Hacer una revisión sobre fisiopatología, efectos en madre e hijo, valores esperados en cada trimestre e intervenciones terapéuticas en hipertrigliceridemia gestacional.Materiales y métodos. Se realizó una revisión con la búsqueda de artículos en las bases de datos ScienceDirect, PubMed, Scopus, LILACS, Cochrane y SciELO con los términos: Pregnancy; Hypertriglyceridemia; Maternal-Fetal Exchange; Fetal Development; Pregnancy Complications y sus equivalentes en español.Resultados. Se encontraron 59 artículos que cumplieron los criterios de búsqueda y daban respuesta a los objetivos.Conclusiones. El número limitado y la gran variabilidad de los datos indican la necesidad de realizar más investigaciones que establezcan los rangos de normalidad de los triglicéridos durante los tres trimestres del embarazo y así determinar riesgos e intervenciones eficaces antes de la gestación y reducir la morbimortalidad materno-infantil
Determinación de hierro sérico por un método colorimétrico y espectrometría de emisión atómica con plasma acoplado por inducción
Se determinaron los niveles séricos de hierro por espectrometría de emisión atómica con plasma acoplado por inducción (ICP-AES) y colorimetría (hierro-fereno) en treinta niños bogotanos, de 9 años de edad, clínicamente sanos. Por espectrometría una tercera parte de la población presentó sideremias inferiores a 60 m g/dL, mientras que por colorimetría solamente un niño evidenció concentraciones bajas de hierro. Puesto que la deficiencia de hierro, aun en ausencia de anemia, se acompaña de alteraciones del crecimiento corporal y del aprendizaje, nuestros resultados sugieren la necesidad de evaluar las técnicas que actualmente se utilizan en los laboratorios clínicos del país para la medición de este micronutrienteSerum iron levels were measured by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and colorimetry (iron-ferene) in thirty clinically healthy nine years old children living in Bogotá. With the spectrometric method, one third of the population displayed serum iron levels lower than 60 m g/dL, whereas with the colorimetric method only one child showed an iron concentration under this level. Since iron deficiency, even when anemia was not present, has been associated with body growth and cognitive alterations, our results support the need of evaluating the techniques that are being used in the Colombian clinical laboratories for the measurement of this micronutrient
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Análisis de la confusión producida por la creatinina y la edad en la correlación entre los niveles del receptor soluble 1 del factor de necrosis tumoral α (sTNFR1) y la tasa de filtración glomerular estimada (TFGe) en pacientes colombianos con diabetes mellitus tipo 2
Introduction. Tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) is a cytokine involved in inflammatory processes associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2). Although the correlation between soluble TNF-α receptor 1 (sTNFR1) levels and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) has been already described in Colombian population with DM2, the influence of sTNFR1 on eGFR in a model adjusted for age and creatinine level has not yet been evaluated.
Objectives. To identify and evaluate the linear correlations between sTNFR1 levels, routine clinical variables, and eGFR in Colombian patients with DM2.
Materials and methods. Cross-sectional study conducted in March 2020 in 69 patients with DM2 who were enrolled in the Program for the Prevention of Diabetes Complications and Dyslipidemias of the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Medical records were reviewed in order to obtain sociodemographic, anthropometric and clinical data. Serum sTNFR1 levels were determined by means of an ELISA test. A multiple linear regression model (stepwise regression) was performed to evaluate correlations between sTNFR1, clinical variables, and eGFR.
Results. The final multiple linear regression model, which includes creatinine levels, sTNFR1 levels, and age, explained 72% of the variance of eGFR (p=0.023). Furthermore, sTNFR1 levels explained 20% of the variance of eGFR independently (standardized β coefficient: -0.2; 95%CI: [-0.008]-[-0.001]; p=0.02).
Conclusion. In the final multiple linear regression model, an inversely proportional and statistically significant linear correlation was found between sTNFR1 levels and eGFR, independent of serum creatinine levels and age. Compared with age, sTNFR1 levels have a superior effect in terms of changes in eGFR.Introducción. El factor de necrosis tumoral α (TNF-α) es una citoquina involucrada en los procesos inflamatorios de la diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM2). Aunque la correlación entre los niveles del receptor soluble 1 del TNF-α (sTNFR1) y la tasa de filtración glomerular estimada (TFGe) ya ha sido descrita previamente en población colombiana con DM2, la influencia del sTNFR1 en la TFGe en un modelo ajustado a edad y creatinina no ha sido evaluada.
Objetivos. Identificar y evaluar las correlaciones lineales entre los niveles del sTNFR1, las variables clínicas de uso rutinario y la TFGe en pacientes colombianos con DM2.

Los datos sociodemográficos, antropométricos y clínicos se recolectaron a partir de la revisión de las historias clínicas. Los niveles séricos del sTNFR1 se determinaron mediante prueba de ELISA. Se realizó un modelo de regresión lineal múltiple (regresión paso a paso) para evaluar las correlaciones entre el sTNFR1, las variables clínicas y la TFGe.
Resultados. El modelo final de regresión lineal múltiple, que incluye niveles de creatinina, niveles del sTNFR1 y edad, explica el 72% de la varianza de la TFGe (p=0.023); además, los niveles del sTNFR1 explican el 20% de la varianza de la TFGe de forma independiente (coeficiente β estandarizado: -0.2; IC95%: [-0.008]-[-0.001]; p=0.02).

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
