Hand gesture recognition for multimedia applications

Hand gesture is potentially a very natural and useful modality for human-machine interaction. It is considered to be one of the most complicated and interesting challenges in computer vision due to its articulated structure and environmental variations. Solving such challenges requires robust hand detection, feature description, and viewpoint invariant classification. This thesis introduces several steps to tackle these challenges and applies them in a hand-gesture-based application (a game) to demonstrate the proposed approach. Techniques on new feature description, hand gesture detection and viewpoint invariant methods are explored and evaluated. A normal webcam is used in the research as input device. Hands are segmented using pre-trained skin colour models and tracked using the CAMShift tracker. Moment invariants are used as a shape descriptor. A new approach utilising the Zernike Velocity Moments (ZVMs, first introduced by Shutler and Nixon [1,2]), is examined on hand gestures. Results obtained using the ZVMs as spatial-temporal descriptor are compared to an HMM with Zemike moments (ZMs). Manually isolated hand gestures are used as input to the ZVM descriptor which generates vectors of features that are classified using a regression classifier. The performance of ZVM is evaluated using isolated, user-independent and user-dependent data. Isolating (segmenting) the gesture manually from a video stream for gesture recognition is a research proposition only and real life scenarios require an automatic hand gesture detection mechanism. Two methods for detecting gestures are examined. Firstly, hand gesture detection is performed using a sliding window which segments sequences of frames and then evaluates them against pre-trained HMMs. Secondly, the set of class-specific HMMs is combined into a single HMM and the Viterbi algorithm is then used to find the optimal sequence of gestures. Finally, the thesis proposes a flexible application that provides the user with options to perform the gesture from different viewpoints. A usable hand gesture recognition system should be able to cope with such viewpoint variations. To solve this problem, a new approach is introduced which makes use of 3D models of hand gestures (not postures) for generating projections. A virtual arm with 3D models of real hands is created. After that, virtual movements of the hand are simulated using animation software and projected from different viewpoints. Using a multi-Gaussian HMM, the system is trained on the projected sequences. Each set of hand gesture projections is marked with its specific class and used to train the single multi-class HMNI with gestures across different viewpoints

Rajab fasting is a form of worship which is classified as sunnah fasting. This research was conducted because of a tradition that was built on the basis of reception of hadith. So, it can be said that this tradition was formed because of an understanding of hadith. Therefore, the formulation of the problem raised in this study was made to see how the history of the Rajab fasting tradition, the rituals that occurred in it during the process of carrying out the Rajab tradition, and find out how the students' understanding of the Rajab fasting hadith is. This research is a type of field research (field research) which obtained qualitative data. The focus of this research is on the students at the Riyadul Qur'an Taklim Assembly who carry out the Rajaban tradition in it. This research was conducted for approximately two months by means of direct observation, conducting interviews, and collecting documentation. The main sources for this study were taken from field data, then interviews with Ustaz Aziz, Mrs. Elis, four students, and Mrs. Iik. From the data obtained, the author uses the theory of Living Hadith and also the theory of Alfred Schutz as a phenomenological approach to reveal the meaning that occurs in it, in theory Alfred Schutz has two motives, namelyBecause Motive (Motive Cause) and In Order To Motive (Purpose Motive) which also in this theory says that every action must have a cause behind it. From the research that has been conducted by the author at the Riyadul Qur'an Taklim Assembly, the results show that; First, the santri knew the hadith about Rajab fasting, which was obtained from Ustaz Aziz himself as the owner of the Taklim Riyadul Qur'an Assembly. The santri understand that in the implementation of the rajaban tradition, it departs from the Prophet's hadith, which has been done for generations, and the rituals performed in the rajaban tradition are still within the limits of Islamic teachings, such as reciting Al-Fātiḥah, beristigfar, recitation of Badr/Badriyah prayers, and prayers.Second, through Alfred Schutz's theory, stated that the implementation of the Rajaban tradition was due to maintaining the previously existing traditions and as a vessel for distributing alms, while the aim was to strengthen friendship and instill Islamic values within

In his writings, the Arab author Al-Jahiz addressed issues related to music, Tarab (a genre of music), and singing. Al-Jahiz was known for his knowledge and literature, and he wrote numerous works that shed light on the luxurious aspects of society. He authored a book titled "Ethics of Singers" and another titled "Singers, Singing, and the Craft." In these books, Al-Jahiz defended singing as an artistic form and believed that it possessed scientific principles and foundations similar to other arts and literature. He promoted singing as a pleasurable art form. Despite his affiliation with the Mu\u27tazila school of thought, Al-Jahiz was a supporter of singing and singers, and he wrote about their ethics and arts. In his treatise "Al-Qiyan," Al-Jahiz discussed the influence of courtesans and their households on Islamic society, pointing to the immorality, passion, and vice that may result from this influence. Overall, Al-Jahiz\u27s writings have had a significant impact on our understanding of music, Tarab, and singing in ancient times

Theoretical Insights of History, Morality, and Society as the Literary Trio of the Author-Reader Relationship.

    No full text
This paper attempts to examine the relationship between the author and the reader by polarizing history, morality, and society as a selected triad of theoretical interpretation. The study mainly focuses on the theoretical insights of these relationships in order to give proper clues for delving deep into the technical and thematic peculiarities of different literary genres. Therefore, it follows a qualitative approach to some fictional works, particularly novels, to demonstrate how the authorial perspective intersects with the reader’s ability to grasp the latent textual messages projected by authors in the course of the plots. The relationship between the author and the reader will be limited to three related topics, namely, history, morality, and society. As for history, the study sheds light on the postcolonial attributes of literature to reveal the function of liberal humanism in bridging the gap between the colonized people and the colonizers. Morality, on the other hand, will be discussed to explore the relative view of morality by authors and how the reader might conceptualize it according to his/her cultural background. Lastly, the discussion of society will be limited to the social customs and norms approached by authors to deliver a comprehensive depiction of the social reality in which the reader lives his/her true life
