    The Erwin Lichtenstein Collection documents the work of Erwin Lichtenstein as an author. The bulk of the archival collection is in reference to his book "Die Juden der Freien Stadt Danzig unter der Herrschaft des Nationalsozialismus 1933-1945". The correspondence with Sam Echt, Werner Feilchenfeld, Ernst Loops and others reflect the response to Erwin Lichtenstein's publication. Noteworthy with regard to the book is the correspondence between Günter Grass and Erwin Lichtenstein. He was the son of the lawyer (Justizrat) Dr. Max Lichtenstein. Erwin Lichtenstein studied law at the universities of Koenigsberg, Berlin and Leipzig. In 1922 he completed his doctoral studies. Afterwards he was a lawyer for the National Association of the ‘Centralverein deutscher Staatsbürger mit jüdischem Glauben’ in East Prussia. 1923-1926 he was the editor of the weekly "Danziger Rundschau". He practiced law in Germany from 1930-1933. After his exclusion from the bar, due to being Jewish, he returned to Danzig (Gdansk, Poland). He was the head of the relief organization of the Jewish Centralwohlfahrtstelle. From 1933 until his emigration in 1939 to Tel Aviv, Lichtenstein was the head of the Danzig Jewish Community and he was also editor of the ‘Jüdisches Gemeindeblatt’. In 1953, he started to practice law in Israel.     Defining nearly zero-energy housing in Belgium and the Netherlands

    Europe expects the housing sector to evolve towards ‘nearly zero-energy’ dwellings. Meanwhile, general terms and research, marketing and legal definitions considering such dwellings have already been introduced. Appraisal of existing definitions is now needed for further policy development. This paper examines what nearly zero-energy terms can be expected to be adopted in Belgium and the Netherlands. The research method uses an interview method based on innovation diffusion theory. The analysis traces the regional adoption trajectory of relevant definitions and examines the opportunities and barriers for the inclusion of existing definitions in regional energy policy. The analysis shows that—whilst international prominence of the terms ‘net zero energy’ and ‘net zero carbon’, in addition to ‘low energy’ and ‘passive house’, is observed—in Belgium and the Netherlands ‘passive house’ and ‘energy neutral’ are preferred. The research findings indicate that the adoption of already existing definitions for nearly zero-energy houses will depend on the region and can prove a very complex process with several conflicting issues. Terms should be clearly defined and used at all political and marketing levels.     Passive house networks: A social innovation targeting innovation in SME's in the construction sector

    This study examines opportunities for the emergence of SME networks regarding highly energy-efficient housing, as well as the barriers they face. A theoretical innovation diffusion model is developed from the point-of-view of social and environmental entrepreneurship and sustainable consumption. The qualitative analysis reflects key elements from the theoretical model and is based on a representative case study of a successful passive house network located in the Belgian Flemish Region. Data were gathered during the emergence of the network, by means of participant observation and action-based (thematic innovation) research. Interviews provided further supplementary information. The study concludes that the successful emergence of an SME network regarding highly energy-efficient housing requires a holistic approach, in which both enterprises and clients are guided in each step of the innovation-decision process.     Agra ichabod Erwin, new species (Figs. 28 a, 28 b) Holotype. Female, COSTA RICA: Alajuela, Atenas, 9 º 58 'N 84 º 23 'W, May, (C. Aviles)(UCOR) ADP 7607. Diagnosis. This is the only species of Costa Rican Agra with aeneous elytral foveae and slightly oblique apex without a sutural tooth; foveae nearly contiguous. Description. Male unknown. Color and luster: Rufopiceous, aeneous. Legs rufopiceous with slightly infuscated knees; venter rufoaeneous. Foveae of interneurs with metallic blue reflections. Form: Head unknown. Pronotum with large punctures along each side of midline. Female slender, with elytra slightly flared behind middle. Elytron with apex (Fig. 28 a) moderately oblique, lateral tooth small, sutural apex rounded; foveae of interneurs large and positioned irregularly, some separated by their own diameter, other coalesced. Sternum VI (Fig. 28 b) of female nearly truncate. Size: small, 12mm in length (length of head estimated based on proportions of Agra monteverde Erwin (see below), 3.0mm in width. Other specimens examined. The female Holotype is the only specimen I saw. Specific epithet. The specific epithet, ichabod, is used as a noun in apposition, and refers to the fact that the Holotype is missing its head and the illusion is that of the frightened Schoolteacher Ichabod Crane’s phantom nemesis, the Headless Horseman, in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow from The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon, by the American author, Washington Irving, published in 1819 ­ 20. Notes. The Holotype is from the Cordillera Volcánica Central Conservation Area. This very distinctive species is represented only by the female Holotype, which is headless, however, its unique elytral attributes justify giving it a name and bringing it to the attention of collectors. The head may be described later, based on discovery of a second, complete, specimen.     Upscaling the residential heat provision towards the district scale: Managing geothermal district heating development

    The world has been facing a detrimental climate change since the beginning of the industrial era due to anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that are expected to increase exponentially whereas the energy sector is the largest pollutant. Households in the Netherlands are one of the dominant final end users of energy and a transition within this group could contribute to reducing GHG emissions. Local authorities endorse efforts to implement energy policies, but face the complexity in actor networks. This research focusses on how public, private and civic actors manage upscaling residential heat-generating facilities to district scale in the built environment in the Netherlands. While measures to reduce the GHG emission for electricity seem decisive, the vast majority of the Dutch households retain a carbon lock-in for heating. A motion towards decarbonisation is an area-based approach in which deep geothermal district heating networks. Although scholars acknowledge the existence of barriers and opportunities of upscaling the residential heat provision to district level, little literature is found on cases where the existing residential building stock is adapted for renewable district scale heat-generating facilities with geothermal energy as source in the Netherlands. This research addresses the knowledge gap on the management of upscaling geothermal district heating networks by public, private and civic actors by performing an actor analysis. The main goal of the research is to gain understanding in the local approaches and efforts of Geothermal District Heating Development (GDHD) and aims to clarify, gather and model the involved actor roles. Empirical research on the managerial actor roles is performed on the development project of Ammerlaan-TGI and Haagse Aardwarmte Leyweg (HAL). The findings on the case study reveal compiled chronologic events managed by a variety of actors. While actors are interwoven with each other by their dependencies, their managerial roles are evaluated on using management aspects in a cross-case setting, indicating how related management aspect variables apply to the GDHD. The outcome is assessed by experts who participated in a two-round Delphi-study from which effective roles for upscaling of geothermal district heating in the coming years is determined. The results show a large public actor integration in GDHD and role segregation among the actors, pointing out the immaturity of the sector. The public actors need to continue using stimulus tools and develop regulatory tools to foster maturation of the sector and evoke competitive advantage. Also their capacity building tools should be used to their full extent to match the heat supply and demand. Consensus between public, private and civic actors is considered most effective in GDHD, where through intensive communication, negotiation and decision making is agreed on the desired environmental quality for the built environment, our built environment.Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences | Management in the Built Environmen

De berekening van de warmteverliezen ter plaatse van bouwknopen is een correctie voor de vereenvoudigde tweedimensionale vereenvoudiging op basis van buitenafmetingen (NBN B 62-002) en is sterk afhankelijk van de geometrie. Meestal wordt gebruik gemaakt van numerieke berekeningsmethodes voor twee- of drie-dimensionaal warmtetransport om de thermische prestaties van bouwdetails te analyseren. Architecten en ingenieurs dienen echter te beschikken over criteria om de resultaten van de berekening te kunnen toetsen: wanneer voldoet een detail, en wanneer zijn verdere ingrepen nodig?     Modular Web Portal Approach for Stimulating Home Renovation: Lessons from Local Authority Developments

    Web portals have the potential to promote sustainable environmental ideas due to the capacity of digital media, such as easy accessibility, openness, and networking. Local authorities (LAs) are responsible for activating carbon savings in homes, and they are key actors when it comes to providing neutral information to their citizens. Local authority web portals may thus create environmental awareness, particularly regarding owner-occupied single-family home renovation. Nevertheless, the experiences of LAs developing web portals have rarely been studied. Therefore, this paper analyses the development process of various LA web modules and investigates how LAs foster modular web portals to stimulate the adoption of home renovation with parameters to assess LAs’ actions in terms of the management of web-modules development. A homeowner renovation journey model is applied to map current local authority developments. Case study research and interviews were done to analyse and evaluate the adoption of modular web portals developed and tested by six local authorities in four countries in Europe.
