    Get PDF
The present study represents the cross between Cultural Studies and Curricular and Leisure Studies. At this intersection, strategies for curriculum formation and subjectivity in the postcolonial world are discussed, based on the relationship between the concepts of dis-placement and inter-places of Stuart Hall and Homi Bhabha. The notion of curriculum, according to Marlucy Paraíso, articulated with the diaspora of African people, in the reading of Paul Gilroy, opens the path for the study that proposes an approximation between the personal experiences described by Hall, Ebony Thomas and the author of this article, to perceive Afrofuturism as an alternative for the construction of forms of curriculum for the leisure, which, instead of imprisoning, reactivate forces, committing themselves to ethnic-racial relationships.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Isto resulta na percepção da HQ como expressão cultural decolonial com características afrofuturistas, que atua sobre o imaginário em disputa nas narrativas gráficas contemporâneasBased on a methodology that articulates Afrofuturism and Theresa Tensuan’s critical approach to comics, the comic book Magda – by Rafael Campos Rocha – is analyzed in a perspective discussed by Marlucy Paraíso: as a cultural text oriented to leisure and entertainment, capable of generating behaviors and guiding processes of subjectivation. This results in the perception of the comic as a decolonial cultural expression with Afrofuturist characteristics, which acts on the imaginary in dispute in contemporary graphic narratives.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF

Comic pornotopia: the theatricalized fiction of sexuality in Magda, Deus aos domingos and garota Silat

This paper employs Paul B. Preciado’s concept of pornotopia, along with Theresa Tensuan’s critical approach to comics, to analyze the representation of the characters Magda, Deus and Garota Silat, created by the comics artist Rafael Campos Rocha. The investigation also employs the perspective of Marlucy Paraíso, in which the three characters are protagonists in cultural texts oriented to leisure and entertainment. Based on the content analysis methodology outlined by Bardin, pornotopias are posited as models of masculinity invented for the production and consumption of pleasure by way of their presence in comics simultaneously reproductive and critical of that very masculinity. In this view, the representation of the female body reproduces Preciado’s theatricalized fiction of sexuality and, at the same time, challenges this fiction through presenting discourses that interface with discourses of decoloniality, questioning hegemonic patriarchal symbolic structures. In this sense, the characters confirm Tensuan’s reading of the comics, offering a vision of performative practices, family rituals and cultural conventions that articulate individual and collective differences in the context in which they are inserted, the context of a Brazil permeated by complex disputes over the culturally constructed concept of gender.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Cinema africano e imaginário decolonial: sobre Africanofuturismo no curta-metragem Afronauts

This paper uses Homi K. Bhabha’s (2013) concept of Postcolonial – added to the contributions of W.E.B. Du Bois (2016), Aimé Cesaire (1978) and Frantz Fanon (2008) – to analyze the short film Afronauts (Bodomo, 2014) directed by Nuotama Frances Bodomo. The work of Gayatri Spivak (2010) is also used to discuss how the postcolonial affects subalternized peoples and its connection with the historical condition of black peoples in Diaspora as described by Paul Gilroy (2001); a dialogue is thus established with the diasporic and decolonial art studied and produced by Kobena Mercer (1994) and Grada Kilomba (2014). The methodology is based on Nnedi Okorafor’s Africanfuturism, to understand the decolonial aspects present in a film based on a true story. In this sense, Glissant’s (1997) concept of imaginary supports the presentation of the following thoughts: Aníbal Quijano’s (2005) concept of coloniality of power; the critical border thinking proposed by Walter D. Mignolo (2018); and Ramón Grosfoguel’s (2009) decolonial epistemic perspective. Concepts that organize the perception of the short film as a decolonial cultural expression and allow discussing the likely implications that Africanfuturist works have on the imaginary in dispute in the contemporary cinematic medium.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
