Determinants of Alanine Dipeptide Conformational Equilibria on Graphene and Hydroxylated Derivatives

The Journal of Physical Chemistry B. https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.jpcb.7b01130Understanding the interaction of carbon nanomaterials with proteins is essential for determining the potential effects of these materials on health and in the design of biotechnology based on them. Here we leverage explicit-solvent molecular simulation and multidimensional free-energy calculations to investigate how adsorption to carbon nanomaterial surfaces affects the conformational equilibrium of alanine dipeptide, a widely used model of protein backbone structure. We find that the two most favorable structures of alanine dipeptide on graphene (or large carbon nanotubes) correspond to the two amide linkages lying in the same plane, flat against the surface, rather than the nonplanar ?-helix-like and ?-sheet-like conformations that predominate in aqueous solution. On graphenic surfaces, the latter conformations are metastable and most often correspond to amide?? stacking of the N-terminal amide. The calculations highlight the key role of amide?? interactions in determining the conformational equilibrium. Lesser but significant contributions from hydrogen bonding to the high density interfacial water layer or to the hydroxy groups of hydroxylated graphene also define the most favorable conformations. This work should yield insight on the influence of carbon nanotubes, graphene, and their functionalized derivatives on protein structure

No full textEn el presente trabajo se plantea una propuesta para el estudio de la literatura nacional analizando la siguiente novela: El asco de Horacio Castellanos Moya. El contenido de esta obra y tema principal es el monólogo de un emigrante quien logra regresar a su patria, una vez superada la guerra civil salvadoreña y asistiendo al funeral de su madre. La clave está en la frase que acompaña al nombre El asco: Thomas Bernhard en San Salvador. Edgardo Vega, el protagonista central, vive en Montreal bajo un nombre distinto y es un personaje clave en este relato de ciento cuarenta y cuatro páginas. Es una crítica feroz a El Salvador y la gente que conforman su sociedad. Después de dieciocho años de exilio voluntario en Canadá. La obra podríamos tomarla como una comparación y admiración por un escritor Austriaco, por eso adoptó el nombre de Thomas Bernhard donde este hace una crítica fuerte de hipocresía nazi y de sus compatriotas.

No full text(English) This bachelor thesis is dedicated to the work of short stories written by the hispano- american author Horacio Quiroga. It's main focus is the genre of fantastic short stories. First chapter of this thesis captures the life of the author and important events of his life that influenced his work. Emphasis is placed on the tragic of Quirogaś life because death was not only an element present at all times of his life but also an important motif depicted in his artistic creation. The next chapter treats modernism, since it's ideas influenced the work of Quiroga. The following chapter defines the concept of fantastic literature. The last chapter of this thesis treats the fantastic short stories of Horacio Quiroga and continues with a detailed practical analysis of a few selected short stories. Histoire et fiction dans l'œuvre de Horacio Castellanos Moya
No full textThe late twentieth century and early twenty-first century have seen revived the debate about the relationship between history and literature, understood as fiction, in the sense of a blurring of boundaries between the two. Based on this premise, our study at the crossroads of these two concepts aims to show the links between contemporary Central American history and fiction in novels of Honduras-Salvadoran author Horacio Castellanos Moya. Indeed, the history of several Central American countries, marked by years of dictatorship, civil wars and political or economic violence has had a significant impact on many local authors. The fictional work of Horacio Castellanos Moya bears evident traces. To identify, understand their issues and how they appear in the novels, the study was divided into three main parts. The first deals with the biographical data Horacio Castellanos Moya as man and writer; the second, the main historical facts themed and the last of their stage in the work.La fin du XXe siècle et le début du XXIe siècle ont vu renaître le débat sur les rapports entre l’histoire et la littérature, entendue comme fiction, dans le sens d'un effacement des frontières entre les deux. Partant de ce postulat, notre étude, à la croisée de ces deux notions, a pour objectif de montrer les liens qui existent entre l’histoire centraméricaine contemporaine et la fiction dans les romans de l’auteur honduro-salvadorien Horacio Castellanos Moya. No full textIn this dissertation, I analyze the representations of the theme of horror in the short stories of Edgar Allan Poe, Horacio Quiroga, and Alfonso Hernandez-Cat. In my research, I have also analyzed the representation of the themes of death and madness that are germane to the works of Edgar Allan Poe, Horacio Quiroga, and Alfonso Hern-ndez-Cat. My analysis of their works explores psychological horror, domestic horror, madness, and death, in the works of the aforementioned authors. This dissertation proceeds from the premise that the narratives of writers such as Alfonso Hernandez-Cat are obscure in the research foci but remain germane to the topic of study in the linkages that seem to exist between madness and death in literature

He uses this theme as a narrative strategy to reveal that nothing has changed politically or culturally in his country even after years of devastating civil war. Inside of this cynicism we can see two sub-themes, eroticism and violence, used as expressions of a political transition from civil war to the fractured post-civil war era in El Salvador.
