Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDFThe problems of reception of the writer in another national literature is one of the fundamental in modern literary criticism. Shakespeare’s creativity laid the leading cultural «codes» of European artistic consciousness. This article is devoted to the investigation of the reception of the English writer William Shakespeare in different countries from the point of view of comparative studies. The reasons that provoked interest to Shakespeare in the literary and critical thought of the XIX–XX centuries were indicated. In the article, thetheoretical aspects of literary translation as a form of interliterary ties were analyzed. The scientific works of different scientists who investigated the texts and sonnets of the English writer from the point of view of Comparative Literature were processed. The approaches which the scientists have used in the study of the reception of works and sonnets of the English author were characterized. Much has been done by the researchers of the English author in the theory and practice of translation (in the English-speaking countries Literary Translation is an integral part of comparative literature). The creation of the translating reception of Shakespeare’s texts showed that it became a difficult and infinitely renewed process at the beginning of the twentieth century in Ukraine. This process continues its active development nowadays, but it couldn’t be taken as a canonization of «correct» and final translation of the «original» Shakespeare. It was investigated that research creative works of Shakespeare, whatever country they are now committed, it’s vector focused primarily on receptive model. On the basis of updated in Ukrainian humanitarian discourse of literary-critical studies and translations of Ukrainian writers, the article presents the main dominant reception of Shakespeare, giving the answers to the question why Shakespeare was one of those writers who significantly influenced the development of the Ukrainian literature. The reception of works depends on the interpretations of historical culture, even unknown impact on the interpretation of it. Repeated acquaintance with the original novelty of aesthetic experience and the experience is caused by a change in the cultural and aesthetic potential, especially the growth and enrichment of the requirements of the subject of reception. It was detected that the specific process of perception of works of art for all people has an individual character, as distinguished by the level of emotional sensitivity and nature of representations arising in the perception of the same artwork. It depends on many factors: emotional human experience, interests, aesthetic taste, characteristic type of person perception, emotional level of human development, physical and psychological state at the moment of perception, the conditions under which this process occurs, the installation of perception, the human capacity for full perception works of art.Keywords: reception, interpretation, translation, literature, text, translator, work, reader, perception.Показано, що проблеми рецепції письменника в іншій національній літературівідіграють значну роль у сучасній літературній критиці. Творчість Шекспіра заклала провідні культурні «коди» європейської художньої свідомості.Досліджено рецепції творчості англійського письменника Вільяма Шекспіра урізних країнах з погляду літературознавчої компаративістики. Висвітлено причини, що зумовили інтерес до Шекспіра в літературно-критичній думці ХІХ–ХХ ст. Було з’ясовано теоретичні аспекти художнього перекладу як форми міжлітературних зв’язків. Схарактеризовано підходи, якими послуговувалися науковці при вивченні рецепції творів та сонетів англійського автора. Ґрунтуючись на актуалізованих в українському гуманітарному дискурсі літературно-критичних студіях і перекладах українських письменників, подаємо основні домінанти рецепції Шекспіра, даючи відповіді на питання, чому Шекспір став одним із тих письменників, який помітно вплинув на становлення української літератури. Сприйняття творів залежить від інтерпретацій, історично закладених у культурі, навіть невідомі інтерпретації впливають на це. При багаторазовому знайомстві з оригіналом новизна естетичного враження та переживання обумовлюється зміною культурно-естетичного потенціалу, перш за все зростанням та збагаченням вимог суб’єкта сприйняття. Досліджуючи рецепцію творів англійського поета в інших національних літературах було виявлено, що закон естетичного впливу, за яким створюється текст, визначає напрям і тип його читацького / перекладацького сприйняття. «Вплив» та «сприйняття» перебувають в особливому (суб’єктно-об’єктному) взаємозв’язку.Ключові слова: рецепція, інтерпретація, переклад, література, текст, перекладач, твір, читач, сприйняття.Продемонстровано что проблемы рецепции писателя в другой национальнойлитературе играют значительную роль в современной литературной критике. Творчество Шекспира заложило ведущие культурные «коды» европейского художественного сознания. Исследованы рецепции творчества английского писателя Уильяма Шекспира в разных странах з точки зрения компаративистики. Указаны причины, которые спровоцировали интерес к Шекспиру в литературно-критичской мысли ХІХ–ХХ ст. Выяснены теоретические аспекты художественного перевода как формы межлитературных связей. Охарактеризованы подходы, которые использовали учёные при изучении рецепции произведений и сонетов английского автора. Основываясь на актуализированных в украинском гуманитарном дискурсе литературно-критических студиях и переводах украинских писателей, поданы основные доминанты рецепции Шекспира, отвечая на те вопросы, почему Шекспир стал одним из тех писателей, который заметно повлиял на становление украинской литературы. Восприятие произведений зависит от интерпретаций, исторически заложеных в культуре, в том числе речь идето неизвестных интерпретациях, которые имеют непосредственное влияние на это. При многократном знакомстве с оригиналом новизна эстетического впечатления и переживания обусловливается изменением культурно-эстетического потенциала, прежде всего ростом и обогащением требований субъекта восприятия.Ключевые слова: рецепция, интерпретация, перевод, литература, текст, переводчик, произведение, читатель, восприятие
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
