Introduction to special issue
No full textICUC8, the 8th International Conference on Urban Climates held in conjunction with the 10th Symposium on the Urban Environment, was held in Dublin, Ireland from August 6th–10th 2012. ICUC8 was jointly organised by the International Association for Urban Climate (IAUC) and the American Meteorological Society’s Board of the Urban Environment. ICUC events are held on a three year cycle; ICUC7 was held in Yokohama, Japan in 2009 and ICUC9 will be held in Toulouse, France in 2015. ICUC8 was the largest conference devoted to urban climates to this point and there were nearly 500 papers and posters presented; the majority of these are in the conference proceedings, which are available online at the IAUC website (www.urban-climate.org). Separately, a report on the conference can be found in Urban News, the newsletter of the IAUC

No full textGerald Hughes is from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He grew up in a town that was majority white. He went to a Mennonite school in Indiana and through a volunteer program gained his first experience in the city of Cleveland. He initially hoped to work in the steel mills but they were on strike when he arrived in the city. Hughes was not fond of his first trip to Cleveland as it was a cold, wet day in March. His wife worked at Standard Oil and when he first moved to the area he moved by the place he could continue to carry out his church volunteer program, in the Mt. Pleasant area. He was a music major, became an educator and an administrator in the Cleveland Public School System. He was around the Mt. Pleasant area to witness white flight, then moved to the Cleveland Heights area, only to watch his neighborhood go from integrated to predominantly black again. He remained in the public school system at Sowinski (no longer in existence) and Harvey Rice. He witnessed the Polish community change to black in around Sowinski and later went to the predominantly black school, Harvey Rice. He was an administrator during desegregation of the Public School System. He completed a follow-up interview due to equipment failure: see interview 990040

The Relationship of Music and Poetry in Dies Natalis by Gerald Finzi
No full textabstract: This paper explores the relationship of text and music in Dies Natalis by Gerald Finzi. Many of Gerald Finzi’s compositions have been researched and analyzed, but Dies Natalis, a work for high voice and string quartet, has received limited attention. The text is by Thomas Traherne, a lesser-known English poet and theologian. The research investigates textual interpretation and an explanation or a discussion of the religious mysticism of Traherne. After a biographical discussion of the composer and the poet, this paper provides a musical analysis, including a study of thematic and harmonic relationships in the work, and an examination of word painting and text setting.
