Václav Havel’s Legacy: Politics as Morality

    No full text
The paper considers the legacy of Václav Havel in regard to civil disobedience and dissident action. The paper frames its analysis on the long-standing debate Havel undertook with the Czech author Milan Kundera. Ultimately the paper argues that the nuance to Havel’s optimism, as it emerges against Kundera’s more pessimistic position, regarding dissident action is a timely and important response with great value for contemporary global challenges

The subject of this paper is the analysis of Milan Kundera's novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Starting from the cultural theory, the novel is analysed on set opposites: easy-difficult, body-soul, private-public, coincidence-fate, essay on papa-novel, and covers the characters, their relationships, actions and social-historical context, especially considering the period and the direction of postmodernism

TITLE: Use of virtual worlds in the educational process AUTHOR: Milan Randák DEPARTMENT: Department of information technology and technology education SUPERVISOR: doc. PhDr. Vladimír Rambousek, CSc. ABSTRACT: This thesis is focused on the phenomenon of virtual worlds in the context of didactics, in terms of their educational function, didactic specifics and possibilities of utilization. The study deals with virtual worlds as an innovative didactic resource, which is useful in school praxis. The thesis formulates a rating system of suitability of virtual worlds for use in the educational process and this suitability is empirically investigated through an action research. The action research was carried out in different types of virtual worlds and with different teaching contents and objectives, including questionnaires and a comparison of the students' educational results. KEYWORDS: Education, educational tools, virtual environment, virtual world, virtual reality, Minecraft, OpenSi

Electron properties of the substituted cerium compounds

Title: Electron properties of the substituted cerium compounds Author: Milan Klicpera Department: Department of Condensed Matter Physics Supervisor: doc. Mgr. Pavel Javorský Dr. Abstract: The subject of this work is the study of vibron states in tetragonal CeCuAl3 and CePd2Al2 compounds and their development with the substitution of constituent elements. After the preparation of single crystals and polycrystalline samples, the careful chemical and structural characterization was done. The structural, magnetic and superconducting phase transitions in samples were observed and thoroughly investigated. The crucial experiments were performed using the elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques leading to the refinement of magnetic structures in CeCuAl3, CePd2Al2 and CePd2Ga2. The energy spectra of substituted Ce(Cu,Al)4 and CePd2(Al,Ga)2 compounds were studied as well allowing to determine the crystal field excitations and their interaction with phonons (vibron states) in these materials. Keywords: cerium internetallic compounds, vibron states, electronic properties, neutron scatterin

Divided Within the Self: The Struggle of Finding Identity in Milan Kundera's "The Unbearable Lightness of Being"

    No full text
Authors often explore the details of identity and body politics through their writing. Czech author Milan Kundera’s novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being deals heavily with the marginalized and oppressed body, considering how such bodies function, how they perceive themselves, how they are perceived by others, and how such bodies are, by nature, a defiance of an established hegemony. The novel considers the exiled body and how such exile can deliver freedom, cause further marginalization, or craft an ambivalent mixture of the two. The oppressed and marginalized body, as understood through literature, acts not just as a mirror of society but also as an avenue for navigating a subject as dense as identity and body politics

“Small Peoples”: The Existential Uncertainty of Ethnonational Communities

This exploratory paper attempts to extend the boundaries of research on the “smallness” of polities. It introduces the concept of “small peoples,” a term coined by Czech author Milan Kundera to denote communities that lack a “sense of an eternal past and future.” The paper posits “small peoples” as ethnic communities characterized by prolonged and deep-rooted uncertainty regarding their own existence. I argue that in modern times, “small peoples” doubt the validity of their past-based ethnic identity and the viability of their future-driven national polity. Empirically, I analyze two distinct “small peoples”—Israeli Jews and French Canadians (Québécois)—and argue that while the former have been more concerned with the future survival of their polity, the latter have been more concerned with insecurity about their identity. The paper suggests that a focus on communities and their intersubjective processes can enrich the study of states and their objective state
