    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Analysis techniques for femtoscopy and correlation studies in small collision systems and their applications to the investigation of p–Λ and Λ–Λ interactions with ALICE

    Femtoscopy is a technique relating the correlations between pairs of particles to their emission source and interaction potential. Traditionally femtoscopy is used to study the properties of the emission source, mostly by using charged pion correlations, for which the correlation function is determined only by the Bose-Einstein statistics and Coulomb interaction. The topic of this work is the non-traditional baryon–baryon femtoscopy, the goal of which is to study the interaction potential between different baryon pairs, assuming the emission source is fixed. Such an approach is quite challenging as it requires an exact treatment of the strong potential in order to compute the correlation function, as well as knowledge on the profile and size of the emission source. In the work presented here, a new “Correlation Analysis Tool using the Schrödinger equation” (CATS) has been developed to tackle the issue related to the modeling of the correla- tion function. In previous works it was proposed that in small collision systems the source is approximately the same for all baryon–baryon pairs and this feature leads to the opportunity of using the p–p correlations to fix the source, allowing to study the interaction of other pairs. However, the limits of validity of this method were never quantitatively studied. In particular, the decays of short-lived resonances are expected to influence the emission source differently based on the particle species involved. In this work a new model was developed to handle this effect, making possible to perform non-traditional femtoscopy with much higher precision. This new analysis techniques and method developed were used by the ALICE col- laboration to study a multitude of different baryon–baryon systems, including p–Λ, p–Σ^0 , p–Ξ − , Λ–Λ, p–Ω^− and has even been applied to the meson sector to study the p–K^− interaction. Aside the development of CATS and the new source model, the author was the main analyzer of the p–Λ and Λ–Λ systems, therefore these results will be discussed in detail. In particular, the study of p–Λ has an important link to the equation of state of nuclear matter and the existence of massive neutron stars. In this work the chiral effective field theory computations are verified against the p–Λ data collected by the ALICE collaboration. The Λ–Λ system is of great theo- retical interest, as some models predict the existence of a bound state, the so called H-dibaryon, which could be composed of two Λs. The current work provides fur- ther experimental constraints on the Λ–Λ scattering parameters and binding energy of the hypothetical bound state

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Freizeitverkehr der Studenten aus Sofia und Wien

    In Bulgarien wurde bisher keine umfassende Untersuchung der Freizeitmobilität der Studenten durchgeführt um ihre Bedeutung für das Verkehrssystem zu erklären. Ziel dieser Diplomarbeit ist eine Analyse des Mobilitätsverhaltens von den Studenten in Sofia. Zu diesem Zweck bietet die folgende Bearbeitung einen Vergleich und Analyse des Freizeitverkehrs von den Studenten in Sofia und Wien. Der Vergleich wurde auf Basis einer von mir durchgeführte Befragung unter den Studenten aus Sofia und eine Befragung unter den Studenten der TU Wien erstellt. Das Ziel des Vergleiches ist, die Probleme, die bei dem Verkehr von den Studenten in ihrer Freizeit und auf dem Weg nach der Uni auftreten, zu bestimmen. Das beschriebene Mobilitätsverhalten ermöglicht es Lösungen vorzuschlagen. Ein Hauptpunkt dieser Arbeit ist auch bestimmte problematische Stellen in der Nähe von den Universitäten in Sofia zu beschreiben und für diese Stellen, Empfehlungen für die Planung und wenn nötig für den Umbau zu erstellen. Die Ergebnisse aus der Befragung zeigen, dass der Anteil der PKW-Benutzer in Sofia größer als den Anteil in Wien ist. Im Gegensatz ist der Anteil der Fahrrad Benutzer in Wien um 11% mehr (4% zu 15%) als die Benutzer in Sofia (nach der Umfrage). Das bedeutet, dass der Radverkehr in Wien attraktiver als in Sofia ist. Die Studenten benutzen den motorisierten Personalverkehr, weil sie keine gute Alternative haben. Deswegen wünschen sich 9,5% der Befragten aus Sofia Rad zu fahren, dagegen können nur 4,1% tatsächlich Rad fahren. Der Hauptgrund dafür ist nach der Meinung der Befragten das schlechte und fast nicht bestehende Radwegnetz in Sofia. Der Netz an öffentlichen Radwegen, Radfahrstreifen und Radrouten im Stadtgebiet Wien beträgt etwas mehr als 1170 Kilometer und der Radwegnetz in Sofia kaum 28 km. Nach der Meinung der Studenten sind die auf den Gehsteigen geparkten Autos, die die Bewegung der Behinderte und Mütter mit Kinderwagen behindern, problematisch. Die alten Fahrzeuge des ÖVs in Sofia wurden auch von den Studenten bemängelt. In der Nähe der Universitäten ist die Anzahl der Radabstellanlagen niedrig. Grund dafür ist das schlechte Radnetz um die Universität. Die Gehsteige sind beschädigt und haben Pfützen, meistens wegen der Last der geparkten Autos. Die Empfehlungen, wie die Situation um die Unis in Sofia verbessert werden könnte, schließen infrastrukturellen, Maßnahmen zur Änderung des Modal - Splits oder die Verkehrssicherheit betreffende Gründe ein. Das Ziel ist Vorteile der umweltfreundlichen Alternativen des motorisierten Individualverkehr zu fördern. Beseitigung der Autos und Instandsetzung der Gehsteige sind einige der in dieser Diplomarbeit vorgeschlagene Maßnahmen zur Steigung der Attraktivität des zu Fuß Gehens gegenüber den mobilisierten Individualverkehr. Mehr Radwege und bessere ÖV-Verbindungen können mehr Studenten zur Nutzung der Verkehrsmittel des Umweltverbundes bringen. Bessere Gestaltung der Aufenthaltsflächen und mehr Information für den umweltfreundlichen Verkehr gehören auch zu den Maßnahmen.So far, no study of leisure mobility of students in Bulgaria was performed to explain its significance for the transport system. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the mobility behavior of the students in Sofia. For this purpose, the following processing provides a comparison and analysis of leisure behavior of the students in Sofia and Vienna. The comparison was made on the basis of a survey, I conducted among students from Sofia and a survey among the students of the University of Vienna. The goal of the comparison is to determine the problems that occur with the movement of the students in their spare time and on the way to the university. The described mobility behavior makes it possible to propose solutions. A main point of this paper is to describe certain problem areas in the vicinity of the universities in Sofia and to recommend measures for planning and if necessary for the reconstruction. The results of the survey show that the proportion of car users in Sofia is greater than the proportion in Vienna. In contrast are the bicycle users in Vienna 11% more (4% to 15%) than the user in Sofia according to the survey. This means that the bicycle in Vienna is more attractive as a mean of transportation than in Sofia. The students use motorized private transport, because they have no alternative. That's why 9,52% of the respondents from Sofia wish to ride a bike, however only 4,15% actually ride a bike. The main reason for this is, in the opinion of respondents, the bad and almost non-existing bicycle network in Sofia. The network of public bike paths, bike lanes and bike routes in the city of Vienna is just over 1170 kilometers and in Sofia hardly 28 km. In the opinion of the students are the cars, parked on the sidewalks, that hinder the movement of disabled and mother with baby carriage, problematic. The old vehicles of the public transport in Sofia are also criticized by the students. Near the universities, the number of bicycle parking spaces is low. The reason is the poor cycle network around the universities. The sidewalks are damaged and have puddles mostly due to the load of parked cars. The recommendations that can improve the situation by the universities in Sofia are Infrastructural, measures to change the modal split or road safety relevant reasons. The goal is to make known the benefits of the eco-friendly alternatives of motorized private transport.Elimination of cars and repair of sidewalks are some of the proposed measures in this thesis to increase the attractiveness of walking to the cost of motorized private transport. More bike paths and better public transport connections can encourage more students to use the eco-friendly transport. Better design of recreational areas and more information for the environmentally friendly transport are also among the measures, recommended in this thesis

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
