Missionary Linguistics is an extremely interesting and profitable field of research, which gives
prestige to the linguistic production of missionaries. In the last decades, the interdisciplinary
nature of the human science s has led academics to dedicate themselves to transversal themes,
through different methodologies and perspectives of analysis: Missionary Linguistics is based on
that. My proposal fits with this multidisciplinary perspective and results from a synergy bet ween
the study of Missionary Linguistics and modern linguistic theories about foreign languages
acquisition and production. The objective is to detect the effects of linguistic transfer between
Romance languages in a grammatical text, made by a religious. The corpus of this research will be
the manuscript Gramatica linguæ malavaricæ. Samscredam , a Malayalam grammar with
Portuguese metalanguage, written in the 18th century by Joseph Kariattil, an indigenous religious.
The text presents a given number of erro rs in Portuguese, most of them due to the interference of
Italian, a language learned by the author during his studies at the Urban College of Propaganda
Fide in Rome. To conclude, my study aims to highlight which grammatical areas of Kariat til’ s
Portugues e have been most subject to the phenomenon of transfer, thus forming a first research on
linguistic transference applied to a documentation that is alien to modern studies on the foreign
languages acquisition and production. Moreover, as a tool for the phi lological linguistic
The present study is part of the wide-ranging interdisciplinary linguistic research committed to investigating the cognitive and metacognitive strategies involved in text comprehension processes, both written and oral, by foreign language learners. This article analyses some reading comprehension activities proposed by PFL (Portuguese as a foreign language) teaching coursebooks, and specifically their promotion of inferential processes, and the way in which they can foster higher quality reading skills. The aim of the research is, therefore, the unveiling of the cognitive processes involved in the interaction between learner and the text. To this end, psycholinguistic notions of reading and its teaching are adopted. Six PFL teaching coursebooks (competence level C1) are examined from this theoretical perspective, and textual interpretation activities are discussed qualitatively. The reference research model is that proposed by Applegate et al. (2002), which suggests a change of perspective in the elaboration of reading proposals and sets new goals that would lead readers to a profound reflection on what they are reading and on the use of the information in the text to reach their interpretation
The aim of this study is to analyse the sociocultural representations of indigenous people contained in the PLH1 teaching manual Brasileirinho: português para crianças e pré-adolescentes by Claudenir Gonçalves (2017). The work falls within the framework of language didactics studies, particularly of Brazilian Portuguese as a Heritage Language, and those related to social representations. The analysis aims to consider the different approaches adopted by the author to the transmission of the indigenous figure and his culture and, at the same time, highlights any existence of prejudices and stereotypes
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
The aim of the project is to contribute to the study of Linguistic historiography, specifically, Lusophone Missionary Linguistics. The study highlights an 18th century manuscript, a grammatical document of missionary production that has always remained at the margins of disciplinary debate. Through a philological-linguistic analysis of the corpus and a biographical reconstruction of the author, I aim to contribute to historiographical research of a linguistic and Lusophone grammaticography nature. The work, a Malayalam language grammar with Portuguese metalanguage, entitled Gramatica Linguæ Malavaricæ. Samscredam, by the Indian cleric Joseph Kariattil, is a peculiar text because it allows us to question the concepts and delimitations that lie at the basis of missionary linguistics, bringing an innovative perspective and a different approach to the discipline. The second objective of the investigation is to demonstrate how the Portuguese language played a central role in the international communication of the 18th century, obtaining the status of lingua franca, vehicular and cultural, as well as being used as a descriptive metalanguage for the interpretation of the so-called "exotic" languages, alongside Latin
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
