    No full text

By comparing three testimonies from Demochares with texts from the indirect tradition of Theopompus, the author highlights elements of continuity in historiographical discourse between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. Both Demochares and Theopompus employed emphatic language and often adopted a critical stance in evaluating the conduct and character of historical figures. The polemical tone evident in fragments from both authors suggests a shared methodology across several generations of political historians

Introduction: The management of both hip and distal femur fractures as well as periprosthetic fractures can be challenging for orthopaedic surgeons. The use of megaprosthetic implants could provide substantial advantages in elderly population affected by complex fractures. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of megaprosthetic implants for treating hip and distal femur fractures as well as periprosthetic fractures in elderly. Material and Methods: From January 1st 2015 to December 31st 2019, patients treated for proximal or distal femoral fractures with severe bone loss or failure of previous surgery were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were divided into two group based on diagnosis: proximal femur fractures (group A) and distal femur fractures (group B). Subsequently, patients underwent hip (group A) or knee (group B) megaprosthesis. Self-assessed questionnaires were administered to all patients pre and postoperatively. Primary outcome was the Activity Daily Living. Secondary outcomes were: Instrumental Activity Daily Living, Short Form-12, Oxford knee or hip score, complications. Charlson score, Harris classification for hip or Anderson Orthopaedic Research Institute score and complication were recorded. All patients underwent a radiological follow up to rule out implant loosening and mobilization. Pre and postoperative functional score comparisons in each group were undertaken. Significance was set p ≤ 0.05. Results: Twelve patients were finally included in the study. There were 6 male and 6 females, the mean age was 72,9 years old (± 7,4); the mean BMI was 29,8 points (± 4.5). The mean follow-up was 2.9 years (± 1.4). No differences could be found between pre and postoperative evaluation in each group. No aseptic loosening, dislocation, mobilization or radiolucency were recorded during the follow-up. In group A, two surgical site infections (2/6 patients) and one pneumonia (1/6 patients) were recorded. In group B, two surgical site infections occurred (2/6 patients). All patients were treated by antimicrobial oral therapy with complete regression. Conclusion: The use of hip and knee megaprosthetic implants in traumatology is a safe and viable option in elderly patients

Questionnaire-based study on speech changes and delays in children using protective masks: A public health issue that cannot be ignored

Introduction: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the prolonged use of face masks became necessary for infection control. However, this widespread practice may have unintentionally impacted communication, particularly in children at critical stages of speech and language development. Objective: This study aims to examine parental perceptions regarding the effect of prolonged face-mask use on speech and language development in children aged 2–8 years during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a 14-item online questionnaire completed voluntarily by parents or legal guardians. The survey explored perceived speech and language changes, recovery following discontinuation of mask use, and whether professional intervention (e.g., speech therapy) was sought. Results: A total of 60 participants were recruited. Language delays were more frequently reported in children under 3 years of age (38%) than in older children (22%). Following the end of mask use, 43.1% of parents reported no change in language development, 29.3% perceived no association, and 27.6% observed improvement. Among those who noticed delays, 30.8% consulted a speech therapist, 61.5% reported spontaneous recovery, and 7.7% reported no recovery. Overall, 77.3% of children showed significant language recovery after stopping mask use, 13.6% recovered partially, and 9.1% did not recover. Conclusion: Parental perceptions suggest that prolonged mask use may have interfered with language development in some children, especially the youngest. While many children improved spontaneously, a notable proportion required professional intervention. These findings highlight the importance of early detection and support for children potentially affected by communication while wearing masks during critical developmental periods. Further research using clinician-assessed measures is needed to validate these perceptions

Fiber Bragg Grating sensors to measure the coefficient of thermal expansion of polymers at cryogenic temperatures

One of the fundamental advantages in the employment of the Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors lies in their capability to allow measurements in extreme environmental conditions with also very high immunity toward external electromagnetic interference factors. The behavior of a polymer-coated FBG sensor, tested in cryogenic conditions at the laboratories of the European Organization for the Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, has been analyzed and will be discussed in this paper. Magnets used in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for the High Energy Physics Researches at CERN need in fact extreme cooling conditions to preserve the internal superconductivity highly crucial for their performances. The magnets, built with NbTi based superconductors, are cooled with liquid helium and they operate at 1.9 K. The aim of the present work is to estimate the thermal expansion coefficient of two polymers based on epoxy and methacrylate (PMMA) used as coating of FBGs, in the temperature range from 4 K to 300 K and to check their suitability for the use in temperature monitoring of the superconducting magnets. A standard numerical derivative method has been employed to estimate thermal expansion coefficients; moreover the correlated fluctuation analysis (CFA) based procedure is proposed, as a reliable alternative, to overcome numerical derivative drawbacks at very low temperatures within the range of 4-20 K. The calculated values of thermal expansion coefficient for both systems are in agreement with literature data on similar material
