Albin F. Irzyk Oral History Interview
No full textAlbin F. Irzyk was the commander of the 8th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division, which liberated Ohrdruf on April 4, 1945. In this interview, he gives the highlights of the division\u27s arrival in Europe, experiences during the Battle of the Bulge, and progression through the Rhineland. En route to Dresden, Irzyk received orders to go to Ohrdruf and look for an underground complex which was thought to hold communications equipment. His division bivouacked outside the town for the night and started to hear reports of bodies. The next morning, Irzyk went into the camp to look around, finding over 300 corpses. He describes his reactions to the camp and how it affected him as a commanding officer. Irzyk retired from the army as a brigadier general and is the author of three books about the U.S. military

Yet, the misguided and outdated formulations on murder and manslaughter introduced in the German Penal Code in 1941 still remain in force. The author, in the spirit of Albin Eser’s writings, presents a reform proposal based on a graduated model of aggravated, „normal“, and mitigated instances of intentional homicide. Herra Albin : Puvustuksen suunnittelu 3D-lyhytelokuvaan
No full textOpinnäytetyöni aiheena oli suunnitella ja toteuttaa puvustus Herra Albin lyhytelokuvaan. Elokuva oli Pohjois-Karjalan ammattikorkeakoulun tuotantoa, ja sain toimeksiannon pukusuunnitteluun kuvaa-ja/stereografi Sari Hotokalta. Hän kuvasi lyhytelokuvan opinnäytetyönään Pohjois-Karjalan ammatti-korkeakoululle ja elokuva kuvattiin 3D-tekniikalla. Ensi-iltansa elokuva saa keväällä 2012.
Opinnäytetyöni tavoitteena oli luoda onnistunut pukukokonaisuus, joka tukee kauhuelokuvan tarinaa ja haettua tunnelmaa sekä toimii saumattomasti roolihahmojen persoonallisuuden jatkumona. Raportissani kuvasin pukusuunnitteluprosessiani, jonka tukena käytin J. Michael Gilletten (2000) kehittämää seitsen-portaista suunnitteluprosessimallia. Suunnitteluprosessin lisäksi käsittelin työssäni elokuvapuvustuksen asettamia vaatimuksia värien sekä materiaalien osalta. Koin tarpeelliseksi myös tehdä suunnitteluni tueksi ja tiedon syventämiseksi elokuva-analyysit kolmesta eri kauhuelokuvasta. Analyyseihin sovelsin formaalista kuva-analyysiä. Lisäksi raportoin käyttämistäni patinointi- sekä kankaanvärjäystekniikoista, joita paljon teatteri- ja elokuvapuvustuksessa käytetään.
Puvustuksesta tuli mielestäni elokuvan tunnelmaa riittävästi tukeva kokonaisuus, jonka pohjalta osaan tulevissa suunnitteluprojekteissa ottaa tarvittavat asiat huomioon. Myös ohjaajilta saamani palaute oli hyvää ja puvustus tukee heidän mielestään elokuvan henkilöhahmojen tyylejä. Koen opinnäytetyöstäni olevan hyötyä myös muille elokuvapuvustusta ensi kertaa tekeville. Työssäni käsittelemäni aihealueet (värit, materiaalit sekä patinointi elokuvapuvustuksessa) sopisivat lisäksi yksityiskohtaisemman jatko-tutkimuksen kohteiksi.
Opinnäytetyöni suunnitteluprosessi oli silmiä avaava kokemus ja antoi minulle kattavan perustiedon elokuvapuvustuksessa vaadituista ominaisuuksista niin vaatteiden kuin suunnittelijankin osalta.The subject of my thesis was to design costumes for a short film named Mr Albin. The film was a produc-tion of the North Karelia University of Applied Sciences. I was commissioned to the project by Sari Hotokka who was the camera operator of the film which became her thesis for the university. Mr Albin was filmed in 3D-format and the premiere is in spring 2012.
The aim of my thesis was to create complete costuming to support the story and the intended atmosphere of a horror movie as well as to represent the personalities of the characters. In my report I described my costume design process which was based on J. Michael Gillette's (2000) seven-step theater design and problem solving model. In addition to the design process I studied the requirements that movie costume design has as for the aspects of color and material. It was also necessary to deepen my knowledge by analyzing three different horror movies with adapted formal picture analysis. I also reported on the cos-tume aging and distressing techniques that were used in the project. These techniques are also generally used in the field of costume design.
I feel that the costumes succeeded in supporting the atmosphere of the movie and the process gave me useful knowledge for my future design processes. Also the feedback from the directors was good and they thought that costumes supported the style of the characters. In my opinion, my thesis provides useful information to anyone who is making movie costumes for the first time. The subjects that were discussed in my thesis (colors, materials and distressing in movie costuming) offer prospects for further and more detailed research.
The design process of my thesis was an eye opening experience and it gave me a thorough insight into the qualities required of the clothes as well as the designers
Refined intersection homology on non-Witt spaces
No full textWe investigate a generalization to non-Witt stratified spaces of the intersection homology theory of Goresky–MacPherson. The second-named author has described the self-dual sheaves compatible with intersection homology, and the other authors have described a generalization of Cheeger's L2 de Rham cohomology. In this paper we first extend both of these cohomology theories by describing all sheaf complexes in the derived category of constructible sheaves that are compatible with middle perversity intersection cohomology, though not necessarily self-dual. Our main result is that this refined intersection cohomology theory coincides with the analytic de Rham theory on Thom–Mather stratified spaces. The word "refined" is motivated by the fact that the definition of this cohomology theory depends on the choice of an additional structure (mezzo-perversity) which is automatically zero in the case of a Witt space
